SPACE-TIME CONTINUUM VS. SURVIVAL INSTINCT
on April 10, 2015

First off, this is a science fiction movie not, as some movie reviewers suggest, a family drama or a love story. Second, unlike most other sci-fi movies, this movie centers on one character played by Matthew McConaughey. Third, hopefully it will bring new interest to the famous Welsh poet, Dylan Thomas, who was popular when I attended college (1950's?). All aspects of this movie is superior to what is usually found in the sci-fi genre. The movie is epic in scope. But make sure to have a quantum physics book near your viewing area for when McConaughey begins creating a multi-dimensional riff in the middle of a black hole.

Stanley Kubrick's adaptation of Stephen King's The Shining comes to DVD with a standard full-frame transfer that, while not widescreen, does in fact mirror the director's original intentions for the film (he reportedly shot it so that the frame could be cropped without compromising the integrity of the image). English and French soundtracks are rendered in Dolby Digital 5.1. English, Spanish, and French subtitles are accessible. Supplemental materials include a making-of documentary and a theatrical trailer.

Caretaker Needed At The OVERLOOK HOTEL

I remember seeing this movie soon after it was completed in 1980. Looking back at the film, it's my opinion that it's the best ever movie adaption of a Stephen King novel. As I remember, the adaption was a problem with many King fans when the movie was released due to the changes made to the novel by director Stanley Kubrick. All the acting is excellent, but the movie belongs to Jack Nicholson. Disk contains a trailer for the film and a 35 minute behind-the-scenes documentary on the making of the Shining which shows how various scenes were set up..

Worth Investing Your Time On WALL STREET

This is a classically-styled film. It's been done before, done since, but not often done better. After Platoon, Oliver Stone decided that, post-Oscar, he would immediately jump into another film. This film was Wall-Street (1987) co-written and directed by Stone featuring Michael Douglas making a leap from the small screen to his first solid movie role and winning a Best Acting Oscar in the process. Also featured is Martin and Charlie Sheen. Things on the DVD that are not listed on the Double Feature box: Documentary featuring Stone, Douglas, and the two Sheens. This is an excellent 45 minute examination of the movie. Also a Commentary by Oliver Stone and two movie trailers. Disk two, Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps (2010), also comes with a Commentary by Oliver Stone and a short entitled "Gordon Gekko Is Back." It's purely a commercial endeavor also directed by Oliver Stone and staring Michael Douglas with an uncredited appearance by Charlie Sheen.

Another Classic From Woody Allen

Blue Jasmine made me think of Tennessee William's "A Street Car Named Desire" lifted from the South and dropped down in New York. I have been a long-time fan of Cate Blanchett who won a Best Actress Oscar for this film. In this movie she is forced to tear away pretenses and end up mumbling on a New York park bench. This is a story about loss of money, glamour, and illusions resulting in a detailed analysis of a life being torn apart. Looking like a play while being written by Woody Allen, this is a drama centering on one character receiving a severe beating by life. Definitely appealed to the serious side of me but also is not for everyone.

Not Original Enough For A Real Horror Fan

This movie is stuck in the "house possessed by unknown entities" genre. One good levitation scene near the end of the movie. Otherwise, gore hounds have seen it all before. Vera Farmiga is excellent in a leading role. Otherwise, the rest of the cast coasts along. Also, I thought Director James Wan's original Saw movie was far more compelling than The Conjuring.
