Shhtikk's Reviews

In the years after it took its initial bow on October 2, 1959, CBS's The Twilight Zone (1959-65) evolved into one of the most legendary television programs ever made, and arguably the most enduring anthology series of all time. Executive produced and frequently scripted by creator Rod Serling, Zone offered a unique science fiction playlet every week; for the first three seasons, each episode ran 30 minutes, though the program enjoyed two brief runs of 60-minute episodes - first in 1963, and again in 1965. This box set contains all 36 episodes from the first season of Zone, with such memorable outings as Escape Clause, Perchance to Dream, Third from the Sun, and A Stop at Willoughby.

Must Have for the Twilight Zone fan!

One wouldn't think that there could have been much improvement over the superlative DVD sets that were released a few years ago, but you'd be wrong. Besides an incredibly sharp picture in these HD remasters of the Twilight Zone, there are also improvements in the sound as well. It is still mono, but the clarity and the almost complete absence of tape hiss is amazing here. There are also enormous amounts of extras, some episodes having as many as five supplemental extras such as isolated soundtracks, narrations by both experts and the actors, radio show versions of the stories and even reminisces. If you're debating whether this new release is worth it or not, you will not be disappointed.

The Unique First Season

This first season of Mannix is interesting for several reasons: This season was only shown on TV once, it was never part of the syndication package so for many people this is the first time to see these episodes since 1967. Joe Mannix works for Intertect, a high tech investigation firm that uses computers (check out those huge tape drives and disc drives the size of washing machines!) his boss is played by Joseph Campanella, and we won't see Peggy until the second season, at which time we find out that Joe has gone into business for himself. Some things established in this season will become Mannix trademarks, such as his convertible- In this season its a modified Olds Toronado, customized by none other than George Barris-the same man who designed the Batmobile and the Munsters car.
What's great about it: Current Day interviews with Mike Connors and Joe Campanella
