I bought this to use with a cheap at Targus USB 2 card reader and it works well. Photos recognized it and pulled pics and vids off without issue.
Note that you can’t use card readers that pull a lot of power and the USB 3 reader I tried didn’t work either. Apple limits the amount of power that a usb device can pull. So some testing is in order to find a combo that works. Fancy, expensive and super fast readers likely won’t work. But a cheap Targus reader I got for $10 at Walmart works great.

You can get lighter and more compact, but trade off cost and stability. I think this pod is a good blend. I got it on sale and took advantage of a buy 3 camera accessories and get one at 25% off to really save on this. It seems stable and folds well. Time will tell how easy it is to use in the field as I just got it and haven’t really been able to use it.

It's basically the smart cover, just in leather. So if that is worth the premium to you, I'd say go for it.
I bought an open box and it works well. Light, and well designed. The only quibble is that the section connecting the magnetic hinge to the cover is a little long, so the cover skews a lot more than previous smart covers I've had when folded back.

I've owned 3 previous iterations of the iPad, and each was better than the last in one way or another. The new 10.5" pro is better in every way. It's lighter (than my 3rd gen retina), faster, better screen, ... so on and so forth.
If you have an older one and are looking for an upgrade, I recommend that 10.5". To me, the 12" is too big and bulky. the 10.5" is slight enough to be held in one hand, but big enough to be able to draw, right and edit on with ease.
