A haunting sense of loss pervades the first few episodes of the musical dramedy's fifth season, due to the sudden and untimely death of actor Cory Monteith on July 13, 2013. The season's third installment, "The Quarterback," serves as a fitting tribute and a heartbreaking farewell to both Monteith and his character, Finn Hudson. As the season progresses, the storylines alternate between the gang at McKinley High and the alumni who have moved to New York City. Several cast members, including Heather Morris, Amber Riley, Mark Salling and Harry Shum Jr., cease being regular players in Season 5 but still appear occasionally as guest stars. The main cast includes Matthew Morrison, Lea Michele, Jane Lynch, Kevin McHale, Darren Criss, Jenna Ushkowitz, Chord Overstreet, Chris Colfer, Naya Rivera, Jacob Artist, Melissa Benoist, Blake Jenner, Alex Newell and Becca Tobin.

The opening episode that pays tribute to the late Cory Montheith is incredibly moving and wonderful.. Sadly, the rest of the season just falls apart to horrible writing and poor plotlines. The musical numbers are amazing and the actors good but the show seems a pale imitation of itself and a shame to see it sink so low after such fine creative heights.

By now, most have seen GOTG and loved it. If you haven't, you should, the mix of comic book action and fantastic sci-fi adventure is great but the humor, the rock score and more make it a classic. Throw in a star-making performance by Chris Pratt and the fun of Groot and even if you're not a Marvel fan, you'll love how this plays out. The extras are good with a commentary by James Gunn and features on the making of the film. Overall, one of the best Marvel films yet and a must-have for any sci-fi buff.
It may be cartoonish at times and spread out but the second film of the Hobbit trilogy still offers some great action such as a wild river chase. The story may be filler in places but Smaug himself is wonderfully brought to life for a terrifying attack and makes you admire Jackson's passion for the project. The additional material fills in some blanks and gives a bit more weight than the original version to enjoy. The extras are terrific, over 10 hours of behind the scenes footage from production to making a new beginning/ending for a trilogy and the FX. For any fan of the LOTR movies, a must have to enhance the experience.
Season 5 of the supernatural drama, based on the novels by L.J. Smith, begins with Elena (Nina Dobrev) and Caroline (Candice Accola) moving into a dorm at nearby Whitmore College and looking forward to a normal freshman experience. Unfortunately, things quickly go sideways when their third roommate, Megan (Hayley Kiyoko), is murdered at a frat party by a vampire, and Elena learns that Megan had a connection to her late father. Meanwhile, Katherine (Dobrev) struggles adapting to being human again after 500 years as a vampire and asks Damon (Ian Somerhalder) to help her now that she is vulnerable to her many enemies. At the top of that list is Stefan's evil doppelgänger Silas (Paul Wesley), who is holding Stefan in a locked box under the sea. Katherine is also disturbed to meet a mysterious young woman named Nadia (Olga Fonda), who reveals to her a secret that dates back to 1490 Bulgaria. As for Bonnie (Kat Graham), she remains trapped on the Other Side and can only communicate with the recently resurrected Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen). But unbeknownst to them the Other Side itself is in danger of imploding.

This season of Vampire Diaries may not be as excellent as others as a lot of plotlines drag and the mythology gets very complicated. But it still has more good than bad with its terrific cast, especially Nina Dobrev in dual roles, some terrific twists and a biting sense of humor amid the carnage. A special feature on its 100th episode showcases its popularity and between vampires, ghosts and other supernatural antics, it's still a fun show to enjoy and more than worth owning for fans.

It may start off slow but Agents of SHIELD kicks in big-time in its last episodes. The cast is great and showcases the fun of a procedural in the Marvel Universe while the FX can be a bit lacking at times. The first half of the season drags a bit, more filler stuff but thanks to the twist of "Captain America the Winter Soldier," the last half-dozen episodes are absolutely fantastic. Extras include commentaries and behind the scenes stuff to enhance it so if you're a Marvel movie fan, this is more than worth the purchase to enjoy.
