Video security; internal or subscription storage.

TP Link TC85 3PK SMART Tapo Wire-Free Magnetic Security Camera
TP Link’s approach to security cameras puts maximum value on flexibility of location and a simple setup regime. No wires are required. Period. The magnetic mounting base ensures adjustments and battery access are convenient. WiFi connection range is proving to be exceptional. Battery longevity is promised (300days!) to be excellent. IP66 rating (Able to protect against powerful water jets for 3+ minutes) lets you place the camera exposed to weather with no fear. And I get to choose whether I want to use internal storage or pay for a subscription. So, I’ve been using these for a few days and will share some observations. There are many more features.
SECURITY CAMERA CATEGORY:
Wi-FI Access required, NOT wired by ethernet.
Battery powered, NO power wire; no POE
I do not add or subtract “stars” when reviewing security cameras based on the PRESENCE of these features. Different design objectives are neither right or wrong. I do try to determine how successful these features are implemented. It may be very important to another buyer to know how connectivity and power are addressed, but my opinion is not in the score. Other camera types might work better for you.
SETUP: TP Link’s TC85 series relies on their App which can be downloaded from Apple and Android stores. The process is step by step, with accompanying instructions, as well as pointing out what you’re looking for. TP Link has made the effort to ensure that we will succeed setting up their cameras. I’ve used cameras from various manufactures, and it doesn’t get better. It would be fair to describe TP’s instructions as a security camera primer because they provide advice, explanations, and trouble shooting. They do this while not getting too wordy.
Within the setup process TP Link offers a sales pitch for their recording storage service. It is detailed and short and has a NEXT tab to skip to alternative methods. That alternative is NO recording storage, or simply a live video feed. Or, you can insert a Class 10 (or higher) microSD memory card with storage from 8GB to 512GB. The TC85 camera will format the card for you.
Every imaginable camera parameter is accounted for on the main video image page (Talk, Alarm, Privacy, Light, image tagging). Playback & download are here also. These basic ON/OFF switches are repeated in the SETTINGS (Behind the Gear) where you can fully modify the sensitivity, volume, brightness, and update with new firmware. AI processing allow the camera’s notification to identify the type of object it has recognized using its motion detector. I can set up activity zones to further limit false notifications. Brilliant spotlights can be enabled or turned off as part of the detection feature set. TP notified me of a Firmware update later in my setup process. It was accomplished automatically and quickly. I believe TP-Link is continuing to fine-tune its detection algorithms. If my experience with their other products continues with the product, it’s a company that will keep improving these cameras.
SUMMARY and CONCLUSION: The TP Link TC85 offers a very high quality video security camera with advanced features, all simple to use, and manage. My accompanying pictures tell the story, and I feel confident that I will have a useful video clip if I ever need it for protecting my property. Images are crisp and colorful during the day. Night time pictures were very sharp and in focus for an extended distance while still providing color. The field of view was broader than previous cameras. I am hoping the TP Link improves the sensitivity of human and vehicle detection, as it seems not everything is being captured. Managing videos and images couldn’t be easier. The use of a magnetic mount lets me quickly access the camera so I can recharge it, or clean it, or re-aim it. Of course, an end user relying on the local microSD will need to mount the camera well out of reach if it’s visible.

An EPIC upgrade to my image and meeting staging.
on September 25, 2023
Posted by: TECHBEENGOOD
EPIC USB WEBCAM from JLAB
I’ve created a comfortable work station centered on a nice, really big monitor, with a separate keyboard/mouse all connected to my laptop, Before I attached this EPIC Webcam to my very large LG monitor, my current video camera was pushed off to one side because it’s embedded in my laptop. And this EPIC camera is much better in every viewing measurement. It’s sharper, far less grain, and crisp images. This is an improvement I'm very pleased with.
SPECS: JLAB’s EPIC Webcam does a good job upgrading my image while simplifying my home/ office meeting staging. The EPIC USB camera has been a great addition to my work station. It offers full 2k resolution, a 5 Megapixel sensor, operates at 30fps, has a 90 degree field of view, allows adjustable exposure and zoom.
SETUP: Plug it into a USB port, which on my MacBoo Pro 14” (2021) means I’ll use a connected hub or a dock. Unfold the not-really-a-clamp base so it straddles the top of your monitor or use the provided tripod screw location if you have a stand. In FaceTime or several other Meeting Apps I tested you will need to select the EPIC Webcam instead of the built-in FaceTime Cam. Using the appropriate meeting controls you should be able to view your image. Almost. I had an issue which seems unique to my MacBook Pro (2021) 14”.
I needed another step. First, keep I’m mind that the MacBook Pro (and many other computers) offer no way to modify or manipulate video parameters (such as brightness, contract, color, etc). Plug in a video camera and it should automatically replace, with adequate video parameter settings, the internal camera.
(As verified by JLAB …) the Epic add-on camera may need to be unplugged and reconnected. Or, as I discovered, I needed an add-on webcam software, seemingly to increase the camera’s image from its very dark picture to a more usable and brighter image. I looked for the least expensive App in the App store (Free!) and discovered that Spedal Webcam Software worked perfectly with the meeting software I tested, including FaceTime, Microsoft Teams and Zoom. I expect any other webcam software will do the same.
PERFORMANCE and SUMMARY: Once I sorted out the excessively dark image issue by using a Web Cam App (SPEDAL), the JLAB EPIC CAM performed wonderfully. JLab’s confirmation of my issue suggested this was unique and related to some Macs. I have no reason to complain in any event, as the necessary (for me) App was free and required little more than opening the extra App and moving the sliders to increase video gain. in fact, I’m glad I was forced to look for an App with features that allow further adjustments of the camera, because now I can do some color correction, modify brightness, contrast, sharpness and color balance.
The JLAB EPIC CAM’s own top control button for brightness worked as described, but it’s rather awkward and crude to use. Use an App. The Zoom was more limited but also more obvious in its variations. I suppose it is nice to have, but I’ll use a zoom in the meeting App if available. The picture from the EPIC was FAR superior to the image provided by my FaceTime camera. It was more natural and had better detail and color. Considering everything, the slight quirks and final outcome, this is a camera I can recommend and it will get significant use from me. For some folks, the few obstacles may be too frustrating, although it remains to be seen if this quirk is inherent to some equipment setups.

Satechi makes it work, and well!
on September 15, 2023
Posted by: TECHBEENGOOD
Satechi - Thunderbolt 4 Slim Hub: Does my review title suggest I’ve set the success bar too low for this Thunderbolt hub? Sorry. But you must not have tried buying and using these necessary devices before. Thunderbolt hubs can be very frustrating, often having quirky problems, or failing at the easy stuff, or not delivering the speed or adequate power. The Satechi is a serious alternative that works. With a total of 3 Thunderbolt 4 ports for adding peripheral devices (with another port for both power and/or data to/from the computer) this a potent device. It has no quirks I could find, it works well with my high speed devices, and I daisy chained my less capable hubs behind it to manage other less demanding peripherals. Everything works.
SETUP: My MacBook Pro M1 (2021), with an LG HDR 4K display, a SanDisk PRO-G40 SSD 2TB External Thunderbolt 3 storage, plus a Hyper - DUO PRO 7-in-2 USB-C Hub connecting to an external keyboard, mouse, and a pair of special purpose WD 5TB USB 3.0 DRIVES and my Gig ethernet connection to my ISP. I’m not sure what each devices’ power demand is, but each port delivers 15W and everything is performing fine.
I wish my photo of my connected Satechi was prettier, but connecting wires can be an ugly business. The connectivity provided by the Thunderbolt 4 Slim Hub allows me to hide most of my connections below the counter, below where my laptop, keyboard, mouse and secondary 4k screen are alone, sitting neatly arranged.
PERFORMANCE and CONCLUSION: That sleek looking hub, sitting in the now opened box, seems almost as heavy as my laptop (it isn’t), but it is solidly built. Picking apart the packing material reveals the power brick behind the power of the Satechi. It’s not light (0.6lbs) and not tiny (5”x1”x2”) which explains the first impression. But, it sits most often under my desk. The box also contained a USB-C to USB-C connector, but it’s not labelled as Thunderbolt so I provided my own cable for the connection to my laptop.
My current M1 pro configuration with its Thunderbolt4/USB-C ports can support a potential 40GB/s data transfer. The SanDisk Pro drive that I have connected advertises maximum Thunderbolt 3 speeds of 2700MB/s read and 1900MB/s write speeds. I achieved 2694 MB/s read and 2396 MB/s write speeds when using the Satechi hub or with it out of the path. It creates no bottleneck. My 4k LG monitor requires using an HDMI to USB-C adapter and worked perfectly.
The Satechi Thunderbolt Slim Hub provides a high degree of confidence that it will deliver speed and reliability. It’s a drama-free experience with all my devices getting along with each other.

Convenient, precise 2in1 hair dryer and styler
on August 25, 2023
Posted by: TECHBEENGOOD
Shark SmoothStyle Heated Comb Straightener and Smoother
The Shark Smoothstyle combines the features of my favorite hair dryer and hair brush to make styling an easier morning activity with just one tool. I achieve a similar final result, but it’s faster with a bit more control. With my current summer length, shorter hairstyle, I found it more challenging to wrap my hair around this larger brush. I can readily see that with shoulder length or longer hair, this stying tool offers even greater satisfaction. The SmoothStyler really shines with my daughter’s thicker, longer hair.
Some added comments:
This SmoothStyle tool is heavier than my usual hair dryer so I find holding the tip of the device using my other hand helps keep the process comfortable. The user guide recommends and illustrates this. It is very easy to manipulate around my head, but holding that end tip is the key.
The heat designations are pretty accurate and reach their heat setting quickly. Low is truly low. Medium is distinctively medium. And hot is very hot, and maybe too hot for me. And, finally, there is one more “dry hair” mode that heats the purple, ceramic coated, smooth combs up to a still higher temperature but with NO air flow. I measured heat settings using an uncalibrated infrared thermometer. I measured readings at all 3 fan blown settings: low=98F; medium:146F; high: 205F and the so-called “dry hair” mode, fan off, at 320F (after letting the indicator light turn green). If you are switching FROM the “dry hair” mode, the purple combs retain very high heat for a minute or more even though the instructions are correct in saying they are now off in the wet hair modes. (moisture turns to steam at 212F, so be careful)
The multi-dimensional, large or small bristles are distributed in a way that you can choose one or the other fairly easily by rotating the tool in your hand.
Noise level. Pretty loud and at a frequency (tone) that’s high pitched and annoying. I’m going to suggest using effective earplugs or your better noise cancelling earbuds. This should be mandatory if you expect to be around this styler for long stretches of time. I used a phone (uncalibrated) sound level App from dB, which showed an average 96dB level, which the App compares to the level of food blender. I’d agree. And this device is always really close to your ear. Use earplugs, my friends.
Recommendation: The Shark SmoothStyler does what it promises, and rather well at that. I think the longer your hair, the more you’ll appreciate it. It does have some issues, but none of them should be a surprise. Heat, noise, and some weight concerns, can be addressed with this decent styling/drying tool, and keep a set of earplugs in the bathroom vanity.

Eyes and ears that don’t sleep - Simple & powerful

Night Owl - 10 Channel 4K Wi-Fi NVR Security System with 1TB Hard Drive and 6 Wi-Fi IP 2K Deterrence Cameras with 2-Way Audio [BTWN81-F4-6L]
It’s only fair to mention I have been using a Night Owl security camera system on my property for a few years. There is a reason. The Night Owl systems are reliable, loaded with the features I prefer, and are so easy to manage. This new (summer ’23) system’s particular set of features directly addresses the concerns and requirements of many end users like me. They start with NO SUBSCRIPTIONS, ever, and feature cameras that can be monitored from my TV or a phone. The cameras wirelessly connect to the included digital recorder and have a 2K (2560 x 1440) resolution with the recorder capable of 3840 x 2160 resolution with updated cameras. Other features are described below.
SETUP: In this most recent version of their Wi-Fi based system, Night Owloffers the end user 2 ways to accomplish the setup. I chose the phone guided setup, but a manual setup requiring you to connect to either a monitor or a TV is available. (I’ve used this in the past, and it’s almost as easy.)
I connected the small, fully enclosed 1TB hard drive to both a power plug and an ethernet cable. I added both antenna. That’s it. It’s now that you realize this simply elegant design means you only need to consider power access and a nearby ethernet port (router, local ethernet switch) and you can place your security system just about anywhere. It’s time to download and install Night Owl’s powerful system management App.
Stay near your recorder for this initial camera setup, and proceed to plug each camera into a power outlet. You probably want to have a power strip ready to access, because you will eventually have 6 cameras plugged in. The App guides you with clear instructions and the loud clear voice coming out of each camera lets you know that the camera has been initialized and then that it has been added to your system. Be patient. It takes a few minutes for each camera, A few times I needed to back up one step and then the connection was made when I proceeded forward. A little patience and everything was connected. If my previous experience with Night Owl systems holds true, the quality of that initial wireless connection was NOT an indicator of the final connection quality. Final placement, even at a distance (as much as 60ft in my home), yielded a good to excellent Wi-Fi connection (between 1-2Mbps data transfer rate) which was always reliable and capable of a useful image. [Note: Night Owl does NOT use your wireless network. It establishes its own using a built-in router, meaning it doesn’t burden yours and, in fact allows you to separate from the internet if necessary for added security.]
Now comes the only hurdle. You’ve got to place each camera in a location where YOU want to monitor. But, there needs to be a power outlet nearby because each camera has its own small power brick and a lengthy, lightweight power cable. You might wonder if this “wireless” system has misled you and there was a better approach. And there might be. Night Owl, for one of a few example alternatives, offers a powered video system that has you pull wires from the recorder all the way to each camera. So, no local power needed, but there is a wire run with some poked holes along the way to each camera. It’s your call. For me, I ensure each camera location is near power or I bring power nearby. An extension cord often does it. Sometimes locations are a compromise, but there is always at least one.
OPERATION and PERFORMANCE: The MOST IMPORTANT message I should give you now is YOU DON”T NEED to do ANYTHING at all once your cameras are in place and registered with the recorder. The Night Owl system will capture the default MOTION, OBJECT DETECTION incidents and arrange them historically in the EVENT directory. It will not send NOTIFICATIONS unless you set this as enabled, but once enabled you can choose what types of events are sent to you. Your property is being watched by a security system and ONLY you have access to the recordings. They are on the Night Owl DVR sitting on your shelf. NO SUBSCRIPTIONS. Ever. No video sitting out on the Cloud.
You are able to select detection (ACTIVITY) zones for each camera and the level of sensitivity as well as the type of activity (Human, face, vehicle) or all. Night Owl even allows you to send AUDIO alerts, including a siren if it’s a critical location that you feel is critical.
From the LIVE VIDEO image you can select and enable the MICROPHONE, the SPOTLIGHT and the AUDIO alert.
The MENU structure is sensible and with no instructions I was able to follow the ICONS on the camera image to the related settings. From the GEAR in the upper right of each camera page I could discover all of the settings organized in one place. I can even change the camera names so they are easier to manage. Those images have a continuous readout of the data transfer speed, so I instantly know if I’m really connected and not capturing a frozen scene. A colored icon (red, yellow, green) is a further indicator.
IF YOU also have a monitor attached to your recorder (NVR), you can access an administrative menu of more management features (reformatting the hard drive, etc). There are complete “Export/Save Recordings” features also, here.
SUMMARY: I really like this newest [BTWN81-F4-6L] Night Owl system. Now that I have the cameras where I want them, with the settings set for each camera as I prefer, there is nothing left for me to do. If I want to monitor my backyard or my front door, I simply pop open the App and arrange the images so those specific locations or all locations are always displayed. If I want to review suspicious activity while I’m away, I can open the EVENTS library and scan down through the video clips. Or, with a large library, it’s probably easier to use the TIMELINE tool to quickly find the time period of interest and find the corresponding events.
NO SUBSCRIPTION is necessary. EVER. You can’t run out of storage space, because you can manage the hard drive (one terabyte) storage and choose to archive elsewhere.
The actual video clips are detailed, colorful, and provide all the information you need to make sense out of a recorded event.
Very nicely done. Highly recommended.

SmartShade control solves ergonomic problems.
on July 25, 2023
Posted by: TECHBEENGOOD
RYSE - SmartShade. We’ll probably buy a few more of these remote shade controls for purely indulgent reasons. In other words because I can be lazy. Isn’t that why we have any remote controls, anyway? This wonderful gadget has solved our geometry problem.
Our most useful shade is also our most annoying. It’s the black-out shade that sits 4 ft off the ground, but also 2.5 feet set back behind our kitchen sink, and the chain control is still higher. It covers the primary window directly across the open family from my 84”TV. Just as I prepare to watch programming later in the day, the bright western sun is displayed nicely on this screen. I think you can figure out the rest. My lovely 5’4” wife hasn’t got a chance, and my added 5” isn’t much more help when we lower each evening and raise it each morning.. The RYSE SmartShade solves the problem.
SETUP: The initial installation is a puzzle. No instructions in the box. No directions to a web tutorial. And don’t even think about intuitively attaching the device to your beaded chain, because none of the several button switches do anything yet, at this point. You need to find your way to the RYSE web site where you’re instructed to download an iOS app. In the App, you get a step by step install guide. You will want to remove the lower chain guide/anchor that came with your shade. Everything else is easy with a well thought out sprocket drive, and mechanical guide. The RYSE instructions clearly show how to determine the best window frame location, and two screws complete the job once you’ve properly located a motor assembly. You will need to push past the “bridge” install instructions and pursue the Bluetooth connection to get that motor moving and set your ”stops”. Again, not very intuitive.

Your shade’s beaded chain needs to be fairly tight as it enters/exits the Smart/shade device. I strongly recommend trying to avoid a “connecting” bead link pass through the device if at all possible. I had no choice, and a connecting bead actually chewed away a piece of the sprocket. Partly because my chain was too loose and partly because my connecting bead had a sharp edge it did some damage. Contacting RYSE support was very reassuring and they sent me another sprocket which is pretty easy to replace.
PERFORMANCE: The motor is very powerful and easily moves the chain through the mechanism. It looks like a fairly large shade can be managed. Once you’ve enabled the Bluetooth connection to the RYSE, everything is very easy to control. You don’t have to leave your seat, but you will need your phone. Otherwise, tap the buttons on the motor assembly. You can permanently plug in the power cable or instead charge the battery pack and attach it. All this must be considered early on in the install process to be sure you have sufficient clearance under the motor assembly.
CONCLUSION: The RYSE SmartShade can make awkwardly placed shades much easier to use. With the added features of the Bridge, a rather complex array of shades can be managed and scheduled. But with the device and your phone, there is sufficient control for a few shades. There is also potential for some frustrations. I’m going to need to figure out how to manage connection beads to minimize interfering with the movement of the chain through the mechanism. We like our newest automation gadget, but setup required more guesswork than necessary.

High performance in an easy, full featured printer
on June 10, 2023
Posted by: TECHBEENGOOD
HP - LaserJet Pro 4301fdw Wireless Color All-in-One Laser Printer
HP’s newest laser printer is a wonderful reminder of those early classic, high reliability HP printers that made this company famous. It is reasonably compact, but very heavy, stuffed with features, and it displays a ruggedness and solidity like a premium printer should. If this LJ Pro 4301fdw has the quality of my original LJ, it should last a few decades.
SETUP: The 4301fdw is fully assembled, including the installed standard size toner cartridges. All I had to do is pull off a couple dozen orange tape strips holding everything in place, plug in the power cord and load in some paper. Done.
I connected to my Wi-Fi after selecting my language and following the sequence of prompts. The HP offered me the networks it found around me, directing me to select one and enter the network password. Done.
I then found the printer using my photo App on my iPhone12 and printed out a few photos. Next, I opened up iMac PowerBook M1 and found the HP in my system printer list. After adding it, I found a project spreadsheet and printed it. Double-sided was easy to enable, and both sides were printed. Following that easy success, I moved on to Photos, changed the paper type to glossy photo, and printed some color photos. Easily done. The paper tray looks like it will handle a half-ream of paper,
Changes to the printer parameters (paper type, size, surface, double sided) are all accomplished by the large, colorful LED menu screen that folds for convenient viewing. I also found I could sign into the printers web IP address for a more complete set of functions and to check toner levels. (Signing in requires the PIN number which is hidden under the front facing toner cartridge door.)
With little effort, the HP printer was easily found on the network by any other computer or phone. There are ethernet, phone, and USB inputs/outputs on a back right panel. Other than testing the phone for a fax test, the other ports aren’t necessary yet, but they’re available. It’s the perfect printer in a small office setting. It will become the printing center, copying device, and fax machine. Scanning is also easy to accomplish after you download the HP Smart App and create an account. Everything works directly from my standard Apps such as Photo, Numbers, Photoshop Elements.
Testing the auto-feed reinforced my perception that this iteration of LG’s premium Laser printer is high performance and built to precision tolerances. Reliable and smooth paper movement. I couldn’t determine the maximum number of pages, but I’m sure it’s not a large number.
PERFORMANCE: This is a very quiet printer. This is a very fast printer, spitting out full color, full sized pages at BEST quality in mere seconds. The quality of photo printout far exceeds that of my previous laser printers. Generally, photo print-outs from laser printers don’t approach the color fidelity or contrast of an ink-jet printer. Laser printers are known for their speed, high volume usage, economy, and text printing quality. This HP LaserJet 4301 breaks the expectations and adds excellent color printing to its repertoire. Print paper quality makes a significant difference in print quality, so gloss paper makes photos looks their best.
CONCERNS (potential): HP insists that only their toner cartridges can be used in HP printers. Whatever I may think about ink-jet refills, Laser Jets are more expensive and probably more exacting. For Laser printers, with a technology that relies on some level of compatibility and predictability between toner colors interacting with each other and the printer’s heating elements, I’m OK with the restrictions. That said, toner replacement is expensive, and for high volume users, you should make a point to purchase the “x”, high output, cartridges. They represent a significant savings, providing more than 3x the printing volume for less than 2x the price.
SUMMARY: This is an exceptional LaserJet Color printer that will surprise you with its speed, quality output and range of features. It was the easiest printer to setup I’ve ever had. I was printing high quality output within minutes. Very impressed, HP.

Incomparable Vacuuming Performance
on June 8, 2023

DYSON V11 Cordless (BLUE) Torque Drive
Can an appliance have a personality? If we could attribute a personality to our new Dyson V11 it would likely be “obsessive.” It’s a little too heavy at the top, could benefit from some lights aimed at the floor, and be a bit quieter. But, the obsessive focus on delivering immense suction for a useful cleaning session stands out above all else. The Dyson V11 pulls dirt from our rugs and flooring with irresistible force. It’s accomplishes its primary task without compromise.
SETUP and PARTS: The simple, diagram-mostly instruction pamphlet shows how to assemble the parts into an immediately usable stick vacuum. My wife’s efforts at assembly were rewarded with several surprising bursts of suction because she kept using the trigger handle to manage the assembly. It’s a light trigger and the battery already has a charge. You’ll want to be careful. Mounting the Dyson on a wall is straightforward, AFTER you figure out that the power plug location in the holder is actually under a small door that pops up. Diagrams alone aren’t sufficient Dyson!
The medium-sized DUST BIN and MOTOR ASSEMBLY are one piece. A sliding trigger on the underside of the bin pops open the chamber as you hold it over your trash receptacle. Just don’t forget to pull the wand off, first. It operates smoothly and it’s easy to manage the approx 4lb weight of the head (alone) while emptying it.
When used as an upright stick vac, the WAND is used, sometimes with the TORQUE DRIVE cleaning head and other times with the MINI MOTOR tool. The motor head can be attached (with or without the wand) to the COMBINATION tool which is in part a short crevice tool and part brush which slides forward when needed. And finally there is the longer crevice tool. Separately there is a convenient hanging dock which holds a few accessories and serves as the charging station.
OPERATION: The suggested runtime on the vacuum motor head after a full charge is 65 minutes in ECO; 12 minutes on BOOST; 35 minutes on MEDIUM setting. However, we discovered that there was little possibility of using BOOST while on a carpet. The suction strength was greater than my wife’s pushing strength when on carpet. The Dyson felt glued in place. Well, perhaps an exaggeration but you try it! Dyson could offer a vent on the head for further adjustments, but changing the power solved the problem.
There is no App. Thank you Dyson. It’s unneccesary.
Noise Level: Dyson’s V11 probably ranks a bit noisier than our other premium vacs, but in most settings its noise quality is in the less annoying, lower frequencies. Measured using my uncalibrated iPhone and a noise level App, I obtained the following: Eco Mode: 72dB on carpet, 75dB on wood. Medium Mode: 75db on carpet, 76db on wood. Boost mode: 77dB on carpet, 80dB on wood but noise now moves into higher frequencies, as well.

MINOR CONS: There is No lighting on the head. We’d like some illumination for those under furniture times. There is No “lock” feature on the trigger, although it has a very light touch. We’re not sure how much of an issue that might be over time. You feel the weight when you have to manipulate the head to get under things or lift over a high carpet transition. The Dyson moves so easily during the majority of vacuuming activities, it’s not a big concern. Noise level is a bit high, especially as suction force is increased, but the tone is mostly middle frequencies which is not annoying.
SUMMARY: The Dyson V11 doesn’t have gimmicky features or subtle operation in its advertising. Dyson, instead, highlights its power, performance and engineering. That’s honest. This is a vacuum that does not compromise on suctioning performance. There are likely few true competitors when vacuuming capability is the comparison criteria. This will be our go-to for serious cleanup.

What do you want in your ultimate router? This.
on June 7, 2023
Posted by: TECHBEENGOOD
TP-Link Deco BE85 (BE22000) tri-band WiFi 7 mesh router.
This newest router has huge potential but you will be looking for upgraded network devices to take advantage of all this speed. I never thought my switches and cable would be the slow components in my network! I had been very impressed with my most recent mesh router from another brand. But, you know, where speed and reliability is the goal, and media quality comes with huge bandwidth demands, you can always use more capability. So, it was with both anticipation and some angst that I took down my nice mesh system and set up this TP-Link Deco BE85 (BE22000). How complicated will this be? How much improvement?
Wow. No need to fear. The TP-Link appears to deliver on every promise. Crazy fast. Ridiculously easy to set up. And as I’ve seen with every leap forward, software and firmware upgrades mean I can expect ongoing improvements.
SETUP: Turn off my existing routers and disconnect. Unplug my previous router from the ISP’s Point-of-Entry. Swap the first Deco mode into the same position. True everything on and follow the instructions on the TP-Link Deco App. Make a new account. Create a network name with password. Add other nodes by simply plugging them in. Done. Everything works. Didn’t take 30 minutes.
FEATURES: I lack the technical expertise to know the full implications of all of the capabilities of this TP-Link Mesh system and I lack the imagination to recognize where this Deco BE85 falls short. Every imaginable expectation I might have for a router, such as maximizing the speed of my Gig fiber from Point of Entry to anywhere I’m my house, providing the flexibility to exploit my several ethernet drops, and giving me control over my network are provided. If you need a feature, I’d bet it’s here. BB’s product listing provides the details.
RESULTS: I’m offering tests of my current system. PLEASE, do not assume your speeds can be predicted by my tests. This mesh router system is being limited by my equipment and measuring devices. I can compare relative to my previous setup, but you shouldn’t. (See Router SPEEDTEST “BEST” table in accompanying pictures); Using my iPhone 12 and my MacBook Pro M1 I wandered around my home looking for the Wi-Fi connection speeds I could achieve. I set aside some time before the arrival of my new DECO BE85 to thoroughly test my previous mesh system. I recorded the best speed I could achieve at 5 locations representing distant areas of my house. I maintain my Service provider’s single location (my Office) WiFi network so I’ve set up my add-on mesh systems in Bridge (or Access Point) mode. I tested its performance also. And, finally, when my DECO arrived it had to compete with the other systems. Summary data is shown in my table.
It’s not much of a competition. Everywhere other than my office location, the TP-DECO more than doubled the download speeds of both other WiFi systems. There were 2 upload speed anomalies which I can’t explain but were repeatable. They may be unique to my setup, or maybe settings I’ve created incorrectly, or possibly a correctable issue that a future update might resolve. I can’t get too stressed about it because every other performance measure was excellent, crushing my previous setups. And, to repeat, my measurements are limited by my equipment and measuring tools.
I can measure only measure WiFi 6 performance using my newest Dell laptop. DEVICES that can exploit WiFi 6 are being released every day. They include Samsung’s Galaxy Fold, Note 10, Note 20, S10, S20, S21, S22, S22 Ultra, S23, Tab S8, Sony’s Xperia, Apple M1MacBook Air, M1MacBook Pro, Mac Mini, iPad Pro, Asus Chromebook Flip c436, Dell XPS 12, HP Spectre x360, Lenovo Yoga, LG Gram17, Microsoft Surface Laptop Go, Google Pixel 6, 6 pro, 6A, 7, 7 Pro, Motorola Edge 30, 30 Ultra, Pro, Fusion, 2021, 2022, Moto Razor 2022, Motorola X30 Pro and Apple’s iPhone 15 is expected to ship with Wi-Fi 6E plus more.
DEVICES that can support WiFi 7 will probably not arrive in significant numbers for another couple of years. When they do, the speeds could reach 30Gps, the connection capacity will allow for many more simultaneous devices online, and they will provide greater stability.
SUMMARY: This TP-Link Deco BE85 achieves the highest Wi-Fi speeds my house as ever seen, and it’s rock-steady reliable. It has a significant amount of flexibility, It is fun to manage. I’m obsessed with testing it under a variety of usage situations, and it has not failed any expectation I might have. With these emerging technologies there is a need for persistent updating and curing of issues as they arise. New devices and modifications to current wireless protocols will challenge even a cutting edge product like the Deco BE85. It’s readily apparent that TP-Link takes this obligation seriously, so I think I can expect continuous improvements. Looking forward to using this premiere router for a long time.

Great multipurpose computer and owner experience.
on June 1, 2023
Posted by: TECHBEENGOOD
Dell Inspiron 14”, 2in1 Touch Laptop, AMD Ryzen 5 7530U, 8Gb, 512GbSSD
This multipurpose Dell 2in1 computer is heading to college with our granddaughter. It’s a great mix of features, comfortable weight and feel, with a distinctive color to make this a great choice for her college years. It performs especially well, enabling users to discover various ways to use this technology tool.
SETUP: Dell’s simplified, assisted setup of Windows 11 makes getting underway a breeze. We were up and running applications in minutes. For a student accustomed to a Mac, a Chromebook and now a Windows PC, having a responsive keyboard, an intuitive touchpad, as well as a screen that you only have to reach over and select, or drag or tap makes everything much easier to use.
PERFORMANCE: I was testing out a new TP-Link ultra high speed router and discovered that the new Dell can take advantage of the fastest (currently Wi-Fi 6E, MU-MIMO) Wi-Fi networking protocols. Within minutes of connecting, I was uploading and downloading at 640Mbps/942Mbps speeds on our fiber-based internet. So, there is no doubt that wireless ior direct connectivity will not be an obstacle.
As mentioned in SETUP, interacting with the keyboard, touchpad and screen touch were all nicely tuned to be highly responsive. The keyboard is backlit. Although it’s not included, Dell has a compatible stylus for artists and designers to use for drawing, sketching and painting. As a student, we expect that the variety of inputs as well as the overall comfort of the various 2-in-1 configurations will be important over hours of use.
As expected, the SSD drive is lighting fast. It also probably contributes to the completely silent operation of the computer. SSD drives demand less power, so the extended use time we noted is a likely benefit we can expect. Power is provided by a 4 Cell, 54 Wh, integrated battery that reaches fairly full (80%) charge in 60 minutes with the Type-C power adapter.
Built into the keyboard top is a nice sounding pair of speakers which are able to provide a decent sound to accompany videos or games or just music from our playlists. I’ll definitely add earbuds but if this was staying on a desk I’d still add some desktop speakers.
Video conferencing is increasingly important for instruction as well as maintaining contact with family and friends. The 1080p camera combined with the screen’s 1920x1200 resolution and 250 nits display offers up an image that is easy to read and, again, comfortable for the brightest classroom or late night projects. We found entertainment was bright, contrasty and colorful. Text was was easy to read. And, of course, Windows has accessibility aids if we need larger fonts, highlighted text, or the ability to zoom in on details.
SUMMARY: There is a lot to like about this nice looking Dell 2-in-1 laptop. It does so much, with so many different input tools, and manages to get it all done efficiently. It’s fast, fun and looks good. The tablet makes drawing easy, but we’ll be adding a stylus. The good selection of ports allows for expansion, connections and enhancements as needed. Very easy to Recommend.

Large capacity, useful and COLD.
By TECHBEENGOOD from AUSTIN
My experience has been quite good. This was a purely indulgent purchase. We come from a generation when you never want to run out of food or miss an opportunity during store food specials. This LG ends those fears. It simply soaks up frozen and refigerated foods. We love the open cabinet space and various door and specialty spaces.
I've placed calibrated thermometers in multiple locations in the frdge. It took almost 3 days for the temps to settle down, but now they are within a 4 degree range of the settings. (The LG does NOT show the temp, ONLY the settings. You must use your own thermometer.) The door space in my unit is only a couple of degrees higher, and only during periods of use. The drawers are usually colder than the open space of the fridge. My situation may be unique.
The low noise level is especially welcome. We loved our previous Maytag, but this is another level of quiet. We wondered about the extra depth, but the approx. 2" are not an issue for us. Tighter kitchens may present a problem.
I also called customer service with LG during the 1st 48 hours to understand why the fridge was taking so long to reach the settings. There is a language issue. The pleasant person on the phone struggled with anything other than the simplest presentation of facts, had no appreciation for humor, and was fairly quick to over-react to criticism. Her attachment to the script was frustrating. Most importantly, telling a customer that it's perfectly fine and normal for the temp setting to be 37 and the actual temp to be 42 is wrong. She did not understand that the "setting" is NOT the actual temperature. She then fussed around and helped me cycle through the demo/operational settings which may or may not have helped. The temperature did settle in another 24 hours nad has been perfect for weeks. Customer service needs some work..
I should also add that this purchase was originally made at another long-time national retailer who utterly failed to complete the delivery due to incompetence. Best Buy/Pacific handled sale and delivery with wonderful professionalism.

Edit of review: about that freezer middle drawer
October 5, 2014
I would probably lower the score by 1/2 star after several months of use. You may feel differently. . . . That cute middle slide drawer in the freezer needs a redesign. It occasionally pops out of its track with very little effort. It does not pop back in quite so easily. We've not yet figured out what we've done wrong but with unusual caution and we can avoid the problem. Busier families with kids will not be so fortunate. It'll be an aggravation.

Google (runs my) Home
By TECHBEENGOOD
Google Home
“Hey, Google . . . play “Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young” and so it was done. Google Home used the Pandora account I just entered, and a rather smooth, well balanced music playback began. It could get loud without harshness out of a cute beer-mug sized device. Without any other command, Pandora was now playing. Seemed like magic to my visitors who were listening in to my conversation with Google Home while I was setting it up.
Set up took less than 10 minutes, but I don’t have many of the partner products (NEST, Philips Hue, SmartThings, IF) that Google Home operates with right out of the box. But Google Home has a nice bag of tricks with which to work. With the right Chromecast enabled speakers, you can apparently get the house rocking relying on Pandora, Spotify, Google Play, Youtube Music, or Tunein to provide the tunes.
Both my wife an I are getting a kick out of challenging Google to provide weather reports, news updates, or filling in our grocery list (using Google Keep). It’ll do a very accurate job of answering trivia questions and has no trouble deciphering our voice commands. It could provide the names of local restaurants and addresses, but couldn’t schedule a table for us. It could list where movies were playing, but not when. Google Home easily picked out our voices over a playing TV and was quick to respond. It wasn’t ready with TV schedules, however . . yet.
For me, the real excitement begins if/when Google operates my Logitech Harmony Theater system hubs, my HomeBrite Devices, or maybe lets us order from some online stores. I have no trouble recommending the Google Home device, but I’m also expecting ti to expand its partner list. These are wonderfully useful gadgets, but they rely on Google to play nicely with a variety of other products that I want to control.

Have you got "multiple" networks? Read.
December 7, 2016
I discovered an aggravation in recent days with my Google Home. if you've set up a roaming or extended network in your home, there is a potential problem. (Others with a simple, single router, network can stop reading.) At some point, typically after moving your Google Home or manually quitting then restarting WiFI, you may discover Google Home can't connect to your network. Huh? You've got it extended everywhere in your house and you have a problem ONLY with Google Home? Seems silly. Well, Google Home wants to see your original setup device (phone/tablet) on the same BRANCH of your network. Anything else creates a crisis. Start over, be sure to find the Google device with your setup App on your phone/tablet, and re-establish the connection. Be patient, it will reconnect.

Roomba, you're hired.
By TECHBEENGOOD from Austin
I WILL volunteer to vacuum. Of course, I haven’t developed my wife’s skills or strategies for coping with our home’s diverse floor landscape. All those transitions to wood, tile, various carpet types and back again, through a forest of chair legs, blind hallways, low hanging sofas, beds and chairs, and scattered debris, most of it mine. I’m a work in progress. Which brings us to this iRobot Roomba 890. Kudos to the teams of skilled designers, engineers, of focus groups who built and tested a robot that so successfully accomplishes that which has confounded me for so many years. My wife, our specialist, will have the final judgment on the Roomba.
Setup requires a minimal amount of planning. The Roomba’s charging station needs to be located where the Roomba can find it, be plugged in and docked. At this point, after a few hours to fully charge, you have a working automated, intelligent vacuum. Hate technology? Don’t need it. Press the CLEAN button (x2) whenever you’re ready to vacuum. For me, it’s as I’m heading out the door. And I love technology, just not vacuuming tech. Most others will want to take advantage of the Roomba’s ability to schedule vacuuming sessions, get notifications, and monitor cleaning cycles from the app. Once it’s on your home Wi-Fi, a connected Roomba will work with Amazon’s Alexa.
I’m not going to detail the Wi-Fi connection process. It’s not that it’s lengthy but it requires your close attention to details. My efforts required some restarts, but then, I’m notorious for trying everything first with minimal scanning of the instructions. Don’t try that with the Roomba. Also, you may be jolted by the “unsecured network message” (on the iPhone), but that only indicates a temporary setup condition while configuring the nearby Roomba. Roomba’s online support provides easy-to-follow help if you get into trouble. Don’t be reluctant to reset or restart, as this solved all my issues.
How does this Roomba 890 work? Navigation is effective, as it deals with obstacles, drops, rises, and transitions without problems. Watching the Roomba negotiate my tangle of wires, sneak under our low sofas (low even for our manual upright), and easily climb over our various throw and area carpets is impressive. In places we were sure it would get stuck, it either solved the predicament or avoided it. The combination of sensors, thoughtfully designed rollers and spinners, and logic makes these Roombas special. Oh, and it is surprisingly quiet. We didn’t have to adjust the TV volume, even as it maneuvered around our chairs. At just shy of 90 minutes it found its way back to the charging dock.
My wife’s evaluation? She’s quite willing to leave our home in the tireless, relentless, fastidious care of our new robotic housecleaner. The iRobot Roomba 890 is pretty competent. I think you know my feelings.

I checked again
August 1, 2017
Well, now you've got me wondering if I was sloppy in my review. So, I ran another test today, several weeks after my initial posting. I set my Roomba off on its task by double-clicking the CLEAN button. Set my stopwatch . . . and . . . you can almost set a clock by my Roomba. On my iPhone I got 1:29:10.25 (89 minutes) of vacuuming. Yes, I have 85% hardwood floors (with several large oriental rugs), tile in the bathrooms, and the remainder in a carpeted bedroom. And I do hear the motor working a bit harder on carpet. Your experience will certainly differ, but I'm confident you'll get well past an hour.

When spills happen, the Braava jet m6 robot is always on call—ready to head to the spot and take them on. Just say to Google Assistant or Alexa, “Have Braava mop in front of the kitchen counter”, and it heads out and gets to work. Always learning your home and your cleaning habits, it can offer customized schedules that work around your life—even suggesting extra cleanings during pollen season. Using Precision Jet Spray, it loosens dirt and sticky messes without spraying furniture, rugs, or walls—all without any effort from you, making your mopping tasks a thing of the past. *(Alexa and all related logos are trademarks of Amazon.com or its affiliates. How do you keep it from going on your carpets from a tile floor?

It appears to sense "tilt' or perhaps some other feature of a carpet, but our m6 never succeeded in climbing onto our carpets, as the thresholds were in the way. When we intentionally placed it on a carpet, it just stopped.

Use the Google Smart Light Starter Kit to control the lights using just your voice. Set up in a snap: just plug in Google Home Mini, screw in the GE C-Life smart light bulb, and download the Google Home app to get started. Then just say "Hey Google" to dim, brighten, turn on and turn off the lights."

Is there a monthly fee added for usage?

NO. Google's Assistant operates using your network and nothing other than any Internet Service is required.

Then just say "Hey Google" to dim, brighten, turn on and turn off the lights."

Can I use this to turn off my lights while I am away from home? Also, do I get the starter kit and then multiple bulbs or do I need to get a box thing for each room? Thanks so much

I tested that myself, today. Just before heading home from an appointment. I opened the Google Home App, found my devices list, and there were my lights. I turned them both on and set two different brightness levels. When we got home, both lights were on, and set to the different brightness levels. It works.

The Google Assistant device nears to be nearby to find the lights for setup. Unless your lights are within the 40 ft range (suggested by Google/GE) I don't think they can be controlled. That said, each Assistant can control a lot of lights, all with unique names (such as, Master 1, Master 2, Master 3, etc.).

It has one VGA and two HDMI inputs for versatile, high-definition connectivity, and its edge-to-edge panel lets you opt for a clean-looking multi-monitor setup. Play video games smoothly thanks to the AMD FreeSync technology of this thin HP micro-edge display.

What vesa mount adapter do I need to mount this display?

I looked for a VESA mount array of screw holes, but there are none to be found. I suggest (and NOT facetiously) you consider automobile strength VELCRO to attach this screen, because it only weighs 7 lbs. It's possible HP has a solution using an accessory of some sort, but I didn't pursue that.

You would have to enroll in one of the PLANS to get notification. A PLAN brings the SimpliSafe response center into the loop. Without any PLAN, you are simply using the system SIREN(s) to scare off the intruder.
