This set contains every episode from the sixth season of The Middle, a sitcom about a wacky middle-class family trying to survive the perils of everyday life. The program stars Patricia Heaton and Neil Flynn as the loving parents of idiosyncratic progeny.
The fifth season of this family sitcom finds Axl (Charlie McDermott) leaving the nest and entering college, but it's not a smooth transition: Frankie (Patricia Heaton) gets mad when Axl stays in touch with Mike (Neil Flynn) but not her; Axl bunks at home when he has problems with his roommate; and failing grades lead Axl to turn to Brick (Atticus Shaffer) for academic help. However, Sue (Eden Sher) makes the volleyball team and experiences a new sense of freedom without Axl at home. On the flip side, Frankie loses her freedom when she gets arrested for having an overdue library book. Meanwhile, Mike gets an award for his 20 years of service at the quarry, but he's reluctant to attend the awards dinner, and he also dreads having to take a forced vacation from work. Later, the whole gang go on a family vacation to Disney World, and it wouldn't be a Heck outing without a series of mishaps.
David Fincher's controversial Fight Club has had a few incarnations on DVD. This release offers a widescreen anamorphic transfer that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 2.35:1. A closed-captioned English soundtrack is rendered in Dolby Digital 5.1, while a French soundtrack has been recorded in Dolby Digital Surround. English and Spanish subtitles are accessible. Supplemental materials include four different commentary tracks. David Fincher performs one of the tracks solo. He is joined by actors Brad Pitt, Edward Norton, and Helena Bonham Carter on another track. The screenwriter Jim Uhls can be heard with the author of the original novel, Chuck Palahniuk. Lastly, a technical commentary track consists of many of the people who worked behind the camera. This is a great disc from 20th Century Fox.

While You Were Sleeping unfortunately suggests what Hollywood Pictures was doing when its home video department released this DVD. With no extras on it beyond the original theatrical trailer, the Sandra Bullock romantic comedy is the only component of the disc. At least the film is available in its 1:85 widescreen and the transfer is well done. The audio is Dolby Surround, but it's neither digitally encoded nor 5:1. Such a commercially successful film warranted production notes or perhaps commentary by director Jon Turteltaub. Unfortunately, the DVD was released below the radar of the studio and even Sandra Bullock fans. The film has a French language track and a Spanish subtitle option.
Sometimes, the DVD format can take a must-watch movie and turn it into a must-own movie. Warner Bros. gets a gold star for this excellent DVD edition of David O. Russell's Gulf War heist epic. The picture, a masterful 2.35:1 widescreen transfer, beautifully shows off the desert surroundings. Colors are rich and seem to shimmer with the heat. Even when the film changes stocks, the picture retains its crisp texture. The sound is simply awesome. Dolby 5.1 does the madcap gunplay and thunderous soundtrack justice. The extras too are worth their weight in gold. Russell's commentary, for starters, is top of the line. He details every inch of the production, from effects to locations and more. He is also well-schooled in the Gulf War and provides many fascinating historical notes. Also featured is a fact-filled commentary from producers Charles Roven and Edward McDonnell. There is a 20-minute documentary that offers a very straightforward look at the making of Three Kings. Production designer Catherine Hardwicke takes viewers on an exhaustive tour of the film's various sets, while cinematographer Newton Thomas Seigel provides a look at the process by which the film was shot. There is also a batch of deleted scenes with optional commentary from Russell, as well as a humorous clip of co-star Ice Cube explaining the "acting process." While all of these are impressive, the real standout is Russell's video journal. Starting from the day the script is greenlit, it chronicles the journey of bringing Three Kings to the screen. We see his first meeting with George Clooney, watch rehearsals, and view the actual shooting. From Mark Wahlberg's obvious discomfort with being videotaped to a rather pushy publicist telling Russell (obviously not knowing who he is), "Sir, no cameras are allowed!" at the film's premiere, the journal is an amazingly personal look at the creation and execution of a feature film. Also featured are bios, trailers, and 12 Easter eggs, called "hidden bunkers" here. After buying Three Kings on DVD, viewers may want to block out four hours of an evening -- two for the movie and the rest to pore over the fabulous extras.
Class reunions can be a nightmare for some of us, but when Romy and Michelle stunningly re-invent themselves for their ten-year reunion, the results are sure to be hilarious in this fun release from Walt Disney Video. Presented in widescreen 1.85:1 and featuring a closed-captioned English Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack, this release also offers an additional French Dolby Digital Surround track. Extra features include a production featurette and a theatrical trailer.
