The dots work exactly the same as our more expensive Echo. The sound quality is very good but that is the only advantage the Echo has over the Dots. For the money the dots are the way to go.

It's probably not fair that I'm comparing these to a pair of entry level rock speakers the prior owner of our home left. These are outstanding. The ability to run them in stereo as an individual speaker is nice option. I'm using 2 in a space that doesn't require that setup but the flexibility is nice. Mids and highs sound great.

Fantastic audio quality and design

I had very high expectations for the speakers performance and they were all met. The app makes the initial setup very easy (naming the device and connecting it to your home wifi network. My only issue is that the lightning adapter on top only charges the device. It doesn't allow you to play audio. You still have to use Apple AirPlay. I've had a couple examples where my connection was lost or a song stopped because it lost connectivity due to my current speaker placement where it's only got a moderately strong network connection. There is a line-in input on the rear but it can't be used while charging the iPhone 5 on top due to the headphone jack being located on the bottom of the phone. Seems like a poor design choice and something I didn't even consider when purchasing. Not enough to make me return it but something to be aware of.
