Nice Smart TV Interface

I needed a TV for an extra room, primarily for the kids to watch their own TV shows. I got a great deal on this TV. As for picture quality, it's what you'd expect for a budget HD TV that lacks all the latest features like 4k, HDR, etc. because that's what this is. Still, for what it is, it's quite good. And you really don't need any higher resolution or features on a TV of this size.
The interface is very easy to setup. The remote is pretty nice, if a bit spartan (similar to what you'd get with a Roku). Since the interface is Roku, you get all Roku features an apps, which is great! My kid can watch netflix, hbo, amazon prime, nickelodeon, and even a subset of live Spectrum (TWC) cable channels. Some other smart TVs I looked at that don't use Roku interface can't necessary get all of those.
I deducted a start because I've needed to actually reboot the interface a couple of times in the last 6 weeks or so because, as my kid says, the interface started "glitching out." Hopefully a software update will make this a thing of the past, but be aware these smart features bring typical "smart" device problems to a TV set.

This is my second Echo Dot (first one was first generation). The new price point makes these a no-brainer. I use mine daily to check the weather, get my morning tech/science news, and listen to music in the shower. It also does a great job as an alarm clock. Note that the speaker quality is fine for basic Q&A stuff, but if you want music to sound good, plan to use this with an external speaker (bluetooth or wired), or get the full-sized Echo.

I upgraded from the SB6131 at the advice of the TWC technician. I was having reliability problems with my connection due to an issue with TWCs lines. the additional channels of this model enabled my connection to become much more stable until they could resolve their issue. In addition, it will future-proof my situation because if TWC ever brings Gb cable speeds here, this bad boy can handle it.

I bought this with my z Force and put it on, configured it to "efficiency mode." I have not removed it since. The phone runs down to 80%, then this add on kicks in until it runs down, effectively giving the Force a 5700 mAh battery. I don't ever worry about running out of juice.
Yes, it makes the phone very heavy and thick, but who actually cares? Battery life is very important to me, so it's a fine trade off, plus I can remove it if I ever want to travel lighter.

I got this unit because I have an older HD TV without an optical audio out. I have 3 HDMI devices, so this was a good fit and allows switching of audio and video inputs with one remote (had to reprogram my universal, but it works great). The sound quality is good, especially with music. Bluetooth feature was key requirement and it works great. The system has good options for fine tuning the sound.
One issue I had was a sync issue when using the recommended high speed HDMI cables. Switched to older cable and it works fine.

I needed a small, inexpensive external hard drive to simply copy some large files onto, and then ship it off to someone else. This device is compatible with both PC and Mac, so I had that base covered. It's USB 3, so the file transfer was fast. Of all the models I saw at Best Buy the day I needed this, this was the cheapest and it still did the job great.
Overall it's a good value if you want a fast external hard drive of this size.

Standard Macbook Pro Adapter - same as stock unit

I needed a second AC adapter for my work laptop, a new model Macbook Pro, so that I could keep it in my bag, and use the original one at my desk without having to unplug it to travel. This product is absolutely identical to the one that comes with the laptop. That's good and what I expected, which is why it gets 5 starts.
The actual wall wart, though is a ridiculous design that takes up something like 2-3 slots on a typical power strip. Fortunately, Apple also includes an extension plug that neatly replaces the original and brings the profile down to something like a vacuum cleaner plug. Much better.
Also, with the extension plug, the adapter has a very generous length, which is great in conference rooms and such.

So for lights to be controlled do you have to purchase the light bulbs and or plug adapters?
Yes, you'll need some kind of home automation devices to use Alexa to control lights and such. I've had good luck with the TP-Link smart outlets and TP-Link smart light switches. Alexa works with many other automation systems besides TP-Link, but I like them because they don't require any sort of hubs or special light bulbs.

Would Echo Dot be useful in a older home?
Sure, why not? The home has nothing to do with it assuming you have working wifi in the home. I use mine to:
- listen to music (works best with an external speaker, but can work on its own here too)
- get news updates
- get the weather
- connect to my home automation lighting devices (I use TP Link devices, which only require a 2.4GHz wifi network in the house and don't need any special home wiring, hubs, etc).
- general wikipedia lookups and questions

How do I connect the sound bar to my TV if the TV has no optical connection, or an HDMI marked "ARC"?
I've tried hooking the HDMI cable from the TV to the HDMI #1 on the sound bar, as well as the HDMI "TV" outlet on the sound bar. I have a Blu-Ray player connected, & working just fine. The TV in question is an RCA 46 inch LCD from 3 years ago, with 4 HDMI connections, a white & red L-R audio connection, yellow video & white & red L-R connections, & a 'Digital Audio' connection. And remember that I cannot hook up the Sony-supplied 'optical' cable to the TV, as there is no connection.
Connect your hdmi devices to the sound bar inputs hdmi 1, 2 &3 or analog input they aren't hdmi, then use the hdmi output on the device to send to one of the tv's hdmi inputs. This works fine for me without an arc connection... arc is only useful if you have inputs going to tv and want to send them to the sound bar, but not needed if you run your devices to the sound bar first then out to tv.
