No. You could potentially use it for a presentation (powerpoint, pdf viewer, keynote, etc.), but you would likely have to put your hand under the sensor after a bit of time, just to wake up the mouse, so that you could right or left click to advance the slides. I couldn't tell you how far away you would have to be, but as this is designed to be near the receiver, I would imagine you couldn't get further than 5-10 feet away.
I would recommend a cheap, wireless slide advancer in your case. Otherwise, you would need to spend a bit more money on a slide advancer that also has a mouse function designed into it, whether it is through motion control or a small nub on the face. Those types of slide advancers are designed to work with a greater distance and offer you a little more functionality for presentations.
