The phrase "Dirty South", meaning Southern hip hop, was coined on this album, appearing as a song title. The album aired social and political issues such as racism, discrimination, geo-politics, and gentrification. Some songs were lighter in tone, such as "Soul Food," about the band's love of home cooked meals. Along with the album Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik by Outkast, this one publicized Atlanta's rap scene. It featured three Billboard Hot 100 singles called "Cell Therapy", "Soul Food", and "Dirty South", the former being the group's highest-charting hit to date when it reached #39.

Green Day made a great album

This track, one of my favorites on the album, sees Jesus of Suburbia, after the novelty of the City wears off, being abandoned by his followers and lamenting about being alone. He says, My shadow's the only one that walks beside me, my shallow heart's the only thing that's beating. Green Day's frontman Billie Joe Armstrong has said, "If Holiday is the party, then this song is the resulting hangover." (Fun fact: the song's music video won the 2005 VMA for Video of the Year.)

Arguably the two greatest living blues guitarists

Every aspect of Riding With the King is as good as expected--the guitar playing is dazzling, King's voice is as warm, robust, and powerful as ever, and even the notoriously soft-voiced Clapton is able to leave his mark. The only thing that keeps this album from earning top marks is what the two artists have already accomplished in their long and impressive careers--while Riding With the King is a technically accomplished and very satisfying blues record, it simply cannot compete with classics like King's Live at the Regal or Clapton's Slowhand. That said, it would be a worthy addition to any blues library, and is an admirable showcase for two brilliant guitarists. And for driving music, there's nothing better than Riding With the King.
