To commemorate the 20th anniversary of its release, National Lampoon's Vacation has been fitted out with plenty of bells and whistles for its re-release on DVD. The movie has been given a letterboxed transfer at its original widescreen aspect ratio of 1.85:1, which has been enhanced for anamorphic playback on 16 x 9 monitors. The original English-language soundtrack has been mastered in Dolby Digital Mono, as are alternate audio tracks in French, Portuguese, and Spanish; the disc also includes optional subtitles in English, French, Spanish, and Portuguese. Bonus material includes an introduction from cast members Chevy Chase and Randy Quaid, a "Family Truckster and Roof Rack" featurette, the original theatrical trailer, and a commentary track in which the "Griswold Family" discussing their onscreen adventures with director Harold Ramis.

Great classic comedy. Still funny.

It's still a very funny movie, even with all the dated references. The extras aren't the greatest in the world: commentary, an introduction and a featurette gallery. But I only really wanted the movie and the price was fantastic at the time, so those things weren't all that important to me.
The picture quality is quite good. As I bought a DVD and watched it on a Blu-ray player on a 1080p TV, it definitely beats the image quality the first time I saw it on television back in 1984.
On a less important note, my copy did not have the same cover art as what is shown (Boris Vallejo painting). Mine is a fairly crude composite shot of Chevy Chase, the family truckster flying overhead and the desert in the background.

A touching, slightly raunchy remake

It became pretty obvious, when this film was released, that it was a sort of reboot/remake of the 1987 "Adventures in Babysitting," starring Elizabeth Shue. The basic concept is the same, but the characters are all quite different. Furthermore, Jonah Hill is about as far removed from Shue as you can get. But it's funny, cute and has its touching moments. However, due to some of its somewhat racier content (it IS Jonah Hill, after all) I would not recommend it for family viewing.

In all honesty, my wife wanted this movie. I saw it once and that was enough for me. An interesting storyline, but it would have been better with no Ben Aflac in it. But then again, ANY movie would be better without Ben Aflac. But my wife liked it.

Intriguing but disappointing.

I'll be honest. I got this because of its link to the 'Alien' series and it was only four bucks. I originally saw it in the theater and, like everyone else in that packed theater, I was disappointed well before the end. As a standalone sci-fi thriller, it's a decent film, but as an origin tale, it lacked...well, an origin. Worth a viewing or two, especially if it doesn't cost you much. But it could have, should have been so much more.

Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone), a Philadelphia boxer, is but one step removed from total bum-hood. A once promising pugilist, Rocky is now taking nickel-and-dime bouts and running strongarm errands for local loan sharks to survive. Even his supportive trainer Mickey (Burgess Meredith) has given up on Rocky. All this changes thanks to Muhammad Ali-like super-boxer Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers). With the bicentennial celebration coming up, Creed must find a "Cinderella" opponent for the big July 4th bout -- some unknown whom Creed can "glorify" for a few minutes before knocking him cold. Rocky Balboa was not the only "Cinderella" involved here: Writer/director Sylvester Stallone, himself a virtual unknown, managed to sell his Rocky script (one of many that he'd written over the years) on the proviso that he be given the starring role. Since the film was to be made on a shoestring and marketed on a low-level basis, the risk factor to United Artists was small. For Stallone, this was a make-or-break opportunity -- just like Rocky's million-to-one shot with Apollo Creed. Costing under a million dollars, Rocky managed to register with audiences everywhere, earning back 60 times its cost. The film won several Academy Awards, including Best Picture.

Slow but heart-warming. A classic.

There's a reason this won Best Picture at the time. Stallone plays a wonderfully loveable, somewhat slow-witted boxer who inspires all of Philadelphia. Although the pacing is slow and rather plodding by today's standards, the story still holds up as one about love and the benefit of good, old-fashioned hard work. If you can get your kids to sit still long enough, it's not bad for family viewing.

Classic cartoons, beautiful animation
on January 8, 2015

A lot of the animation in this is rotoscoped (drawing over live action film for added realism, frame-by-frame), similar to some of the work done in Disney's "Snow White." But the cels are far more colorful and detailed than pretty much any cartoon made in this century. The stories, for the most part, are pretty predictable, unfortunately. And Lois Lane is frustrating. But this series is a nice slice of yesteryear. 2 1/2 hours in 17 episodes.

Donnie (Jake Gyllenhaal) is a bright and charming high-school student who also has a dark and willfully eccentric side; he does little to mask his contempt for many of his peers and enjoys challenging the authority of the adults around him. Donnie is also visited on occasion by Frank, a monstrous six-foot rabbit that only Donnie can see who often urges him to perform dangerous and destructive pranks. Late one night, Frank leads Donnie out of his home to inform him that the world will come to an end in less than a month; moments later, the engine of a jet aircraft comes crashing through the ceiling of Donnie's room, making him think there might be something to Frank's prophesies after all. The rest of Donnie's world is only marginally less bizarre, as he finds himself dealing with his confused parents (Mary McDonnell and Holmes Osborne), his college-age sister (Maggie Gyllenhaal), his perplexed analyst (Katherine Ross), a rebellious English teacher (Drew Barrymore), a sleazy self-help expert (Patrick Swayze), and the new girl at school who is attracted by Donnie's quirks (Jena Malone). Donnie Darko was the first feature film from writer and director Richard Kelly; Drew Barrymore, who plays teacher Karen Pomeroy, also lent her support to the project as executive producer. A director's cut played in select theaters on a limited basis in the summer of 2004, featuring original music cues and trimmed scenes originally in Kelly's first cut of the film.

Dark, disturbing, delightful.

A cult classic. Jake and Maggie Gyllenhaal play brother and sister, so there's that bit of delightful realism to the story in an otherwise otherworldly tale. With a wonderfully dark and horribly sad soundtrack, including a Gary Jules cover of Tears for Fears' "Mad World," Donnie Darko can be a heart-rending story complete with tragedy, humor, science fiction and suspense.

Too long and lacking the feel of the originals

When Mark Wahlberg was announced as the lead of Transformers 4, I was relieved. Unfortunately, he is joined by an otherwise weak ensemble of characters. The film itself is also about 20 minutes too long and has a tendency to plod on. I can't help but think that if there had been one--just one character from the original films in this movie to tie them together (not including the Transformers themselves, of course) it would have felt more like the first few films. The writers of the first films were missing on this one and it shows. The original team of Kurtzman and Orci need to come back and Michael Bay needs to step back and hand the reins over to a different director for the next one.

Megan Fox. Say what you will about her as an actress, but she brought something to the first two films in the series that is noticeably lacking in the third film. Her replacement is utterly useless and pointless to the story and plot. The action sequences in the film, especially the infiltration of Chicago, are really quite good, however. And, as some of the movie was filmed in my hometown of Milwaukee, I have a somewhat biased feeling for it. It's not as good as the two films that preceded it, but it still has the same overall feeling of the first two that is sadly lacking in the fourth installment.

Hoping for a sequel

I saw this film in the theater and watched the original TV series in the 1980's. I was a fan of the show and was a little disappointed in Bradley Cooper as a casting choice for Face. However, I enjoyed the movie better the second time. I've warmed up to Cooper. Thankfully the film has what made the original series good: the intricate planning, the humor and, of course, the action. Some of the CGI is a little obvious, but it can be looked over.
