Karel Reisz' biopic of country singing legend Patsy Cline comes to DVD with a standard full-frame 1.33:1 image. The English soundtrack is rendered in Dolby Digital Surround. English, Spanish, and French subtitles are accessible. Extra features include cast biographies and the original theatrical trailer. Sadly, it appears that little thought or care went into this DVD. One would be right to hope for footage of the real Patsy Cline in the supplemental materials. On the plus side, the strong leading performances by Jessica Lange and Ed Harris do not suffer when transferred to the small screen.
Robert Mulligan directs Alan Alda and Ellen Burstyn in the big-screen adaptation of the romantic comedy Same Time, Next Year. The film makes its debut on DVD with a widescreen anamorphic transfer that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.85:1. While not exactly breathtaking, the image will be a welcome surprise for those who have only experiences the film on television. The English soundtrack is rendered in Dolby Digital Mono. Spanish and French subtitles are accessible. There are no supplemental materials of any consequence, but this is a fine release of an enjoyable film offered at a reasonable price.
This three-pack contains the first three films in the Tom Cruise starring action series Mission Impossible, in which Cruise plays Ethan Hunt, a super spy who tackles seemingly impossible missions. The movies were directed by Brian De Palma, John Woo, and J.J. Abrams.
