the internal compass is VERY poorly designed

Verified Purchase:Yes
I'm an optical engineer. Before purchase I noted reviews on the internet complaining that the internal compass display is not in focus although the object being viewed is crystal clear. I conducted tests in my lab. I spoke with Barska technical support and they confirmed my findings. The problem is limited "depth of field " focus on the compass card which is gimbaled and floats in oil. When the binoculars are aimed 20 degrees above horizontal the gimbaled card remains level and the display is in focus. When aimed horizontal the display is visible but very fuzzy out of focus. When aimed 20 degrees below horizontal the display is far out of focus and is not readable. Night time use with the red LED illumination is even worse. The same focus problem exists but the incorrect position of the LED causes a reflection off the shiny front surface of the compass card which COMPLETELY washes out the display. Barska tech support confirmed these design flaws. The gun sight type reticle for measuring distance is not illuminated so is useless at night. The accuracy of the compass with respect to magnetic North is VERY good, within +- 2.0 degrees of local magnetic north. Barska sells a digital display version of the same compass binoculars which SHOULD be free of these optical defects.
What's great about it: very clear binocular optics; good frame and body
What's not so great: junky compass....see below
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.
