Nice Gaming Laptop with Lots of Features
on June 23, 2021
Posted by: Cupra
from Keller, TX
The ASUS - ROG (Republic of Gamers) Strix G15 Advantage Edition is a great looking piece of kit, from the moment you open the box. The laptop is 'presented' to you like some kind of trophy as you open the box. At 5.29lbs, this laptop does have some heft to it.
As for the machine itself, it took quite some time to get it set up, the usual Windows 10 configuration, which with all the flashing lights on the laptop, infuriated my son, as he wanted to get stuck in and personalize it for himself. After the initial set up, he had fun setting the Aura Creator up to get the laptop looking just how he wanted it. The RGB backlit keyboard with dedicated WASD key highlights is almost infinitely customizable, along with the C shaped light bar along the front edge and 1/3 of the sides.
The screen is nice and bright, colorful, it is NOT touchscreen, no matter how hard you press it. My son's desktop PC is touchscreen so this took a moment to adjust for him. Its a 1920x1080 (full HD screen) at a nice 15.6" diameter with a 300hz refresh rate and 3ms response time.
We tested this laptop out with two key games, Roblox for him and Call of Duty Warzone for me. I tend to prefer dedicated game consoles, my son prefers gaming PCs. With Roblox, everything ran as expected, until we got into some intense multiplayer action, when there appeared to be some interpolation on the screen, the graphics effectively 'scrolled' to refresh down the screen. Not the end of the world, but not what I was expecting from a dedicated gaming laptop. Similar situation with Call of Duty even during the opening video, the interpolation was there, causing an almost scrolling refresh of the graphics as the animation continued. Need to delve deeper into the settings to find the optimal set up for both types of games and demands on the machine.
The SSD is kind of small (at 512GB), especially when considering most game downloads these days exceed 100GB, so either an external storage solution, or upgrading the internal drive to a much larger one will be needed. I don't understand why companies who are designing for gamers, and know the typical download size of a game are making the drives so relatively small. Same is happening with consoles too. It has 16GB RAM on board, but that really needs to be upgraded as well, to increase performance.
I've read that several people have had issues with the Radeon 6800M GPU, either not switching, or even being DOA. I haven't found that to be an issue, yet, but having only had the laptop a week, only time will tell. So far so good, I haven't had a similar experience.
AMD Smartshift aims to increase performance by as much as 10% by using a hardware boosting interface that shifts power between the CPU and GPU, but in all honesty, I didn't notice any significant increase in performance during gameplay.
The sound is very impressive, I must say. The intro start up sound takes you aback and grabs your attention. The laptop has Dolby Atmos compatibility, with dedicated headphones (not included). The battery is a 4-cell Lithion-Ion Polymer and has 'decent' life to it, but don't expect to game all day on a single charge.
As mentioned, there are many other features of this laptop including a 'vapor chamber' that offers better and faster heat dissipation, an IR sensor that monitors the temperature of the keyboard, so that the cooling can adjust to keep the keyboard as cool as possible, it has two-way noise cancellation that helps filter out unwanted noise during voice communication, has a HDMI out to enable you to expand to a High Definition monitor or TV, a multitude of connectivity options including USB 3.2 Type C and 3 USB Type A 3.2 ports. The machine is also WiFi 6 certified with two data streams and two antennas for improved responsiveness. It also has swappable 'armor cap', (the red bar on the top left of the laptop) - there are two other caps, a silver and a graphite one buried under the packaging in the box.
Overall, I've been happy with the ASUS ROG STRIX G15 Advantage Laptop in the short time I've owned it. Could it be better? Sure. Is it a decent laptop? Absolutely, it provides a great platform to build on, with a lot of nice features, great aesthetics and a substantial overall feel.

Great 'All-in-One' Filmmaking Kit
on June 21, 2021
Posted by: Cupra
from Keller, TX
The Røde iOS Edition Vlogger Kit is a great addition to any iPhone users video arsenal. The kit includes everything you need to create high quality, professional looking videos::
1x VideoMic Me-L Microphone
1x Rubber Clip (pre installed on the microphone)
1x WS9 Windshield
1x Smartgrip
1x Tripod 2
1x MicroLED On-Camera Light
1x Clip-On Diffuser
8x Colored Filters
1x USB Charging Cable
The kit is compatible with iPhone/iPod touch 6th Generation up to the iPhone 12 range, with the lightning port.
Set up is incredibly easy, attach the iPhone clip to the tripod, charge and attach the LED light to the top of the iPhone mount, and plug in the microphone to the bottom of your iPhone and you are up and running. The LED light is bright, it has 4 light settings, long press the button on top to turn on and off, short press to switch between the light intensity settings. There is a light diffuser case and 8 different gels that you can use with it, meaning that the light can not only be used on top of the camera to light you/your subject, but you can also place colored gels on the LED light and use it as ambient lighting for a scene you are shooting. The light provides a nice full cast on the face, giving an even light without being to harsh, but I do wish it's angle could be adjustable. The 8 light gels come in their own little carry case so they remain clean and undamaged. The charge of the LED light lasts for approximately 1 hour before needing to be recharged again.
The VideoMic Me-L is a nice, compact, direct connect, directional microphone that has a great sound field pick-up, that is only enhanced by adding the WS9 Windshield. This eliminated almost all background noise and interference and provided crisp, clear, intentional sound, helping make videos feel a lot more professionally finished. I did have an issue accessing the on-screen video button with the windshield on, but this can be overcome by using the volume up button on the iPhone (12 Pro in my case) to start and stop your video. You do need to remove your case from your phone in order to use the microphone in the lightning port.
The iPhone clip is aluminum, with a spring actuator to keep it open as you place your phone in there, a nice touch, makes it easier to position the iPhone in the cradle. The handle of the tripod is heavy duty plastic/rubber and has a gimble on top to enable you to get the iPhone at just the right angle for your video. The handle has 3 legs on it to provide a stable base for the camera to rest on, and adjust as needed. There are not adjustable legs in themselves, they do not extent, retract or bend into other settings.
Overall, very happy with the Røde Vlogger Kit for iPhone, it's elevated my content, giving a much more professional look and feel to it. If I were to change anything about it, I would like for the mount on top of the iPhone holder to have a small gimble on it so that you can rotate the LED up or down, away from the subject slightly, it would be nice if the handle could extend a little to give a little more versatility, and if the windshield was a little more sculpted to allow better access to the on-screen recording button, but again, these are 'nice-to-have's' on an already great product.

Absolutely Stunning Performance, So Much Bass!
on June 15, 2021
Posted by: Cupra
from Keller, TX
This Sony SRS-XP700 Portable Bluetooth Speaker has blown me away. Even from the moment I hit the power button, and the warm, deep welcome tone sounded, I sensed this speaker was going to be good.
Linking to my phone couldn't have been easier, press the bluetooth button on top for 5 or so seconds and then look for it in the bluetooth setting on your phone. Fired up a recent favorite of mine 'Hurt - by One Desire'. The bass was instantly punchy, you could feel it in your chest and your furniture! I was not expecting so much bass from a completely wireless bluetooth speaker. And it is constant bass, it doesn't fade as you turn it up. There appears to be some kind of witchcraft going on inside this speaker!
The set up consists of front and rear tweeters for room filling, omnidirectional sound, and x-balanced main speaker units combined with Sony's infamous 'MEGA BASS™' system providing a pounding soundtrack. This speaker handles all genres of music thrown at it with ease. The x-balanced speakers are a unique Sony development that enable to keep the bass punch at higher volumes, without sacrificing clarity.
I have a very open living room with 22ft ceilings, and this speaker absolutely fills the space with a hall like sound, at only half volume. And the beauty is, that being omnidirectional, the sound is everywhere, you can walk around the house and while you know where the speaker is, it is not 'obvious'. There is just sound in the room.
The speaker does come with a power cord, so you can run it plugged in, but if you want to take it away from the electrical grid, the internal battery lasts for around 25 hours, without compromising the sound quality or that incredible bass. And if you need to 'top it off', a quick 10 minute charge gives you an additional 3 hours of playback time. Great charging technology included in this astounding speaker. There is a button in the center on the back that when pressed gives you a voice prompt of the battery life.
Along the handle and the base are discrete LED lights that dance and flash along with the music, but they are also completely controllable using the Sony 'Fiestable' app which is a downloadable companion. Install the app and then you can go in and change all sorts of settings on the speaker for full LED control. You an also sync to your phone to use it as an additional light source. You can turn the LEDs off with a button on the back, or using the app.
And talking of apps, download the Sony Music Center app for complete control of the speaker. You can adjust many settings from the app, including the MEGABASS, Live and Custom equalizer to tune the speaker to your liking control over Bass, Mids and Treble exactly as you want it. You can also see a complete and accurate battery life indicator here.
On the back under the IPX4 rated cover, there are controls for gain and volume to use this speaker as a karaoke speaker or as a guitar amp, to make this speaker a complete all rounder. Imagine that - hook up your guitar and just take it wherever you want for a full days worth of sound. There are two USB ports under that cover as well, so you can bring your own flash drive with music on it, OR you can create a wired connection to your phone, which not only gives you audio clarity, but also charges your phone from the internal battery. This speaker is so versatile!
On the top are some simple buttons to play/pause, connect to bluetooth, turn on/ff and control the MEGABASS. These are rubberized to maintain its water resistance. This speaker is NOT waterproof, but water resistant so it can be used near a pool without fear of it being splashed, or having drinks spilled on it. But it cannot be submersed in a pool for example. And also on top is a long slot, which is designed as an iPad/iPhone stand for when you want to have full control using the apps, or if you want to use the speaker in Karaoke mode. A useful addition to the top of the speaker.
Inside the speaker is a motion sensor, and it has rubber feet on the base, but also along one side. When you change the orientation of the speaker, the speaker adapts and switches the orientation of the tweeter output to maintain it's phenomenal sound. There is a slight pause in the music as the sensor adjusts (half a second) so that you know the sound orientation has changed.
You can pair this speaker to another one, and assign it a left and right channel, to give full stereo sound, OR just use them both as a 'party chain' to fill an even larger space with sound and light.
As far as portability, yes, it is completely wireless, but with it's internal battery and unique speakers system, this speaker is not light at a little over 37lbs including the battery. You will be using both carry handles as you move it around. But all in all, I think that is a small price to pay for the incredible sound and stamina that this speaker has.
The Summary:
This is absolutely, the BEST wireless, bluetooth, portable speaker I have ever used. I've been blown away by it from day one, the sound is incredible, clear, strong and very bass heavy, which I personally love, it's so versatile and acts as a 'complete system'. Highly recommended!

Innovative Case, Great Sound!
on May 16, 2021
Posted by: Cupra
from Keller, TX
These Bowers & Wilkins PI7 adaptive noise canceling earbuds are sleek, comfortable and well made.
Opening the very nice packaging, you get the earbuds (white with what appears to be an aluminum cap that houses the touch areas for the controls of the ear buds), the charging case, a charging cable (USB-C to USB-C), a data connection cable (USB-C to 3.5mm) and a selection of different sized earbud tips (3 pairs total).
They arrived with somewhat of a charge so I was able to check them out right away. When charging, they have a green flashing strip light on the front. To pair them, there is a small button on the inside of the case that when pressed for a couple of seconds, the strip light on the front changes blue to show they are in pairing mode. Charging is recommended for 3 hours, and then they last for about 4 hours or so on that one charge, and then the case carries another 4 charges, so you should be able to get close 20 hours out of them before having to do a full recharge of the case.
The earbuds paired and sync'd with my iMac flawlessly, and continue to do so every time I pick them up out of the case. They have a fast pair function that works with Android, but on Apple products I found them to pair perfectly quickly. I've used them for several Teams meetings this week, the sounds has been incredibly clear, precise, and didn't waiver at any time at all. The adaptive noise canceling worked really well (I chose to keep it 'ON' rather than opting for 'AUTO' as I didn't like when it would adapt and make the people I was talking to sound out of place, amongst the ambient sound). I prefer to have the noise canceling active when wearing them. Watching YouTube videos, the sound has been clear, defined and warm, with strong mid and highs, but not a huge amount of bass. It's there, but I prefer a little more. The adaptive noise canceling definitely helps in that area, as it seems to isolate the earbuds, offering more bass as a result.
When you take them out of your ears, they pause whatever you are listening to, and when you place them back in your ears, the sensor resumes playing whatever your source was. I've worn them for a couple of hours at a time in meetings. They fit well in my ears, although after an hour or so, the earbud did begin to make my left ear ache. I would however suggest this is more than likely due to the shape of my ear, rather than the earbud, as my right ear had no such issue.
The case! This is the party piece. It can be charged wirelessly, I did that no problem at all with a Samsung Wireless charger I have, you can charge it via the included USB-C cable, and you can also tether the charger/case to a computer, which in turn changes the charger in to a bluetooth dongle and transmits the sound to the ear buds. So if you have a product that uses a 3.5mm jack for headphones, you can transmit from your device to these earbuds. Pretty neat, and not something I've seen before.
Ergonomically, the case is small, smooth and will fit in a pocket nicely. It will not stand up on it's own, unless you place it on it's lid. Or you can lay it on it's side, to show the charging light. I expected that lid panel to be made from aluminum, especially at the price point, but it is silver plastic.
One thing I noticed, I don't see a mention of it in the instructions, and I don't see anything in the app either, but among the usual controls of play, next track, previous track, answer calls etc, there are NO VOLUME CONTROLS at all. That surprised me, there is no way to adjust the volume with the earbuds, only the device you have them connected to. They are not the loudest earbuds, I felt like I had to turn them up louder than other earbuds I own in order to get to the desired volume I wanted.
If you download the Bowers & Wilkins app you can also control the headphones settings, turn on and off the adaptive noice canceling and perform software updates. It's a simple app with not too many features added to it, but it works, and pairs with the earbuds quickly. I have other Bower & Wilkins headphones and the app differentiates between the two when they are near.
Overall, these earbuds are expensive, but they are well designed, they are comfortable for the most part, lightweight, and high performing. Are they worth $400, the jury is still out on that one. I like them. I like them a lot, but it's a lot to invest in them as well. Great around sound from a small package, with a Macgyver of a case that charges them, wirelessly charges itself, and acts as a transmitter. Pretty smart stuff!

Great Smart Air Purifier for Small/Medium Rooms.
on May 13, 2021
Posted by: Cupra
from Keller, TX
The Filtrete Smart Air Purifier is a great addition to your home office or bedroom.
As a 3M brand, the Filtrete Air Purifier uses 3M HEPA filters, which means it has the capacity to capture 99.97% of airborne particulates.
Set up is really simple, you unpack it, plug it in and turn it on. It fires into life and is cleaning the air right away. The filter comes preinstalled, so nothing to deal with there. It uses a laser-based air quality sensor to monitor the tiny particles in the air to determine the fan speed for air cleaning quality. When poor air quality is detected, in Auto Mode it ups the fan speed to compensate and clean the air more vigorously.
The magic happens when you download the Filtrete app for iOS and Android. Once installed, you press the light button on the air purifier for 5 second and a blue 'WiFi' light will illuminate. Follow the prompts in the app, connect to your WiFi network, input the 6 digit code found just under the filter cover in the center (there are two release catches - one on each side as you slide your hand around the front of the cover). Input the code and you are ready to go. The app shows you the current air quality, the room temperature, fan speed, timer settings, brightness, filter life, and the pollutants. If you tap on the round area, you get a live graph of the air quality readings hourly, daily and monthly.
You can control the fan speed, brightness, and power on and off with the app, and the app also integrates seamlessly with Alexa (and Hey Google), so you can use your voice to control all these settings via the Filtrete Alexa Skill. I had no issues at all connecting to the air purifier with the app, and no issues with the connection for voice control either. It's a very slick and intuitive app that does predominantly what you expect it to do (more about that later). It also sends notifications to your phone when it detects poor air quality and also when the issue is resolved. It will also notify you when you need to change the filter as well. You can also set a timer, but you cannot set a schedule at this time, to recur each night for example, or only the hours you are in your home office.
You can set the fan speed to a setting 1-4 for your personal preference, or you can let the machine do it for you based on the pollutants in the air, using 'Auto Mode'. You can turn off all illumination if you are using it in a bedroom.
The information guide suggests changing the filter out every 6 months (180 days) however, in my experience of using it so far, the filter life monitor is dropping around 1% per day (with the air quality reading between 0-4) so at that rate, I would need to change at 100 days. Not the end of the world and the F2 size 3M replacement filters are less than $20 which is very reasonable for HEPA filters.
Overall I've been very impressed with the Filtrete Smart Air Purifier, it is smart, it functions well, but I do wish that it had a scheduling functionality built into the app. Surely with the timer feature, a scheduling function should be possible with an app tweak. Otherwise this is a great unit that help keep the air in your home clean and safe.

Works better than expected, but cheap feeling.

The Mr Coffee 'Iced' Single Serve Iced Coffeemaker is a neat countertop addition.
Overall, I'm very impressed with the iced coffee that this machine produces, it does chill rapidly, without a fancy chilling system, and doesn't dilute the coffee at all. It really does make iced coffee in just 4 minutes, is nice and compact, and brews flavorful coffee every time that doesn't get watered down in the tumbler.
Have to admit that I was skeptical, especially when I didn't see any special 'chilling' component in the machine, or visible way of cooling down the coffee for it to be iced, but with a little trial and error, we managed to replicate pretty successfully the 'coffee house' drinks my wife and I are accustomed to, that tasted just as good, and were chilled nicely. We also tried flavored tea in the machine, however this resulted in very weak flavored tea, so I wouldn't recommend using the machine to make iced tea.
MAKING YOUR ICED COFFEE:
With the machine unplugged (Mr Coffee recommended that the machine is unplugged when not using it and before filling it up to prevent accidental brewing), take the included 22oz double walled tumbler and fill it up to the water mark (about halfway up the tumbler), lift the lid on the coffeemaker, remove the filter housing and pour that into the water container in the top of the coffeemaker. Replace the filter housing, place the ultra-durable, reusable gold tone coffee filter in the filter housing and add a scoop of your favorite coffee grounds. Close the lid. Take your tumbler and fill it up to the 'ice' line with ice and place it under the spout of the coffeemaker, in the recess.
Plug in the machine, slide the 'drip stop' lever to the left and press start. The machine fires into life making hot, yes HOT coffee. This is where I was skeptical, that it was going to a) not be iced coffee, and b) would be watered down. As the hot coffee comes out, it does indeed melt a small hole through the ice, but the added water is negligible, definitely NOT watering down the coffee. Brewing continues, the small hole in the center goes all the way down to the bottom of the tumbler, and helps cool the coffee on the way down. Once finished brewing, slide the 'drip stop' lever to the right, and unplug the machine.
Now you can add your creamer or syrup to the coffee, and place the stainless steel straw in your beverage.
CLEVER!:
One thing you will notice is the instant cool transfer from the ice and the coffee to the straw, and being stainless steel, it remains cold, adding to the sensation of having an ice cold beverage. Very clever!
IN SUMMARY:
For quick and flavorful iced coffee, this machine is a great addition to your beverage arsenal!
My reason for removing one star from the rating is that this machine is somewhat cheap feeling, not very substantial in its build quality, and in my experience, the filter housing took some finagling to get in place each time, it wasn't a sure fit. That would be my only complaint about the machine overall.

Blew My Expectations Away
on March 23, 2021
Posted by: Cupra
from Keller, TX
I'll be honest, I was skeptical about a 'full size' cordless vacuum and it's abilities. Range anxiety. Effective cleaning. Weight.
Rest assured, this Dyson Outsize will absolutely change your opinion on all of those factors and more, about what is possible with a full size cordless vacuum.
First off, CHARGE THE BATTERIES! Don't be tempted to play around with the machine, charge them first for 4.5 hours for optimal battery life.
You couldn't ask for a better array of accessories and power than with this vacuum. It comes with 2 battery packs for a run time of 120 mins, that can be charged on or off of the machine. Two charging power cords are included as well, so you can charge both batteries at the same time. Now that makes sense, right?! And it also comes with a wall mounted dock, so you can charge the vacuum battery while it's in the vacuum, hung on the wall, and charge the other battery separately, ready for a quick change to prolong you vacuuming time. The tools it comes with include the main high torque XL head cleaner, a hair screw tool, mini soft dusting brush, dirt brush, a combination tool and a crevice tool.
In my experience with the vacuum, when I initially charged the battery and set about vacuuming my wood floors, in ECO mode, showed 78 mins of runtime. Across 2 batteries, that would equate to 156 mins! However, this does change, dependent on MODE, and FLOOR TYPE. If you set to AUTO mode (recommended), the suction increases, and the sensor in the head monitors the surface type, looking for carpet, wood floor, tile etc and adjusts the suction automatically. Obviously, with more suction, comes less run time, and with carpet, even more suction and less run time. On a full charge, my vacuum showed 34 mins run time on AUTO when on carpet.
If you switch to BOOST mode, you get the maximum suction available from the vacuum, and I swear this machine almost sucked the carpet off the floor in that mode. I tested it pretty intensely in this mode, cleaning all the carpet downstairs in this mode, and it showed 17 mins run time in BOOST mode. And it lasted all of that time. I ran it till it powered out, it gives you a 2 minute warning before losing complete power, I switched back to AUTO mode and got another 2 mins of run time. Very impressed with how it adapts, but I can't stress how good the suction is on this machine.
The high suction is due to the new Hyperdymium motor, coupled with heavy duty long life batteries. And it works. I never thought I would be so excited to vacuum the floors. Not only does it have the best suction of any vacuum cleaner I've owned (and I own two other Dyson products), coupled with it's full size bin means you really can clean the whole house with both batteries. I live in a 4000sqft house, with about 2500 sqft of carpet. I was able to deep clean my carpets, and cover the wood floors and tile all within the battery charge.
I vacuum regularly, I am somewhat OCD, however, on BOOST mode, I was amazed (and also disgusted) with what this Dyson was able to pull out of my carpet - especially as I had vacuumed the day before with our Dyson DC50. This Dyson Outsize just blew me away. I am incredibly impressed with its cleaning ability, its robustness, is ease of maneuverability, its durability and its battery life. And being cordless is so freeing. You don't have to keep check of the power cord, and in my case, moving the plug from outlet to outlet, limited by a 30ft cord. It really is such a great feeling to not be tethered. Makes it all feel like less of a chore.
I've included pictures of everything that comes with the vacuum, the LCD display during vacuuming, an image of the dirt it was able to pull from the carpet on BOOST mode, what the carpet looked like after, and it's adaptability to be used on stairs as well. It is a very versatile machine.
It is not the lightest stick vacuum out there, but that is because it's designed for long lasting battery life, and extensive cleaning, so the bigger dust bin, the battery capacity etc adds to the weight. It's not uncomfortable to use at all, but be mindful it is heavier than say a Dyson V7 Fluffy which is our other Dyson cordless vacuum.
However, the Dyson Outsize will replace both of them because is it really is THAT GOOD. I wholeheartedly recommend this Dyson Outsize vacuum cleaner. The combination of cutting edge technology, battery life and cleaning ability as the title says, BLEW ME AWAY! Nice one Dyson!

Great, Feature Packed Kettle!
on January 19, 2021

from Keller, TX
I'm British. I drink tea. Hot tea! Our kettle runs 24/7.
If you want hot water, at a pre-determined temperature every time, this new Electric Kettle from GE Appliances with Digital Control not only looks good, it works well and does exactly that!
Setting up the kettle couldn't be easier, it has a separate power base that you plug into an outlet in your kitchen, and you can curl up excess cord in the base, keeping your countertop clutter-free. Press the button on the middle of the lid to reveal a lid pull, pull off the lid and fill up the kettle with water. On the inside right as you look down inside the kettle are MIN and MAX marking for the water level. Choose your desired amount of water, place the lid back on top, press the middle button on the lid to hid the pull, and place it on the base.
The Kettle will beep and begin flashing on the digital display, the last setting you had the kettle set to. You can adjust the temp setting to several preset temperature settings which take into account temperatures for different types of specialty tea, (Green Tea, Earl Grey etc, which infuse better at different temperatures). You cannot choose a specific temperature, lets say you wanted 150ºF, you cannot choose that specific temp, but only preset temperatures determined by GE.
Once you've chosen the temperature you want, press the power button and the kettle will begin warming. The display will then show the current temperature of the water and rise accordingly as the temperature inside rises. The kettle is absolutely silent between 72ºF and 97ºF and then you hear the usual kettle boiling sounds. It takes around 2.5-3 minutes to get the water up to it's max temp 212ºF, and does it with no fuss at all. Two beeps confirm that the kettle has achieved the desired temperature. The inside base of the kettle did tarnish after first use, so it will need regular cleaning as it goes through its continual boiling cycles. It's taken a moment to get used to the 'wide mouth' pouring spout, but in reality, it works really well, the way the water flows through the openings in the grill are not only aesthetic, but functional to stop the water just gushing out and making a mess, it actually pours smoothly and freely.
There is a 'Warm' button that will maintain the heat in the water for 30 minutes and then turn off. It also features a 'boil dry' sensor and will not allow the kettle to run with no water in it for piece of mind.
In my experience, the kettle did not 'Stay Cool' as featured, but it certainly wasn't 'scalding hot' when I touched the kettle after boiling. You can place your hands on the kettle after it's boiled and it will not scald you. The lid however was in fact cool to the touch after boiling. So while not 'cool to the touch' on the sides of the kettle, it is cool enough not to burn/scald children if they were to reach up and touch the kettle.
My reason for 4 stars, is that the mechanism to take off the lid and put it back on is a little cumbersome. When I press the button, it sticks halfway, meaning I have to pull it up, before I can pull off the lid. And then when replacing the lid, there are 3 little triangular clips that are there to secure the lid, but don't make it easy to replace the lid, along with lining up the semi circular spout at the same time. It would have been nicer to have had a dedicated lid handle, and a completely round lid.
Secondly, the markings for the water level are ONLY on the right hand side, INSIDE the kettle. I am left handed, therefore pick up the kettle with my left hand to fill it. This means I don't get to see the water level markings, I have to lean over the kettle and look at them from the opposite side. This kettle is replacing a previous digital kettle I owned, that had the water level built into the handle, with an LED light to illuminate it. And talking of the handle, it would be nice if it wasn't square edged, it's not very ergonomic for carrying boiling hot water.
Overall a great kettle, does what it says it should do, and does it well. A couple of tweaks and it could be excellent!

Impressive Air Purifier, Works Well!
on January 11, 2021
Posted by: Cupra
from Keller, TX
Designed in Sweden, under the Unilever umbrella of brands, the Blueair 'Blue Pure 311 Auto' Air Purifier is a simple, honest, no frills air purifier that does exactly what it says it will do, and does it well.
A simple plug and play, very minimalist unit, very in keeping with Swedish Style, all you have to do is plug it in and press the button on top. This sets it into auto mode, and it will kick into life, very quietly indeed. The sensors inside monitor the air quality and adjust the fan speed as necessary to clean the air in the a room up to 388 sqft. Designed for medium sized rooms, with a sleek grey outer filter (that is interchangeable with other colored filters available from Blueair), protects the main 2 stage HEPA filter from large particle debris, such as pet dander, hair and dust. The particle and carbon filter is effective against Pollen, Pet Dander, Dust, Bacteria and Viruses, VOCs (paint fumes etc), Chemicals, Smoke (cigarette), Dust Mites, Mold and Cooking Odors.
The HEPASilent filter system ensures that you get the maximum air quality in the shortest time, with minimum noise. In my experience, the sensors are sensitive, and they do react to changes in the air almost instantly. I have it set up in my master bedroom, and even walking past it, you can hear it kicking into medium speed, to counteract the stirring of the air and any particulate that may come through, in most cases it's freshly sprayed deodorant from myself or perfume from my wife. It kicks into high gear when the air quality is deemed too poor, and a red indicator lights up on the front. It works quickly and efficiently and helps get the air quality back to acceptable levels without fuss. I've noticed a marked difference in the air quality in the master bedroom, especially overnight, when you can get that 'sleepy air' odor. That has all but disappeared now, which is very nice indeed.
You can bypass the auto setting by pressing the button on the top and choose night, medium or high, or off. The night mode maintains the lowest setting, and turns off all LED illumination for uninterrupted sleep.
I do wish this feature was included in the 'auto' setting, so that it would automatically set to night mode, at a predetermined time. That would save having to adjust it every night before going to bed. This air purifier is NOT app enabled either, so you can't schedule it to come on and off at certain times. That would be a nice feature, or to be able to control it via Alexa or Google via voice would be a welcome addition.
Overall tho, this is a simple and very easy to use unit, that is really silent in it's low mode, and only kicks it up a notch when the sensors detect a change in the air quality, ramping up the fan speed. You can purchase different colored outer filters to match your decor online on the manufacturers website, and also sign up for a filter replacement program that will ship out new filters before the current ones expire, should you so choose to.

Amazing Atmos System, but Who Stole the Bass?
on December 30, 2020
Posted by: Cupra
from Keller, TX
On paper, the Samsung Soundbar Q950T is a really nice piece of kit. In reality, it has two main shortcomings.
There is a distinct, and concerning lack of bass from the subwoofer. The system sounds decent when cranked up, when you get the speakers working, you hear the bass kick in, but even then it isn’t anywhere near as defined and sonorous as I expected it to be, especially in this price range.
The display is in totally the wrong place. It makes absolutely no sense at all to be on top of the soundbar. When sat enjoying your soundbar, you cannot see the display at all. Even the viewing angle is sharp, so you have to be pretty much on top of it to view it. A self-dimming, larger front display would have been a much better option on device.
Out of the box, you get the main sound bar, the subwoofer, two rear wireless speakers, an HDMI cable and 4 power cables. (The rear speakers have power cables to them, but the audio signal is wireless).
Set up was simple, all speakers paired up straight away with the soundbar and I was able to connect via Bluetooth to my phone very easily. I chose to purchase additional wall mount brackets for the rear speakers and attached them to the wall, near power outlets in my son’s playroom. They are relatively unobtrusive as far as rear surround speakers go. They have front firing and Atmos top firing speakers built into them.
Being an immersive Dolby Atmos 9.1.4 system, it definitely throws the sound around the room and is one of the better soundbars I’ve tested at moving the sound around the room. The .4 in the name is for the 4 Dolby Atmos speakers, 2 of which are on top of the rear speakers and 2 are on the top of the sound bar. The soundbar throws the sound far and wide very well. The first show I watched was Lost in Space on Netflix. With a 4K passthrough and Dolby Atmos signal, it really looked and sounded great in the room. But as I mentioned above, the bass response is next to nothing at lower volumes, and fairly mild at higher volumes. I even disconnected the sub from the soundbar and re-paired them together and it didn’t make any difference. I power cycled it as well, still with no improvement.
The soundbar has 3D Audio Codec Support, offering up an immersive 3D soundscape, using either a Dolby Atmos or DTS:X signal. The sound really does surround you, far better than other soundbars I’ve used. The soundbar is also optimized for the Samsung QLED Q-Symphony TVs which expands the soundscape further.
The wireless speakers have performed flawlessly, remained connected consistently, and offer a warm, and present sound, helping engulf you in your audio experience. The soundbar also has ‘Alexa Built-In’, and I thought it was neat to know that when you power down the soundbar, you can say ‘Alexa’ and the soundbar will wake up and respond. It was quick to respond and accurate with the information.
Pairing the soundbar to the Samsung Smart Things App was easy, but didn’t really add a lot of benefit. You can adjust the subwoofer input, but moving the slider really didn’t make a lot of difference to me at all. You can adjust the equalizer as well, but again, didn’t make a huge amount of difference at all either. You can check your wifi connectivity/and perform software updates (there are none at this time).
I found that you get the full impact of the bass at 100% volume, but at that volume, the center channel and additional sound becomes tinny and overbearing, with the want to keep that bass sound, but tone down the rest of the sound, but you simply can’t do it. In contrast, I have another soundbar at a similar price point in my study and even in it’s lowest volume settings, the bass is present and thumping. So I was really disappointed to find the Samsung really lacking in the bass department.
In summary, the Dolby Atmos sound really is impressive from this soundbar, but listening to that amazing sound without a strong and competent bass not to accompany it, you are missing half the experience. Explosions don’t sound like explosions, they sound like an inconvenience. And the display being on top of the soundbar is a complete oversight by the designers.
I was really excited to get the soundbar set up, and came away disappointed.

Philips 3200 Series Fully Automatic Espresso Machine w/ LatteGo, Black

Can it do cold drinks as well as hot? And what is the maximum volume it can brew? Can it brew a whole pot of coffee?

No, this machine does not do cold drinks. It has 5 pre-set coffee settings, and a hot water setting. It brews single cups at a time, so won't brew a whole pot at one time.
