Great Open Box Deal
on February 5, 2017
Posted by: tt42
I purchased the Open Box version of the LG Urbane here on Best Buy. I was a bit concerned about what condition it might arrive in, as I am sure many are when purchasing a used item. The watch arrived in it's original box, and the box was well worn, which of course concerned me even more. Upon opening the box I found the watch to be in pristine condition - It looked as if the previous owner bought it, saw it, and put it right back in. Even the charger was still sealed in its original plastic, unopened. So, I was really pleased that it looked just like a new watch, with zero damage, marks or any sign of being used.
The watch itself is great. At first I thought it looked a bit big, but after wearing it for a few days I got used to the size. It functions seamlessly with my LG V20, and the battery gets me easily though two days. Depending on the day, I usually have anywhere from 65-70% left after a day of moderate use. The battery life got better after all the updates and after a few days of settling in to the watch.
The only negative is all the updates required as a new watch owner. I must have when through at least 8 or 9 updates, each having to done separate. I suggest putting the thing on the charger when you get it in the evening and just having it within arms reach so you can start the updates until they cycle through all of them. It will only update on the charger itself.
I think this is a great deal at the Open Box price, combined with the fact that the Urbane will get the Android Wear 2.0 update (according to LG). I recommend it.

Great case, but pricey
on December 5, 2016
Posted by: tt42
I bought this case only because I was looking for a way to use my $25 gift certificate that I got from Best Buy for the Note 7 fiasco. I can't say that the look of the case was all that attractive online, but now that I have it I can honestly say it looks very modern, which isn't that bad. The case is lightweight but protective, and is comfortable to hold. It provides access to all the ports easily.
I would probably buy this case if it were $20 without the gift certificate, but at $40 I think it is too pricey, especially compared to some of the other cases you can get from Ringke or Spigen which basically do the same thing.

Great phablet phone

If you enjoy a phone size of the Nexus 6p, then you will really like the LG V20. It is basically the same size as the 6p, but feels much better in the hand. It is well balanced and has a great design.
The phone itself is snappy and easy to use. I had no problems setting up the phone. One thing to note if you are coming from Android 6.0 or 6.0.1 on your old phone - The apps don't transfer when using NFC to transfer your information, at least they didn't in my case. I had to go and manually download them again. Maybe this is because they are different versions.
Call quality is great. The bluetooth works great with my vehicle and Bluetooth speakers. The fingerprint sensor works quick. At first it was a bit quirky, but I realized that LG had placed a very small bit of plastic covering over the fingerprint sensor. Once that was removed, I redid my fingerprints and it works great. Be sure to catch that before scanning in your fingerprints.
I like the 2nd screen functions more than I thought I would. I wouldn't say it is ground breaking, but similar to the always on screen functions.
Overall, the benefits of this phone really make a great case for its purchase. Removable battery, expandable memory, 64gb storage, great screen quality, metal chassis. I highly recommend it if you like a phone with a large footprint.

Great phone overall
on September 1, 2016

I upgraded to the Note 7 from the Nexus 6p. I'll give a quick comparison:
Nexus 6p:
Pure Android
No Bloat, quick updates
Dual front facing speakers
Really big phone
Note 7:
S-Pen
Waterproof
Faster processor/more memory
SD card slot
Touchwiz - (I use Nova Launcher so it doesn't really matter to me what launcher the phone uses)
Only one speaker, bottom facing
In my mind, if you are looking to buy either phone, I would go with the Nexus 6p just because it's cheaper and you get a phone that is very close to this experience. The Note 7 is a bit smaller, has the S-pen, is sleek, and is the latest thing. I enjoy new tech so I decided to go with it, but I will miss the Nexus for it's novelty and value.
Samsung really has some advanced features designed into the phone, and I love the S-Voice and it's accuracy, as well as some of the smaller features built in that are cool. Fingerprint reader is very accurate and fast. Have not tried the iris scanner.
The curved edges of the phone do take some getting used to, but the only time I really notice is when I am dragging something near the edge and my finger dives down a bit with the screen. My eyes have gotten used to looking at images on the screen and I now see it as normal. As far as the aesthetics go, nothing beats the curved look, but functionally it isn't essential.
Overall this is a well designed premium phone. There are plenty of great phones out there, so if you are looking for value and performance then look elsewhere.
Review of BB shipping:
The worst part of this experience - Best Buy shipping. They promised the phone on Aug. 19th with the preorder, then it got delayed and shipped on the 19th. They shipped it via ground, so it took another week. The box was smashed up good when it arrived, but luckily the phone was ok. I personally think Best Buy should ship phones 2-day because they take less of a beating than in ground shipping (especially when they are late shipping it), but my cries went unheard with BB. The truly are great at ignoring customer emails...took 3 tries to even get a response.

A disappointment.
By Mack
We primarily use the tv for watching movies, and the detail is disturbing on any film over 2 years old. There is such distortion and you can almost see the actors in front of the green screen. Movies seem so fake now, and I don't just mean action ones. I am going to return the product.

I've seen this in Samsung's as well. I think it has to do with the wider color gamut introduced on these TV's. Try movie mode for more realistic colors on the Samsung. I realized you already returned it, but if anyone else is considering this TV then they can try the same.

Unique model for Best Buy
By xJohnWinstonx
Hello All!
1st topic -
Question: Why can't I find this TV anywhere else?
Answer: This TV is an exclusive to Best Buy, which is not uncommon in the TV industry. Places like Costco also commission Samsung and others to make them one-off models using different parts or panels to make an exclusive product.
2nd Topic -
Question: How is this TV different from other Samsung (specifically SUHD) models?
Answer: Samsung, for this particular model, worked with a Chinese Manufacturer named AU Optronics to make the panels.
Why does this matter?: Well, that's a loaded question, but the short answer is that in order to get the total price down for Costco, Best Buy, Sams club etc etc, they use a lower grade image panel from AU as opposed to their "A++" Grade panels that Samsung makes in South Korea for their 8500/9000/9500 series sets. The grades of Panels range from A++ down to C. AU panels are typically B/C panels which means they are prone to "hot spotting" and light bleed on the panel backlight. Light bleed and hot spotting are when you can see with your eyes white light leaking from the edges of the screen and from directly behind the screen, especially when you step off center, which makes the contrast level and color accuracy worse than the A grade panels. It makes black look blue/gray, makes red look pinkish.
So, again, why does this matter?: Well it matters because you will be sacrificing image quality as compared to a true Samsung Panel in the 8500 series and higher SUHD models just to hit a lower price point. You would be better off buying a UN55JS8500 over this model to maintain the best possible picture and quality of life span overall.
3rd Topic -
Question: How do I know what panels are from Samsung, and what Panels are NOT from Samsung?
Answer: It varies. If a model is offered nationally at ALL retailers its a safe bet that the panel is made by Samsung. If the model you are looking at is NOT found outside of the store, it's a safe bet that it's a 3rd party quality panel made for them to meet a price point. The other way to tell would be to look at the back side of the panel and find the label with the model details. If the "VERSION NO." starts with "TH" or "TS" it's a Samsung panel! If it starts with anything else, it's NOT a Samsung panel!
Now in closing, this does not mean that the TV is bad, but it DOES mean that their is a quality sacrifice over a true Samsung panel. And because that can vary based upon the grade of panel selected, they can look different from one to the next within the same series.
Regards,
Very informed consumer

So you know, the costco 850D is the same model as the JS8500, and I can confirm that they use the TH01 samsung panels, as I saw it on the label at the store.

Not good for Directv / Cable
By sonytheoneandonly from LA
98% of my TV show watching is on cable/satellite, not on online streaming. My TV shows on travel channel, espn, HBO, are blurry on this 4k. I put it side by side with my 5 year old 1080p and the 1080p wins by a huge margin.
I found out after I bought this 4k, that most TV shows and sports are 720p and when upscaled to 4k, the conversion makes it worse. I'm not sure if these TV shows plans to show it on 4k in the future. I doubt it.
And directv told me that they do not support this model where they have some 4k content. Their website lists out the brands they support.
I might have to return this to get a new 1080p OLED instead.

I think most people don't understand that their cable TV shows will most likely look worse on this TV than a 1080p TV, because of the stretching that has to occur for those signals to fit on a 4k screen. This already occurs on a 1080p screen, just not to the same degree. Now, if you are going to watch only 1080p and 4k signals, then yes, this TV will do nicely, but I don't think that fits all consumers.

If you are used to plasma
By Matt
This is complete garbage. Just got it delivered, turned on hbo on this new set and my plasma. Was scared to buy LED because when I am at other peoples' houses the picture looks fake compared to mine but models in the store looked really good. This is completely fake looking, watching the same movie on my plasma and it is great on there. If you are used to plasma this looks fake and stupid, DO NOT BUY. I will be returning but am really at a loss for what to get at this point.

Turn off the Auto Motion Plus and you will get rid of the Soap Opera effect that I think you are describing. Also, try setting the Picture Mode to "Movie", then adjusting your set from there. I've owned plasma's as well and I can tell you that this set can look great with the right settings.
You also try using the "LED Clear Motion" setting under custom on the Auto Motion Plus, while setting the Blur and Judder Reduction to zero. This will add flicker to the screen, much like a plasma, and clear the blur that comes with an unaltered LCD screen picture. It also reduces the brightness, but this is a really bright TV, and plasmas generally are more dim, which I think is what you may like as well.
Hope this helps, if not you then others experiencing the same.

It's respectable, would have gotten the next size up on a do over, the picture quality on some broadcast tv shows remind me of a daytime soap opera. Only real problem I have with it is that the mounting screws were too short to connect into the bracket.

It's ok but

It's ok but the hd has lag in between channels and tried to solve but Samsung has no answer
Customer Avatar
tt42
March 15, 2016
I don't know if I completely understand your issue, but if by lag you mean the channels take more time to change, then the answer is simple. This is caused by switching resolutions (720p to 1080i), and the TV takes a moment to process that change. All TV's do this. You can set some DVR's/Set top boxes to only feed one resolution, which will result in quicker channel changing, but at the cost of some clarity of picture. It is best to allow your set top box to feed the original signal to the TV for upscaling, so that it only gets processed once. It is your choice, of course, so if you value quick channel changing, then go ahead and find out if your set top box can feed only one resolution to the TV.

Also, the phone comes with Android 7.0, not 7.1 as listed in the description on Best buy. I'm sure it will be updated to 7.1 at some point, but it is not shipped with it.
My Verizon variant already had a small update pushed out to the phone, which I applied. Can't say I noticed anything different, but it was supposed to add some performance enhancements and security updates.

Just thought I would offer an update to my review after using the phone for several weeks now. Battery life has been great. I haven't experienced any draining of the battery by apps or other phone processes that has happened to me on other android phones. I get through a full day with ease, but even if I do play a bunch of games or watch a video and need a charge, it charges incredibly quickly.
Camera quality is great. I've enjoyed using the camera, but mainly use the auto mode and haven't explored the manual mode as of yet. I know that is a big feature of the phone but I just don't get into that kind of stuff like others may do.
One of favorite features of the phone is the ability to turn off the soft buttons in whatever app you choose. There is a menu in the settings that allows you to turn off the soft buttons in any app, which is helpful for games or readers that don't need a back or home button. The buttons are easily called back up with a swipe up from the bottom of the screen, which is easy enough.
The recording functions on the phone are amazing. It really records crystal clear audio, better than my dedicated Roland MP3 recorder that I bought for such purposes, and with a much nicer interface.
I've had no issues with bluetooth functions such as car audio sync or audio playback. Works as well as my other phones have.
Really happy with the phone. Finally got one that feels like a nice replacement for the 6p and the Note 7 (Went from 6p to Note 7, then to S7 temporarily, then this). I like phones with a larger screen, and really like LG phones (had the G4 in 2015 which I enjoyed as well). The online reviewers don't seem to be as enthusiastic about this phone, but to each their own, as I think it hits all the things I was looking for.

What is the cost difference at the end of the two years if you pay cash for the phone or do the monthly pymts? Are there other charges for each type that we show know about? I've only had Apple iPhones; do you offer a class on how to use this new phone?

I believe contract phones have more expensive plans in order to make up for selling the phone cheaper - Monthly payment phones have cheaper plans but tack on the charge for the phone. I don't the exact cost differences, but I'm sure they will get their money in either case. I would call and ask Verizon.

Is the 2 yr plan for $349.99 available for existing customers or only new customers?

You should call your cell provider and ensure additional charges won't be added to your plan. Existing customers can take advantage of it but it may change how much you pay a month. If you are already on a contract, then it shouldn't change your monthly fees, only extend your contract. However, I would call and ask anyway, to be sure.
