First published in 1968 to an overwhelming degree of global attention, Erich von Daniken's volume Chariots of the Gods presented an extreme and chilling hypothesis. von Daniken spent the book systematically detailing evidence around the world which may suggest that extraterrestrial life forms visited ancient civilizations. Examples are manifold, but include the remnants of landing strips in Peru, cave etchings of bizarre creatures, and Indian texts that refer to "flying machines of the gods."
