A solid disaster film, worth a blind-buy.

This was a solid disaster film in every way, with surprisingly good special effects for something not made in Hollywood. We watched the Asian film Tidal Wave not long ago. It was fun, with very commendable effects too, but excessively unrealistic in far too many ways. It was still enjoyable, but a lot of Tidal Wave was so goofy we wondered if the film was actually a comedy, rather than a disaster epic.
The Wave is pure disaster fiction, based on something that supposedly did, and one day may again, happen. Action junkies who get bored all too easily with any semblance of character development - you know the type, who apparently doesn't think deeply enough to get that it's the emotional connection to characters that heightens our sense of suspense - might get restless in the beginning, despite the gorgeous locale. But the filmmakers drive this one home without any overt silliness or burdening the viewer with the need to unreasonably suspend disbelief. I'm still wondering what happened to the cruise ship from the movies theatrical poster (no ship that size in this film). But, aside from a rather trite resuscitation scene (spoiler: you know where they try to revive someone, give up and then someone frantically starts at it again before the person finally come to - seen that way WAY too many times already for it to be effective), there's little to criticize from my perspective.
The BD includes the original Norwegian language track with optional English subtitles. It also comes with a very nice lenticular slipcover for those who pick it up before the first pressing sells out.

Egyptian Mythology done Hollywood Style

This review is more about giving kudos to Best Buy's Steelbook Edition, than praise for the movie itself or the effort that Summit put into it. As for this retailer exclusive, Best Buy did a great job all around: genuine "Steelbook" case, not the cheaper made Metalpaks that some releases get; an all inclusive release that isn't missing anything from the standard release and even includes the 3D BD; all without charging a premium for the case, which is always a deal breaker for us, unless the film is a particular favorite. BB still needs to work on their packaging, but ours arrived without any dents or broken latches this time.
As for the movie, think Clash/Wrath of the Titans, but based on Egyptian Myth, rather than Greek. Very loosely based, I'm sure. It's a fantasy world, from a time before time, and all that, that's not likely to have too much in common with accredited lore. But, unlike Greek Myth, for people who think there's more to ancient writings than utter fiction and superstitious nonsense, who think that a people who could build the pyramids could hardly be as naïve and unenlightened as some have to believe to explain away their own narrow notions of life, yet then preach that it must have been aliens from another world... For people who don't think science is the answer to everything, Egyptian lore has some curious parallels to written history. While this film presents those in typical Hollywood Blockbuster fashion, with little depth or dignity, it has it's intellectually intriguing moments, and can be just as fun and visually arresting as what we've seen of films from Greek lore in recent years.
But, again, the 5 stars are for BB's exclusive edition, not the film.

80's Style Horror/Comedy Done Well!
on June 10, 2016

Ever since Shaun of the Dead, it seems like there's a new zombie comedy contending for our movie dollars every year. Most are forgettable. Some, just bad horrors that wind up being unintentionally funny. And then a few others that try to mimic that 80s-early 90s vibe, but end up mocking the period instead. Then there've been a few more from overseas that had a strong enough reception in the world market to make it to the US. But, unlike Shaun, they must lose something in the translation, or were graded on a curve, relative the size of their development studios, even though some of the best horror/comedies have come from humble beginnings. Anyway, the zombie comedies we've liked enough to watch twice, I can count on one hand. This would probably fall in our top three favorites of the "zombie" comedy genre with Shaun still at the top and Warm Bodies following. Maybe I was in just the right mood for the film when I saw it, but I think it's a pretty safe bet for fans of the zombie comedy genre or horror comedies in general.

A much better value than the mass release.

This is a much better value than the mass release, due to the higher quality, real metal case, as well as due to the inclusion of a standard dvd, neither of which does the standard release include. Unfortunately, Best Buy used the much cheaper MetalPak brand instead of original Steelbook brand. My copy came with moderate wear (rubbing and scratches) under the shrinkwrap, no doubt due to substandard production quality at the factory. Still better than plastic though, which has amazingly gotten even cheaper and FAR less protective, since the adoption of "eco" cases. Metal also makes the product much more collectible.

can I buy this phone and switch it for my existing phone keeping same contract with Verizon? cost?

We switched from a Verizon contract to prepaid recently. Prepaid and contract are very different. We were told on the phone that we could have kept our existing number if we wanted. But we'd already cancelled the service, so it was too late.

Is the reception good? Does it have a tendency to drop calls?

My present smart phone does drop calls often. My voice mail breaks up most of the time. I am completely dissatisfied with my Samsung Galaxy S4 mini
I've been all over the country and feel confident in saying that Verizon has the best network of any cell service. We get a fairly bad echo in the phone at times though. Not sure if it's related to signal strength or something else. It's my understanding that dropped calls has less to do with the phone than the service. Services that use others networks are the worst for dropped calls, because when a network is full, they tend to kick off the piggy backers to make room for their own customers. We've rarely had dropped calls with Verizon in the past with a contract service. I assume Prepaid will be the same way, but we just recently switched to prepaid, so time will tell.

what is the charge per minute to use this phone & also charges for text messages?

You get 300 minutes per month for $15, so about 5 cent per minute if I did the math right, unless you don't use all 300 minutes of course. We only use about 60 minutes per month, so it basically cost us about 25 cent per minute. Any text message counts as one minute.
