Great for Amateur Radio Use
on June 16, 2017
Posted by: DMATx
from Dallas, TX
I purchased these as "open-box" from Best Buy's eBay storefront, as the local BB didn't have the OB units in stock. My intent for these speakers is a little different than most folks', I imagine - I wanted to use these as external add-on speakers for my two amateur radio transceivers, since the built-in speakers on both units leave much to be desired. I didn't want to spend a lot, and while I had tried CB radio speakers, they didn't quite have the tonal quality I was looking for.
I connected the Insignias with some spare speaker wire hooked up to 1/8" stereo plug-to-screw-terminal adapters (the + side of the wire goes to the L terminal, the - side of the wire goes to the ground terminal).
Lo and behold, they work great! It's much easier to discern voices over the air that I was having trouble with before; I was concerned that the tweeter might introduce too much background hiss, but these speakers sound great. As I only needed one speaker for each radio, the set of 2 was a great value, especially as an "open-box" buy - these are just like brand new.
Just to test them, I did hook them up to my Insignia mini shelf system, and while they didn't have the fullness of the system's original speakers, they sounded pretty good - nice crisp highs and warm mids, albeit with less bass response. I can only wonder how they would do after a break-in period.
I can't comment on how they would stand up to the outdoor environment, but they are pretty solidly constructed.
All in all, if you're looking for an all-around decent-sounding utility speaker, check these out!

Great Small Speakers
on May 20, 2016

When I bought these about a year ago, I was obliged to purchase them from another seller, as Best Buy was out of stock. I was upgrading my living room home theater speakers, and I selected this BIC DV52si set for my wall-mount surrounds, replacing some old Pioneers. Initially, I was going to use BIC's larger DV62si speakers, since I have a set as my fronts (with the matching center DV62CLS), however I was reluctant to wall-mount such heavy speakers; these DV52sis are smaller, much lighter, and have keyhole mounting options, so I decided to give them a shot. I am amazed at the sound quality of these little speakers!
To test them, I hooked them up to the receiver in my bedroom, in place of some old KLH speakers. Though they sounded a bit thin and underpowered out of the box, I left the radio on for about an hour & went out. When I returned, I was stunned at much fuller, richer, and louder these speakers sounded! I'm no audio expert, so I can only describe the sound as rather "creamy"; highs are crisp without sounding harsh or shrill, mids sound full, and lows are surprisingly, well, low, especially for the DV52si's size and plastic housing. I love the sound so much, I've ordered two more sets! Honestly, I wish I'd heard these before I bought the DV62sis for the living room; the Adatto DV52si produces a terrific sound at a very affordable price point.

Great Little Cooker

I read several reviews before deciding to purchase this product, and I'm glad I picked the Cuisinart. It seems well built, but it's not overly heavy. The instructions are clear, and the recipes are helpful; I tried the pot roast, and it turned out perfectly! Cleanup was easy thanks to the non-stick pot, though I'm a little worried about scratching the interior - plastic utensils only. It's easy to operate, and it takes about 10 minutes to build up to high pressure. I can't speak to its durability at this point, but judging by the reviews and Cuisinart's 3-year warranty, I'm quite hopeful. All in all, I'd say it's a good value.

Excellent, With Some Caveats
on May 6, 2016
Posted by: DMATx
from Dallas, TX
I can agree with many of the other contributors' reviews of this speaker, and I would summarize the SRS-X33 as "being excellent for what it is"; for me, this means it's an excellent speaker for travel, personal listening, and smaller environments.
During a recent trip, I realized that I really missed my bedside speaker at home, the superb Sony SRS-X55, that lulls me to sleep every night playing ambient, ethereal music; though the X55 is a portable speaker, it's a bit too bulky and heavy to tote around in a carry-on. I decided to purchase a "cheapie" speaker that would easily fit into my bag and that I wouldn't fret over if it were lost. I went to a Best Buy in the town I was visiting and purchased the Insignia NS-CSPBTHOL-BK, which I returned (sound was too tinny) for the larger Insignia NS-SPBTBRICK-C (somewhat better, but still tinny), which I kept until I returned home. I knew we had another trip lined up in the coming months, so I decided to look for something a little more substantial; I ended up ordering the SRS-X33 from BB.com, as it was on sale (not available in store, though).
The small Sony is of understated, conservative design and is well constructed; its small size somewhat belies its solid build. As many other reviewers have mentioned, the overall sound is excellent. On the whole, the X33 delivers crisp highs, robust mids, and good bass. Using the "Sound" function increases the stereo separation dramatically, resulting in an amazingly wide soundstage; instruments seem to come from areas well beyond the X33's small footprint.
I listen to a wide variety of music, and the X33 handles most genres quite well. Classical, vocal, ambient, chill, classic rock, etc. all sound terrific, with amazing detail and clarity that I never would have thought possible in a speaker less than half the size of the X55. Hip-hop, EDM, etc. may present some challenges for the speaker, however - see caveat #2 below.
Caveat #1: While I do find the X33's overall sound to be superb, I must point out that its quality does diminish at increased volume. Sound quality is rich and detailed up to approximately 50-60% of its maximum output; increased volume results in increasingly aggressive dynamic compression and a subsequent loss of both the high and low ends. In fairness, however, many small speakers suffer from this limitation as well.
Caveat #2: Some bass-heavy tracks, even at moderate volumes, may overtax the speaker's ability to reproduce those frequencies and introduce low-end distortion, but I found that this is remedied, for the most part, by the use of equalization. I personally use PowerAmp's music player on my mobile devices, and I created an EQ profile for the X33 that reduces bass emphasis and slightly trims back the treble as well, making for an overall "flatter", but still full, output from the speaker.
After a couple of weeks of listening to this speaker, I did start to have some doubts about whether I wanted to exchange it for something else, something "better"...and this is where I realized that in order to figure out what "better" was, I first needed to figure what I actually wanted. After visiting a local Best Buy store and listening to several potential replacements, I realized that in my quest, I had forgotten my main concern was portability - this was to be a travel speaker with better sound quality than the cheaper Insignias (and the like) I'd already tried. I already own the X55, which has awesome sound quality, but I didn't want to lug it around. None of the other speakers I auditioned in the BB store had sound quality even close to the X33; most sounded "boxy" and flat. A couple of others, including the newer Sony SRS-XB3, had much stronger bass output, but on both, the result was muddy mids and highs.
Though the SRS-X33 can produce a loud, quality sound, if you're in the market for a portable speaker that "thump-thumps" out tunes for a crowded party, a la boombox, I would say listen to one in a store first and perhaps keep looking. After my store visit, however, I ultimately realized that I already had what I wanted all along: a very portable speaker that reproduces excellent sound quality at personal to moderate listening levels - for me, the Sony SRS-X33 is a keeper.

For the Price, a Very Good Speaker
on April 7, 2016

I purchased this speaker while on vacation; I already own a terrific-sounding Sony SX55, but I didn't bring it, as it's rather heavy to be lugging around in my carry-on, and the power adapter is proprietary. At first, I bought the smaller Insignia NS-CSPBTHOL-BK, as it was on sale, but the sound quality was on the tinny side.
I exchanged it for this speaker, as it had just gone on sale for 50% off; the sound is quite a bit fuller, and its bass reproduction, while not stellar, is still more evident than the NS-CSPBTHOL-BK. I probably won't use the charging feature, as I have a dedicated backup battery for my portable devices, but it's nice to have (though you can't charge a device and listen at the same time). It doesn't have auto-shutoff like my much-more-expensive Sony, and the on/off tones are a little annoying, but it pairs with my devices (Samsung S4 and Tab S) with no problem. Another great travel feature is the charging port is the standard micro-SD (cable included, but not the charger), so replacing a lost charger is easy (as opposed to the Sony).
All in all, the NS-SPBTBRICK-C is a decent portable speaker for travel, and it's an especially great deal if caught on sale.

Yet Another Pioneer Great
on December 11, 2014
Posted by: DMATx
from Dallas, TX
I have owned Pioneer home (and car) audio for over 20 years, and I have rarely been disappointed. This unit replaced a Pioneer VSX-1015-TX (purchased from BB); the 1015 is still working very well, but it had no HDMI connections or HD audio capability. This new 1124 has the wonderful, warm Pioneer sound that I've come to know and love. Ease of setup is fair to good; using the microphone, it's possible to be up and running pretty quickly, though I have made some modifications to the MCACC's initial settings. Make no mistake, this receiver is *highly* customizable, and the learning curve is a bit on the steep side. Once it's dialed in, however, the sound is crystal clear, with a level of detail even the 1015 couldn't quite match. Rated at 90 watts/channel, it should be plenty powerful for the average home theater setting; we have tall ceilings and an open floorplan to our kitchen, and we have no problems with sound projection.
Many others have pointed out the multiple features of this receiver, but I have to say that I've always been a fan of learning remotes; competitors in this price range usually provide only a universal remote with programmable codes for other devices, but the 1124 can learn individual commands from other remotes. I just love that.
I haven't yet tried the Internet Radio function, but I have used Pandora quite a bit, and it works beautifully. I'm uncertain what Pandora's streaming quality is, but the "S.Retrv" feature "fills out" mp3 files so that they sound almost as good as lossless files - it really is amazing how good it sounds.
Blu-ray movies have to come to life since we moved to the 1124; the 1015 sounded "good", but the level of detail provided by the HD audio formats really took me by surprise. Watching the new "Godzilla" (DTS-HD Master), I was blown away - the sound was unbelievable - every guttural detail of the creature's roar was crystal clear! I didn't know what I was missing, since the older 1015 was downmixing everything to regular Dolby Digital and DTS.
The one hitch we've had is an intermittent issue with our Dish DVR (ViP612); every so often, the HDMI video passthrough to the TV would "choke", causing the video to flicker off and on (though the sound was fine). From what I researched, there can be issues with the HDCP handshake between the Dish DVR, the receiver (not just this one, but many), and the TV. I've since connected the Dish DVR directly to the TV, and run the audio from the DVR to the 1124 via an optical connection. I don't believe this is a fault with the receiver, but a problem with the Dish DVR.
The price as of today is a C-note less than I paid a couple of months ago, so if you're one the fence, I recommend giving this receiver a try. It's versatile, powerful, and highly customizable - it might take a little patience, but I've found that it's definitely worth it!

Overall, A Good Buy

My goal was to replace my older model Insignia shelf system NS-A2111 (with DVD player) in order to gain more connectivity options.
This little unit has terrific sound for its size and price point; even without using any of the EQ settings or tone controls, it has a nice, smooth, rather bassy sound that I really like. The connection options are just what I needed; the USB port recognized my thumb drive right away, and the Bluetooth capability worked fine with my Samsung Galaxy S4. Of course, those playing CDs will find that the CD player works very well, even with scratched discs - I tried one of my more scuffed up CD-Rs, and it played without a hiccup. The FM radio works well, once the included antenna is stretched out and away from the unit; it does lack AM, however. It has an AUX connection for playing sound from a TV or other device with a line-out.
There are a few downsides, though. The system exhibits a delay whenever a command is executed, either from the front panel or the remote. The mp3 navigation is lacking, whether playing from an mp3-laden CD or a thumb drive plugged into the USB port; as another reviewer mentioned, the unit seems to lack the capability to see folders - it only sees the total number of individual mp3s. It's possible to skip forward to a given track number, but it will be difficult to hit the folder and track you might be aiming for, and you'll probably have to keep skipping forward and backward to find the song you're seeking.
Overall, however, for the price (especially since I caught it on sale), I think this is a nice little shelf system. The built quality is pretty good, and the sound quality is surprisingly great for its size. More money would buy a better user interface and mp3 navigation features, but for those on a budget, the Insignia NS-SH513 is definitely worth a try.
What's great about it: Sound quality, connectivity options, price
What's not so great: User interface, mp3 navigation

Good Sound, Great Look

We still have our land line, but we use our cell phones for most calls (especially the long distance ones), so we were looking for an "all-in-solution". While researching the offering, I found that the choice seemed to come down to this series of phones (CLP99x83) and the new Panasonic line (KX-TGE27x). We are coming from a 6 year-old Panasonic 5.8 gigahertz cordless system, so I was rather leaning toward the Panasonic, but the new line just wasn't that attractive, though it is feature-rich. This AT&T set caught my eye, and its capabilities are impressive.
The 1.9 GHz frequency is supposed to minimize interference with other devices, such as microwave ovens and wireless routers, and the sound quality of the phones is very good. Calling our home from my cell, I was surprised at how clear and loud the conversation was - I asked if my partner was on one of our two corded AT&T phones, but lo and behold, he was on the new cordless. The old Panasonics lacked this clarity.
We both have Galaxy S4 cell phones, and they both paired efforlessly; we were able to download our contact lists, and though the contacts needed a little tweaking (labeling for "home", "cell" etc), it worked very well. Making calls from the CLP99483 using our cell lines worked very well, too - call quality is clear, though there is some degradation of sound quality, since you're essentially using the AT&T system as a big bluetooth headset; all in all, though, I found the call quality to be quite good. You do need to leave your cell within about 15-20 feet of the base unit, though, but you can answer your cell calls from any of the handsets.
After looking at several manuals for the various Panasonic and AT&T models, it appears that this series is one of the few where both BT connected phones can be on a call at the same time. Many of the phones available will allow 2 or 4 cell devices to be paired, but only one can be used at a time, so this set would appear to be more flexible than most.
A big plus for me is the styling of this AT&T system; it has a very modern-looking, attractive design that I like a lot. The competing Panasonic system has a ho-hum, stubby sort of look in white/silver that didn't appeal to me. The construction seems solid enough, though the handsets feel light. Another plus: separate buttons for the different lines: Home, Cell 1 and Cell 2 have their own light-up keys.
The cons: no beltclips on the handsets, no headphone jacks on the handsets; though you can pair a BT headset, you can only pair it to the base, not the handsets, so your range is limited. (The AT&T system will accept a AT&T-brand DECT 6.0 headset - TL7800 - with a 500' range, however, which I have just ordered.) The screens are readable when lit, but they're rather plain-jane, non-high resolution, and the backlight only stays on for 10 secs; when it's off, the dark LCD screen can be hard to read in lower light. There is no call block feature (which the Panasonic does have), but I ordered a CPR Call Blocker with a 1200-number capacity that seems to be doing the job well; the Panasonic system has a Call Block feature, but it only holds 250 numbers.
While the CLP99483 may not have as many bells and whistles as some of its competitors, namely the newest Panasonic, it accomplishes its basic tasks very well: call quality on both land and cell lines is very good. The styling and dual cell connectivity make it a flexible and convenient phone that bridges land line and cell capabilities in a very attractive package. My overall rating would actually be a 4.5 out of 5.

Great Bargain TV

I've been in the market for a small flat-panel TV for our spare bedroom to replace an aged Sony 27" CRT, and I had previously looked at this model in a Best Buy store. I missed the Black Friday deal on it, so I thought I'd wait for another sale - lo and behold, BB had it on sale for less than its price on Black Friday! I ordered one and picked it up in store. It is a very lightweight TV, and it was very easy to assemble; the built-in setup is a breeze, , and I had it up and running in no time. The 32" screen is the perfect size for the room, and it provides a great picture(no dead pixels, no blotches), even though it's currently only set up with SD satellite service. Hooked up to the Sony blu-ray player (also on sale, from Best Buy), the picture is fantastic (with very little tweaking at that), and the viewing angles are very good. The remote, though somewhat basic, is very responsive, with no need for repeated button presses. The sound is actually better than I thought it would be; It could stand to be hooked up to an external stereo system, but still, not bad at all for such a slim set. All in all, a terrific bargain on a very good TV; we have another Insignia TV, a 37", that's been a great performer for the last 18 months. We're hoping this one will be just as reliable.

A Versatile HD Performer
on July 20, 2012

I purchased the NS-HDRAD after getting hooked on a couple of the HD radio stations here in Dallas that do not have analog counterparts. I wanted something that I could use on the go, if desired, not just a tabletop unit; this little radio fills the bill nicely. It finds all the HD channels just fine with the telescoping antenna - I have not tried the provided plug-in antenna, but it's nice to know I have the option.
In fact, the antenna option brings me to another great aspect of this little radio - its versatility; along with the antenna feature, it has another handy set of input/output jacks - the headphone jack is great for private listening, and it doubles as a line-out to connect the NS-HDRAD to a home or car receiver, or even a set of powered speakers. Additionally, there's an AUX-in for connecting and listening to an mp3 player, CD player, phone, etc. Yet another facet of its versatility: it runs on batteries as well as the supplied AC adapter.
The sound quality is good overall, considering the unit's small size; while it's not going to be mistaken for a large boombox, the sound isn't terribly tinny - it has a nice fullness that rather surprised me. There are no sound shaping settings, like bass or treble, but I don't really miss them. And, again, it's possible to connect the NS-HDRAD to another device for more substantial sound.
It has a nice, sharp, clear LCD display that is easy to read. At night, I don't think it would be a nuisance, as the display is angled up rather than straight out the side, like a clock radio.
All in all, this unit is a terrific value, combining well thought-out features with a bargain price point. If you're interested in HD RADIO and don't want to spend a lot of money, the Insignia NS-HDRAD is definitely worth a look.
What's great about it: Versatile connectivity, low price, great reception
What's not so great: A bit lacking in bass response

Could not get this to work
By InTheWest from San Francisco, CA
Buyer Beware! This is the Mystery Headset. I bought this to pair with a brand new AT&T EL51200 Dect 6.0 Cordless Telephone. Be sure to look at the photo of this headset. You will see the base unit has NO "Pair" button. It has no button at all. However, when you refer to the User's manual, it tells you to push the "Pair" button on the base unit, in order to pair it with your cordless telephone. The User's manual that came with this headset was indeed for the TL600. However, the photo it shows in the manual bears no relevance to the actual unit. I was completely unable to pair this with my new phone, because I couldn't push a button that wasn't there. I took it back to Best Buy and explained this dilemma to the very nice Customer Service guy. He looked at the base unit, read the directions in the manual and said, "Huh. Well, THAT'S weird." He too realized there was no way to pair this with my AT&T cordless phone. I have now ordered the TL610, which HAS a "pair" button and which, according to the AT&T site, should work with my phone. So please keep these things in mind. This review might save you the same frustration I have experienced.

Actually, according to the TL7600 manual available on AT&T's website states that "To register a headset to a TL7610/TL7611/TL7612 DECT headset base" (another headset, not the phone), one should push the PAIR button.
"To register the headset to an AT&T DECT cordless telephone base...on the telephone base of the cordless phone, press and hold the HANDSET LOCATOR button until the IN USE light turns on (about four seconds) and release the button."

Then why is it a "great cooker"? As you mention you returned the "first one", did you get a second? If so, did it work?

How was the phone's call quality? How was its responsiveness? Does the stock software offer any useful tools, or is it largely bloatware? How well do the GPS, NFC and Bluetooth features function? There are so many questions you left unanswered in your review, yet you took the time to rate the phone 1 star because of your clumsiness; nowhere in the description does it say that the V10 is "shock-absorbent". Cell phones are inherently delicate devices, loaded with sophisticated electronics and glass screens - scratch-resistant glass, not bullet-proof.

Take high- or low-angle shots with the FUJIFILM X-T10 by moving the LCD monitor up or down. The electronic viewfinder shows the subject of your image clearly and incorporates the effects of your exposure settings. Shooting moving objects is a breeze with the real-time viewfinder and short shutter time lag of the FUJIFILM X-T10.

Without a list of reasons why you returned the camera, your review doesn't contribute anything toward shoppers' informed buying decisions.

Because...?

Your review serves no purpose without details as to why you felt this mirrorless camera "isn't for you". Image quality? Features lacking? Flash recycle time?
We'll never know.

I am looking for a system to connect a turntable. I need a Aux connection for 2 plugs. What kind of aux connection does the Insignia have?

It is dual RCA - left/right (white/red)

What antenna booster is compatible with Insignia 50W Bluetooth CD Compact Shelf System?

I bought a Terk Powered Antenna to help with the reception we're getting on our Insignia radio but it's not compatible with the radio (no where to connect it). Thanks for your help.
If your Terk has a standard coax (cable) connector on it, you'll need an adapter to fit the antenna input on this unit: http://www.amfmreception.com/fm-radio/fm-antenna-connector-guide

How would you use this with bluetooth wireless speakers? I tried per previous answer but the y didn't recognize eachother.

I don't believe that it would work as a "bluetooth out" (for lack of a better term" - it would serve as the "bluetooth in" for a cell phone, mp3 player, tablet , etc.

Does this unit have any sort of preamp out for recording or connecting to another device?

There is a headphone out jack on the back of the unit that might serve as an audio out, depending on your other device.

Does the "random" feature work when playing music from a USB memory stick via the USB port?

The manual is vague about the random play with a USB-connected source. It does mention in the CD section: "Random play is only available on standard music CDs, not MP3 or WMA CDs." It doesn't mention USB mp3 files.

Is it possible to have 4 speakers hooked up to this system at the same time?

I am looking for a Stereo system that can hold 4-6 speakers rather than just 2. However, I would like to keep the price down.
It's not designed for more than two speakers, but you *could* hack it (voiding the warranty, of course). You have to be careful to maintain the ohm load presented to the unit. Do a search for "speaker connection parallel vs series". If your load drops too low, the unit will overheat and possibly sustain damage.

Is the USB port a charging port?

The manual doesn't specifically state the USB port's charging capability, though I did hook up my Sansa Clip, and it started charging - that is a low-amp device, though. I don't think I'd risk hooking up a high-amp device like a tablet.

Can I connect a Sirius/XM radio to this and listen through the speakers?

Yes, if the Sirius/XM device has an AUX Out port; you could connect it to the AUX In on the Insignia.

Does the USB interface recognize "folders"?

No, unfortunately, it doesn't; all of the files are just in a big "blob", though they are in order, sort of.
