Took away one star due to lag. Every time you press a button on the virtual remote, there is noticeable and significant delay, and the stream actual freezes, not sure why. Video streams great, but controls are kind of clunky. I use the IR cable, due to device location, not sure if that introduces the lag. Other than waiting for the device to respond after remote commands, it works great.

can i hook up my daughters TV 20 mile away to receive my cable
If your daughters TV is a smartTV and the SlingPlayer app is available on it. You could get her a Roku or another streaming box that has the SlingPlayer app available. Also, this would require both of you to watch the same channel if you both were using the cablebox at the same time.

Really ignorant to tech stuff. I want to record shows and play them later on the same tv at home, like I used to do with my old vcr. I don't want to order this through Directv for a monthly fee if I can do it myself. Any help is appreciated!

Can I use the roku box instead of the m2?
Two different types of boxes. If your thinking of a SlingTV subscription, you need a Roku or another streaming "App" box. If you want to remotely watch TV from a Cable/SAT set top box you need a Slingbox. You can download the Sling Player app on a Roku, but thats only if you have a Slingbox to stream another Cable/SAT box from.
I'd recommend doing some research, not the same type of boxes.

CD port? Just use an external usb cd/dvd drive. Most programs can just be downloaded and installed.
