One of the all-time greats

My Neighbor Totoro was first released in Japanese theaters as a double-feature with the Studio Ghibli film Grave of the Fireflies. It was an odd juxtaposition of a simple, lighthearted children's story with a heart-wrenching, tragic children's story. But what both films had in common were they showed the genius of Studio Ghibli.

There are no exploding spaceships, no smart-alecky talking animals, no slick computer-generated animations in this film. The animation is simple, the story is simple, and the result is timeless. It's a great film to watch if you're a kid, or if you're a grown up who longs to remember what it was like to be a kid again.
