Unfortunately, this thing is terrible.

I've been waiting for the US release of the 360 Eye since it was revealed in, what, 2014? Aside from generally liking Dyson products, I also hate my Roomba and was excited about the prospect of Dyson stepping in and doing this category the right way.
Unfortunately, the only thing it has been able to do successfully is make me appreciate my Roomba 880.
Build quality is fantastic and the vacuum itself is best-in-class. Unfortunately, this is all rendered useless by the terrible software.
* Initial setup of the wireless network failed multiple times, the unit just hangs.
* Software updates failed via the app, I had to download the most recent firmware from the Dyson website and install it via USB.
* The vacuum does not respond quickly to commands sent via the app
* There is no way to guide the robot from the app
* It gets stuck on everything. EVERYTHING.
I have a Noguchi Cyclone table, and if I hadn't just dropped a grand on this thing, I'd be amused at how sad the lil robot looks trying to figure out how to get itself off of the shallow base.
It's also fun watching it attempt to navigate from underneath a normal, boring chair. Most recently, it took over 5 minutes- which is a bummer given the relatively short battery life.
* The battery just dies. The lil feller doesn't even have time to get back to its charging base.
* It apparently takes around 3 hours to charge with a 45 minute run time, and having done that multiple times in the 24 hours that I’ve owned it, it has yet to successfully clean a single 400 square foot room.
Kills me to say it, but do not buy this thing- yet. It hasn’t been officially available in the US for very long (early August, I believe), so the next update will be the first chance to apply whatever they’ve learned about US homes to their algorithms. Hopefully that gets released before my return window is up, because as it stands, this machine is definitely going back.

No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

The Future Has Arrived
By BBright
Dyson's 360 Eye robot vacuum takes one thing off your chore list. This intelligent vacuum thoroughly picks up everything from dust to dog hair, all while you're at work or doing something much better than housework. Its efficiency makes up for its slow pace. Amazing to see this smart product available in my lifetime.

The 360 Eye has been available internationally for over a year now, and available in the US from Dyson for about a month.

Dan, with all due respect, while I appreciate your input, I spoke with the 360 Eye team today and they confirmed what I'd already been told and read elsewhere. The hardware is working as designed- the software just isn't there yet and my experiences are not unique.
Just today, during a single cleaning attempt, the unit has already had 4 faults, including a random airways fault. And then it shut off in the middle of the floor because it was out of power, despite it later reporting it had nearly a full charge.
This is a half-baked product, and as it stands, nobody should buy it. Hopefully this changes in the near future.

Does it only vacuum (carpet)? What can it do with hardwood?

It is equally effective on hardwood, so far.

How quickly does it clean in terms of sq/ft per minute/hour?

The only real answer to this is "slow"

Beyond that, I don't think anybody can give you a precise answer as it depends entirely on the layout of your home and what obstacles it might encounter.
