I found "New" to be a very refreshing album from Sir Paul! I have been very pleased with his solo output since "Flowers in the Dirt" but this album charters some unfamiliar territory and takes some big chances not unlike his "Electric Arguments" album back in 2008! Again, the album sounds familiar but doesn't! We know the ballads are pure Sir Paul but some of the other gems including: "Quenelle Eye", Alligator, I Can Bet, and my personal favorite "Appreciate" could have been released by a number of younger artists today. It's a fun album and get to listen with good quality headphones. "Early Days" is another personal favorite and could have been on the "White Album." A very moving song that points some fingers at the 100s of authors over the years that think they know what happened... The bonus songs are phenomenal! "Struggle" should have been on the original album along with "Demons Dance." Well worth it for Purists and Collectors!
I always found V&M a little bit better than "Band on the Run" for some reason. I know many will disagree but this is my review! I found it to be a lot more cohesive and balanced musically. The closest Paul had done to a concept since "Pepper." Every song on here is strong and again as you'll read in my review of "Speed of Sound" his output during this decade is simply amazing! What artist today can release an album a year of hits?
This is another great package for collectors, purists or someone who just wants to hear some great 70s music! Sir Paul put this together only a year since the magnificent Venus & Mars album, and only 30 months since the critically aclaimed Band on the Run... oh, and he was launching a worldwide tour... A very democratic record for the band where all members got to do a vocal! I find it an upbeat and positive sound, it takes me back to my first year at college in Massachusetts. "Let 'Em In", "Silly Love Songs", and "Beware My Love" are supreme pop at its best! I got to see Paul play most of this album on the WOA Tour in Boston 1976. I got to see him play "Let 'Em In" at a soundcheck in Washington DC in 2012 and it still rocks! The ballads on this album are pure McCartney and reminiscent of the White Album Period. The lightest track on the album was likely "She's My Baby" but again, I love the songs that Paul does what some critics call fillers and this is a great example. What man would not want to sing a song like this to their loved one! Denny Lain's "Time to Hide" was a killer track as well. This song sounded great on their tour! The package comes with a lot of extras so I would check it out!
