Return to inkjet after laser

I'd been using a Canon muti-function laser unit for quite a while. It started showing signs of age and finally needed to be replaced. When I had bought it, it made more sense to me to go with a black-and-white laser printer than a color inkjet. I did a lot of printing then and speed was important.
Now my needs have changed and I don't need to generate nearly as much paper, and I decided that it would be nice to get back to printing in color. The cost of a color laser unit didn't make sense, so I just focused on multi-function color inkjets.
After getting caught up on printer technology after a long time, I settled on this unit as a good balance between price and features. The old printer was connected directly to a computer, which shared it with the rest of the house. However, the reliability was dodgy and it got to be frustrating. So I decided to go with a wi-fi-enabled printer. That was a great choice.
I can now print from any computer in the house, and can even print from our phones. I haven't had any problems setting up the computers to use it and the printing and scanning are flawless. Compared with my old laser, the printing speed is much slower, but I only ever print a few pages at a time and speed really isn't a factor. I wasn't sure if I wanted to pay extra to get a unit with a document feeder, but I'm glad I did. It works great.
I haven't done enough printing yet to run through the cartridges that came with it, but as part of HP's ink-replacement program, I've received the replacements for when they dry up. I'll have to give the program some time to see how I feel about it. It's kind of cool that the printer "phones home" when the ink is getting low, resulting in a package in the mailbox a couple of days later. I pay a fixed price per month for a specified number of pages; if I go over that, I pay a few bucks more for additional pages. But, regardless of how much ink I go through, I never pay for ink. It's kind of interesting - if I print a document with a single character on it, that counts the same as if I printed a high-resolution photo. It may take a while to work out the appropriate number of pages, as I've never really paid much attention to that before.
For performance and reliability, I definitely recommend this unit as a good value - great features at a reasonable price.

Doesn't keep drinks warm as long as I'd hoped

My son wanted to start using our Keurig to make coffee to fill his thermos for work. He was frustrated by the fact that he needed to brew two cups individually to generate enough coffee. Since the Keurig came with the standard (non-thermal) carafe, I suggested trying that. I bought some carafe-sized pods and he gave it a try. He was pleased, but he didn't need all of the coffee brewed in the thermos.
So I decided to get this thermal carafe, with the idea that he could brew a carafe when he got up, and then I'd finish it off when I got up, about three hours later.
It works fairly well, but by the time I get around to pouring mine, it's cooled off somewhat. It's still warm and drinkable, but not hot. I sometimes stick it in the microwave for about 20 seconds to heat it up. In general, it's providing a solution for us without wasting coffee (and somewhat justifying the pricey carafe pods), but it would be nice if it kept the coffee hot just a bit longer.

Kindle is aging well

I was a fairly early adopter of Kindle, and regularly use the original model. You know - the one with the physical keyboard at the bottom. I've always been impressed by this device, which was designed to be very good at one thing, rather than a one-size-fits-all device. Don't get me wrong - I love my smart phone, and sometimes use it to read Kindle books in a pinch. But I can use my old, creaky Kindle for hours at a time in a variety of lighting conditions, and it provides a great reading experience.
I tried to get my wife excited by it, but it never really resonated with her. Then our son bought a newer model recently and he raved about it. For some reason she got excited about it and said that it would be a good present for her on some future occasion. Well, I had a Best Buy gift card and a reward voucher, so that seemed like a reasonable occasion. I surprised her with the newer model, and she was thrilled.
I've used it and it compares favorably with my old model. I do miss the physical keyboard on the newer model, but the touch-screen features more than make up for that. More importantly, the clarity and legibility of the screen are as good as the original. I've seen people using Kindle Fire and other tablets to read books. I'll still stick with the good old Kindle (or the good new one) for reading. It's hard to beat.

Really makes a difference in my daily life

Since I got a Cub Scout watch at eight years old, I've had a watch on my wrist constantly. Not only do I like to have the time a glance a way, I've always had a fascination with "gadgety" watches. I'm a late-comer for most gadgets, but with watches I've always wanted the latest toy. I was the first person I knew to have a digital watch, then the first to switch from LED two-handed watches to LCD. I've owned watches with built-in compasses, watches that synchronized with the atomic clock in Fort Collins, chronometers with too many dials to fit comfortably, and anything else that's come down the pike.
When smart watches became "a thing", however, I decided to hold out for the next generation. I knew that they would ultimately improve, and didn't want to jump on the first wave, only to be disappointed when everything else passed me by. I kept an eye on articles, reviews, etc. Interestingly, when it came down to comparisons, the humble Pebble - the one that first made smart watches a viable commodity - was constantly rated favorably in many categories against its newer and more expensive competitors. All the new stuff coming out was flashier, but didn't add any features I wanted; combine that with shorter battery life, and it's pretty much a no-sale for me.
Meanwhile, the Pebble kept coming down in price. When Best Buy had a sale, I couldn't resist. I had fun playing with this new toy, but after the newness of it faded, I found myself with an incredibly useful device that literally has made a small, but significant, change in my daily life.
I generally keep my phone in a holster on my belt. When it rings, the tone tells me what kind of notification it is (text, voice message, email, etc.) and sometimes who it's from, but nothing else to tell me whether it's important enough to pull the phone out and take a look. In the winter, when I'm driving and my phone is strapped beneath a heavy jacket, which in turn is strapped down by a seat belt, twisting and reaching to retrieve and view the phone is not only inconvenient, it's potentially dangerous. With my Pebble, I just take a quick look at my wrist and I can gauge the importance of the incoming notification. If it warrants further action, I can pull over and take appropriate action.
I recently went on a business trip. Most of the time I was in meetings or working sessions with my customer. In such a case, I feel that constantly checking my phone is a sign to the people paying by the hour for my time that I'm not focusing on their needs. However, when I get a little vibration on my wrist, a quick glance at my watch is hardly noticed, and doesn't distract from the conversation in progress, even if I'm the one speaking at the time. If a notification appears to be important (e.g.: the airline telling me that my flight has been delayed and that I'll miss my connection home, which did happen during this trip), it's easy to wait for an appropriate break in the action and deal with it accordingly.
And hey, the watch geek in me enjoyed it when we were at lunch and I could show off the geeky features.
At this point I can't imagine having a smart phone without a smart watch. If you're on the fence, just go out and get this little beauty. Maybe something better is around the corner, and maybe not, but you might as well start taking advantage of this useful (and incredibly cool) technology.

It does its job - what more can you ask?

I recently had a "mystery voucher" from Best Buy. It was worth somewhere between $5 and $5000, but you had to go into the store to see what it was worth. I expected it to be worth $5, and it was indeed worth $5. So I started wandering through the store, looking for something relatively cheap so I could feel good about my little windfall.
I saw a display with these little flash drives on sale for $6. You can never have too many flash drives, so I basically shelled out a buck for 16 GB. Not so long ago, that would have been worth about $40.
Anyway, I plugged it in, tested it, and it worked. That's all I need it to do. For a buck, I feel pretty good about the purchase.

Gets the hair - wife is happy

With two dogs and four cats in the house, pet hair is an issue. We had a portable vacuum years ago, but that had died after a reasonable life of heavy use. We've tried various replacements over the years, but none were up to the standard of the original. When it came time for a new one, I did some research and came up with this model.
When I got it home, my wife realized that it was a slightly updated version of what had worked well years before. As hoped, this delivered on its promises and the reputation of its predecessor. We have carpeted stairs, which the cats use as their hangout - access to the people, but a quick exit when the dogs are feeling a bit too playful. Those steps require a good cleaning every day or two. We're happy to see that this vacuum handles the stairs and other hairy places.
The cleaning power and battery life are great. From some of the comments people have made about the battery life, it sounds as though they're using it to clean an entire house. If you use the right tool for the job, you're going to be happier. This is the right tool for the intended job, and we're pleased with the results.

Good for price, but room for improvement

I bought this for my wife, who was used to an iPod Touch. For the most part, it gives her everything she had with the iPod, with the addition of a phone. After getting used to the differences between IOS and Android, she's reasonably pleased with it.
The main reason for buying this phone was the slide-out keyboard. However, after using it for a while, she would rather stick with the virtual keyboard and have an overall slimmer phone.
The call quality on her end is fine, but when she calls me, it sounds a bit muffled. It's still easy to discern what she's saying, so it's just a minor annoyance.
She downloaded a couple of bar code scanning apps, and was unable to read UPC codes. I did some research, and it turns out that this is a common problem with this model. Apparently there's no auto-focus (or maybe limited auto-focus) on the camera, which precludes using it to scan UPC codes. Other code types, such as QR, do work OK. I'm hoping that I'll find an app that works on UPC codes with this phone, or some other way to work around it. This isn't a show-stopper, but it is disappointing, since this is a feature she was looking forward to using.
All in all, this is a decent phone at a decent price with some nice features, as long as you're willing to put up with some small shortcomings.
