Stop motion animation is the process of taking still shots of physical models or rigs and moving them slightly between photos to produce animations that are similar to a flip book. That said, is is less about software and more about having the materials to create props, scenery and heaps of patience because it's a slow process. Any editing software package should allow you to import still photos and string them together to create animations however.
If you are interested in computer generated animation than I would recommend trying Blender for 3d animation since it's free and quite powerful. If you are able to grasp Blender and want to move on to something more professional than I would suggest Autodesk Maya or Cinema 4d. Along with those programs Photoshop (creating and editing textures. GIMP can also be used and is entirely free), Adobe After Effects (useful for post production effects) and some sort of editing software will be necessary to make complete films. For 2d animation I would recommend trying to learn Adobe Flash.
