Great scanner except for print function
on February 4, 2021

from Hi Desert, CA
Opening the Epson RR60 I found the unit, cleaning and calibration sheets, a USB cable and PDF software. First off, I wish the unit used USBc instead of the old micro USB. I find the old one hard to install and remove. USBc is just so much more convenient as it goes in either way and I’ve never had one so snug that it feels like you may break the port. This unit is like that, very snug and I find myself checking the plug and port many times as I try to connect the two.
Once that was completed, installing the software was straight forward. I installed the scanning software and scanned the first color page I could find. It scanned very quickly and looked good. I just had to remember to put my fingers under the feeding edge, so it didn’t get caught on the keys/spacebar. Now for the bummer. I have a wireless printer (not Epson) that I like to use. I tried several times to get it to print, but it just said the printer drivers were bad. Reinstall drivers and retry again. I knew my printer was good, but I used other software to print…just in case. Nope, all good with everything else. So, I do what none of us do. I downloaded the manual and read away. It says this will only print directly to an Epson printer. I have one, but it’s not my main go-to. If I want to use my main printer, I have to scan the document, save it, open it up in a 3rd party PDF app, and print from there. Really! My main gripe as a consumer is all these electronic companies using proprietary software/hardware because they can’t play nice with another manufacturer. It only hurts the end-user. Ugh. If it wasn’t for that one thing, I would give this five stars. It works great except for that. So, three stars it is. It bothers me that much. Maybe enough users will complain, and they can patch it with a firmware update. If it’s hardware, then it is what it is.
So, would I recommend it to a friend? Well if my friend is an Epson user, yes by all means. But if they don’t have an Epson printer, then yes but factor in the price of a printer with the scanner purchase.

Should take care of normal tax prep
on January 26, 2021
Posted by: RandallFlagg
from Hi Desert, CA
I haven’t received my tax information yet, so doing a full review of the software isn’t feasible. But I can say that installing the software was a breeze. I had no issues with it. I received the download link and instructions. I downloaded the software, installed it, and then click state, where the software stated I was entitled to one state download and which state would I like. I chose my state and it downloaded it and installed it into the same software app. It also gave me the option to pay for an additional state should I need to do so. After the software was installed, a box popped up and stated many new laws were enacted or coming up and that updates would need to be installed. I opened the app today to do this review and the state app said there was an update and would I like to wait or install it now. I installed it and it took less than a minute and I’m good.

I like the software. The GUI is clean and not all cluttered. The 5 tabs at the top after you create a return are easy to read. There’s a welcome tab, federal tab, state tab, file tab, and a plan tab. The plan tab has 2 options for after you do your 2020 return. It offers help with estimating 2021 withholding and tax planning and retirement planning. Off to the left side of the 5 tabs, there’s a nice visible spot showing your Deluxe copy of H&R Block with the Federal and State refund due or owed. Under that is a help center button and then an FAQ with 5 questions posted. Lastly above the 5 tabs, you have 7 action buttons. They are Take me to, Forms, New/Open, Save, Print, E-File Status and Help Center.
For the last few years, I’ve gotten assistance for my tax preparation as a consumer with my state’s department of rehab (FYI injury…not recovery, not that either is bad or good) so I’ll use them again if it’s available. Due to Covid-19, I chose to have a copy of H&R Block’s app just in case. I used their service for about 4-5 years, and they treated me very well.
If you need tax preparation software, I’d say this Deluxe copy of H&R Block should take care of anyone with normal tax issues.

Cooks my favorite frozen pizza very well!
on January 25, 2021
Posted by: RandallFlagg
from Hi Desert, CA
So, I’m waiting on the delivery for the Bella Pro Series 7 in 1 indoor grill. I’m expecting a small air fryer and I’m around the corner at my parent's house. I leave a note for the delivery driver to toss it over the gate if I’m not home or miss them drive by. Wow, I’m glad I was home when they arrived. I had removed the note and when I saw the size of this box, there’s no way the driver would have been able to toss it over. This thing is big!
I thank the driver and lug this thing in the house. Actually, I rolled it in and then cut it open. Inside there’s the unit, which takes up almost the entire box, a grill grate, cooking pot, air fry basket, a manual, and a recipe book. It took no time to get up and running. All I needed to do was wash all the accessories and plug in the oven. Then I needed to decide what to try and cook. I eat a lot of frozen pizza, but being in the desert, I only like using the oven in the cold months. So right now, works, but come May through October, I use an old Pizzazz rotating oven on the countertop. It’s not great, it cooks the pizza, but not like an oven. So, I decided to try this out. I read the last page of the recipe book that shows how to make homemade pizza. At the bottom, it has directions on cooking frozen pizza. The box and the book state it will cook up to a 12” pizza. It looks big enough, but I still question whether or not it will. I did a frozen pizza out of the deep freezer and measure it on the way in from the garage. The box is 11.5 inches, so woohoo! The direction state to preheat the oven to -25 degrees of the stated temperature on the box, so 375 is the magic number. I turn on the unit with the power button, use the select button on the far left to choose pizza, and raise the temp from 360 to 375. I also raise the time from 10 minutes to 22. The box states 20-22 and I’m thinking longer based on my experience with the Pizzazz. The oven preheats very quickly. I barely had time to open the box and unwrap the pizza. 4 white/clear lights advance as it preheats. I drop the pizza on the grill grate as directed in the recipe book and there is plenty of room. I shut the lid and hear a ‘nice’ click and leave it to do its thing. I’m on the computer in the office when I hear a pleasant ding. It’s not too loud, but loud enough for me to hear it throughout the house. So how does it look?
At first, it looks like a pizza that spent just a minute or two too long in the oven. The sauce is nice and red, unlike my Pizzazz pizzas, but just about 10-12 pepperoni’s have edge burn. Not a bad thing, sometimes I prefer a tad burnt, so I let my palate decide the review. It cuts nice. The crust is cooked, not over or undercooked, but like soft toast. Most of the time, my Pizzazz tastes doughy and it’s a bit disappointing. Not tonight, the crust was soft with just a bit of bite to it and the edge crust was edible, like a pretzel. I had 3 pieces and tossed the rest in the fridge. The Bella cooked the pizza just as well as my Whirlpool oven. Had I peeked at it around 18-20 minutes, I probably would have turned it off and not burnt anything. I’m glad I did though, now I know if I go a bit long what I’ll end up with and if I undercook it a tad, I may end up with a softer crust.
I can’t wait to try more recipes in this thing. I still have tons of options to try baking, air frying, dehydrating so flank steak for jerky, cooking a roast with veggies as mom makes, and maybe even searing a steak. The Bella Pro Series 7-1 is super easy to clean. The removable pot keeps the unit clean and one only needs to wash the pot and whatever accessories they use for that meal. If there’s a downside, it’s storage. This oven is a beast, taking up a good 16 x 18 inches of counter space. It’s also a bit on the heavy side at just over 23 lbs. Also, it would have been awesome if all the accessories would have fit inside the unit when not in use, just to save space. I can fit all but one, which has to get tucked away behind the unit. Now that I’m thinking about any other issues, the grill grate handles were loose after the first use. One shows the black coating removed where it attaches to the grate. I don’t think it affects anything, but I don’t remember it being loose when I washed it or put it in the oven at the beginning of my test. That said, it’s a great appliance and one I’m sure to use for many years. It seems well build and should last through many adventures in cooking. I’d recommend it to anyone that enjoys learning new ways to prepare food with less effort.

Great portable projector for many projects
on January 21, 2021
Posted by: RandallFlagg
from Hi Desert, CA
Right out of the box, the power cord is too short. Using the projector for business, most conference rooms have outlets in the floor or along the walls. The cord should be at least as long as table height and about 6-10-foot run along the floor so extension cords (which most likely aren’t available) aren’t needed. That said, the keystone settings work great. I needed to test in a spot where the wall was offset. I was able to use the keystone horizontal feature to square up the picture. It reduced the picture size a bit but was readable. It would be okay for a presentation. In a conference room, one would most likely have a straight shot at a projection screen or blank wall, but if not, the keystone would still allow one to continue with the show.
So, you most likely will need some type of dongle to connect the projector to a laptop. I first used a laptop that had a USBc port and I have a dongle that goes USBc to VGA and USBc. I connect the VGA cable to the projector and dongle and tada, picture/mirror of my desktop. It was a bit hard to read and I’m guessing that’s the VGA signal, (now I know I need to do projector only on this pc). So, this newer laptop doesn’t offer any HDMI and I don’t want to run over to the store and pic up a dongle. They are available for under $20 (USBc to HDMI). I do however have a gaming laptop that has HDMI out, so off I go to change sources. Please…. stand by!
I connected the other laptop to the projector via an HDMI cable. At first, it didn’t work. I had a desktop showing and it had the correct toolbar, but it wasn’t showing the chosen background that the pc was. I then searched this laptop and I needed to press “Fn-F5” which opened a Windows side pane that gave me 4 options to chose from. Either just the monitor, just the projector, extending the desktop (default), and mirror. IMHO, mirror should be the default, but since it wasn’t, it allowed me to learn how to change views. All is good now. My first impression of the HDMI signal. Not that great, it still a bit hard to read. I guess I’ll have to try some different settings in Windows 10 ClearType or display resolution. Okay, I played around with the PC and projector, did a web search, and found out it’s most likely the PC resolution causing the issue. I press “Fn-F5” and chose projector only. It shut off the laptop screen and automatically squeeze the PowerPoint application to more of a 4:3 ratio and it was clear. I’ll post both photos so you can see the difference…hopefully. From my vantage point, the image using just the projector was clear and I was able to read the drop-down menu titles as well as the image of the rock and verbiage. I wouldn’t have any problem using this in a business setting with just the little I’ve discovered tonight.
I should have squeezed this in somewhere above, but Epson states this projector works great in bright rooms and I’ll have to agree. I’m used to using my ceiling projector in the dark, but for review purposes, I had the 5 light (60w LED bulb equivalent) chandelier shining bright and didn’t think two shakes about it. The picture was as good as my 60” Sharp LED Smart 4k tv. That should work great for presentations. With a well-lit room, attendees tend to pay more attention when their actions are easily seen. A speaker can lose some listeners as a room darkens, causing disruptions in the presentation and for others that wish to participate. The photos I post are from said lit room.
Overall, I think this is a great little projector. If I have any issues with it, they would be it needs a longer cord. For me, I can work with that as I have photography lights and they come with very long cords. Another thing is it’s a bit loud with the fan noise. Not overbearing, but if you're next to the unit, it has a whirl. And it should because it’s exhausting some warm air from the front vent. My Epson Cinema ceiling projector has the same whirl, but I fail to notice it after I start watching a program. I’m not so sure this would be the same for anyone close to it. That said, those few cons wouldn’t stop me from using this projector for lectures, instruction classes, or a business presentation. Heck, it wouldn’t stop me from shooting a movie at the house, inside or outside. It’s a sweet projector and as an Epson owner, I’d tell a friend to purchase Epson if they’re in the market. They seem to work with little to no issues and if you do have an issue, there are tons of posts on the net, most likely someone that’s trying to do what you are.

Compact blender for kitchens w/ no counter space
on January 20, 2021
Posted by: RandallFlagg
from Hi Desert, CA
Nice compact blender. The motor base is slender and has rear suction feet to keep it stable on a countertop. The plastic pitcher is the same diameter as the base and has a decent pair of cutting blades. The blades are small and stacked, but it looks like two blades at different heights. Regardless it cuts really well on number 4, at least for me. There are setting 0 thru 5 and although they do ramp up in speed from 1-5, the action seems different for each setting. On 3, the blender seems to be slow but does a good chop on my veggies. Then on 4, it starts to finely chop those veggies and liquifies the mix. The action seems more of a stir or eddy on 4 and an up and down action on 3. I don’t know how to explain it, but the varied movements on each setting help break down whatever I’m blending. If you get one, you’ll see.
So, I mentioned it’s compact. I have a small kitchen with very little counter space to waste. This tall, but compact unit tucks nicely under the corner cabinet. It’s square and about as wide or deep as my electric can opener (you do know how big my can opener is…don’t you?).
Anyway, if you’re looking for a small blender that you can leave out and use daily, this may be it. I’m happy with it and the stainless motor housing makes it look in style. I’d recommend it to anyone with a blender need and a tight kitchen.

Excellent results for my den's dead zone!
on January 15, 2021
Posted by: RandallFlagg
from Hi Desert, CA
So, I broke open the weBoost Home Studio Cell Phone Signal Booster kit today. As I opened the box, everything I need is included. The large outdoor antenna, 2 rolls of RG-6 cable, a male/male coax adapter to put the cables together if needed, the indoor antenna and receiver, and a 110v adapter for indoor power. The kit includes a mount, but they do recommend using a pole mount so you can aim the outdoor antenna. I chose that route as I have an old UHF antenna on the eave of my house, and it was up at the peak giving me the best vantage point to my closest Verizon signal.
I downloaded the Opensignal app from the play store and it told me exactly what I imagined. I have a den that is a dead zone. I can use my 4g phone throughout the house, but if I try to start a call from that room, it takes forever for it to connect and start ringing. The app showed my neighborhood and many of the houses were green. Mine was red. I’m guessing a neighbor signed up and that’s where the app chose to mark the dead zone. Anyway, I installed the kit. It’s straightforward if you’ve ever run RG-59 or RG-6 for satellite tv, security cameras, or cable. I mounted the outdoor antenna and attached the RG-6 cable to the underside of the eaves with plastic cable clamps. I was able to drill out the old antenna hole through the stucco into the house. Once the cable was inside the house, I connected the indoor antenna and plugged it in. I should say here that the Opensignal app is very useful because I always thought my closest signal was due west just outside of the multiple tracts of homes in my neighborhood, but it’s northeast in a brick substation under the high-tension lines. Connecting the indoor receiver and powering it up, I got all the red lights to turn green and I was ready to test it out.
I called a friend and I’d say 80% of the time or better, it takes multiple tries to get the phone to connect from the den. I usually try a few times, then it becomes a task I want to win, so I just keep trying or I see how many minutes can go by before it starts ringing. Not today. I sent the call and it did the usual lag. Ah, this thing isn’t going to work….but then after about 10 seconds, connected and ringing. I talk to him for a few minutes and then I have to try a few more. Success on about 5 calls and I’m happy. Usually, the phone shows 2 bars when I send a call and it drops to none as the call tries to connect. Not now! Full bars and no frustration.
I’m extremely happy with the results I received today. This room has been terrible not only for myself, but I’ve had guests over and many of them have problems with that room too. It’s happened with several different phone brands, so that can’t be the problem. Most if not all of us use Verizon, so it’s most likely the signal and this house. The house is pretty level with most of the houses between it and the substation. Now with the outdoor antenna up at the peak, it must have a less obstructed view or maybe it’s able to connect with the 4G’s signal bounce. Whatever it is doing, I hope it continues to work and it will be forgotten about. It’ll just sit there doing its job while I enjoy the benefits from it. I’d recommend this to anyone that has a small/medium size room in their house that has difficulty connecting to their carrier's signal. There are larger kits available for the whole house if that fits your need. This small unit won’t do a complete house, but it will give you some help in a part of it.

Inexpensive filter to deliver better tap water
on January 7, 2021
Posted by: RandallFlagg
from Hi Desert, CA
Opened the 3M Quick Change Standard Under Sink Water Filtration System and it looked like an easy install. Everything I needed looked to be included. Well until I looked at my system. My shut off valve has a different size fitting, so off to the hardware store to get a few parts. No big deal. Once I got back and made sure I had everything I emptied the cabinet under the sink (I think that took longer than the install) and picked a spot to hang the unit. It’s easy. Turn off the shut-off valve and remove the supply line. Use the parts I picked up and the quick connect supplied with the kit and attach the supply line to the upper open connection on the hanger. Then again with an adapter, use the supplied part to connect the incoming water supply to the lower-left connection on the hanger. Tada now just attach the filter. It only goes on one way…I think, and it tightens against the hanger as you turn.
Now does it work? I don’t know, it’s too soon to tell. The water still comes out and it tastes okay. I drink tap water anyway, so I can’t tell if it’s different or not. I can tell you I know in my head that it must be better for me. Removing Chlorine must be good and filtering the sand, rust, sediment and any soil is awesome. Just knowing its working is a positive and if it makes my tea, coffee, and hot chocolate taste better…bonus!
To see if other users have a positive view of the system, I checked a few online store reviews and I see that the only negative response is it’s hard to locate filters for the unit. I found a couple of links, but they were sold out and I don’t know if that’s because they are discontinued or because of our current situation with Covid-19. I do know that 3M posted this answer on one site, “This system is compatible with replacement filter models 3US-AF01, 3US-PF01, and 3US-MAX-F01.” (3m.com via HomeDepot.com) Using that advice, I was able to find third party filters sold individually, in pairs, and multipacks at reasonable prices. Knowing that in six months I can replace the filter is one of the most important issues with any product that has parts that need to be changed out.
I’d recommend this to my friends since it has a low cost and easy install. My area has hard water, so having an inexpensive way to deliver better-tasting water works.

Nice spot and single room shampooer!
on December 21, 2020
Posted by: RandallFlagg
from Hi Desert, CA
I have a full-size carpet shampoo machine and use it 2-3 times per year. Occasionally, I’ve spilt something that requires more than just spot spray, water, and a rag. In comes the Bissell JetScrub Pet Lightweight Upright Carpet Cleaner! I really hated having to lug out a heavy machine, fill and rinse the tank and lug it back into storage. This Bissell unit is less than 14lbs. It’s light enough for my mom to use for quick cleanups or possibly a single room or hallway. I don’t think it would be good for an entire house. You’d probably have to add and change the water quite often, but for a quick or small job, it’s wonderful.
So, what do I like about the unit? I love that it has tons of bristles or brush, whichever you call it. As I mentioned, it’s light. Not so light that it feels cheap or unable to last, but light enough to grab it and carry it over to a spill or work area. I also like the long cord and the one thing most manufacturers fail to add, but Bissell didn’t on this unit, the clip to hold the cord up by the handle. It’s such a small plastic add on, but it helps not have to tape or tie the cord up and out of the way. The CleanShot nozzle that you can pretreat a stain in your path works well and the LED lights are great in a dark area or if you like working in the dark, lol!
The box includes the unit, a nozzle cleaning wand, a wash base for rinsing the unit after using it, and a small bottle of Pet Pro Oxy Urine Eliminator. Putting it together was a snap…no, really. You just snap the handle onto the extension post, raise the post and wind up the cord. Done! As for cleanup, the nozzle and brush roller remove easily, and the tray makes clean up easier. Run the unit to rinse the waste tank and brush and you’re ready for the next mess.

Makes the Surface Pro a laptop

I've used a Brydge keyboard in the past and loved it. It turns a tablet into a laptop. So I open the box. First thing I notice is Brydge still has a nice reusable box with a magnetic clasp to keep it closed. I take out the keyboard and it has about a 60% charge. I place the tablet in the hinges and like my other one, the hinges are tight, which is good. You don't want it moving around or falling out. The hinges are also really stiff, almost too stiff, but you don't want the tablet flopping around...do you?
So I fire up the tablet and read the instructions on how to pair the Bluetooth. I follow the 6 steps or so and it pairs nicely. It doesn't take much, just turn on both the keyboard and tablet, go into Windows settings, device and click add a Bluetooth accessory. Press the Bluetooth key on the keyboard (the F11 key) and Brydge Pro 12.3 will appear in Windows. A key will be given and type it on the keyboard and hit enter. You won't see anything on the tablet, but once you hit enter, the pairing should complete and your mouse pointer will appear and move.
Now that it was pair, I tried it out. I use various games and applications to see if there was any lag. I didn't experience any. It was as if the two were manufactured as one unit. The large touchpad works very good. As it's a precision touchpad, I was able to use Windows gestures to zoom, scroll, open Cortana and more. I must say I'm truly impressed with the keyboard, but then I was with my other one as well.
Once I finished running it through it's paces, I had less than 50% and I wanted to see if it charged as quickly as listed in the manual. It says a full charge in about 3 hours. I spun the keyboard around looking for the port and nicely found a USB-c port...yeah! Since my smart phone used one, I have a cable and charger right handy. The keyboard does include a cable, but why unroll a new cord when I have one already hooked up with a charger? I plugged it in and like my phone, completely forgot about it. I remembered it was charging when I started the review. I went and checked and sure enough, the red light was out and that means it's fully charge. I can't say if it was more or less than 3 hours, but it charged fast enough for me.
So usually I post my likes and dislikes, but I don't think I have any dislikes. It just works, like I expected and wanted it to. I like the white backlit keys and the response they give. I use mechanical keyboards on all my desktops and love em'. I learned to type on the old IBM tanks and anyone that hears me type...yes hears, will tell you I bang the keys. It's just the way I was taught. The Brydge keyboard may not be mechanical, but I think it can take my banging and I get some feedback from the keys and that works for me on laptops, which is what the Brydge keyboard does for the Surface Pro.

Great individual blender as well as full size one!

I opened up the box and it included the base motor, pitcher with lid, 2 cups with lids and sliding cover for sipping (more on that in a bit) and a blade cap that fits the cups.
Since it seems like a great smoothie or drink blender, I decide to make my green smoothie. It isn't the easiest thing for a blender to mix. I didn't use all the ingredients, but I did include frozen mangos, blueberries, pears and peaches. Also frozen kale, spinach, moringa powder and nutritional yeast. Oh and a bit of water and ice. I started on the lowest setting, 1 and it was trying. That's better than most blenders off the bat. I move it to 2, then 3, 4 and finally 5. On high speed, fluids are moving, but not chopping. I figure this is going to be a flop, but no, I move it back to 4 and it begins attacking the ice pieces. Good and then 3 and it makes a liquid. I move it back to 5, this time while the motor is spinning and it has no issue. In fact, there's a bit of a lag before the motor picks up speed. It blends really well and I find I need to add a bit of water because it's still rather thick. I thought it would be thin because of all the frozen ice and added water. About 30 seconds on 5 and it's drinkable and taste as it should. I was really surprised. Clean up was simple. Rinse with warm water, add a drop or two of dish soap and rinse till the suds are gone. Dry and attach the blade to the cup so it doesn't decide to cut me later on.
So the only downside is the cup lids. First off, where do I store the second lid or blade when not in use? It would be nice if there were a caddy on the mixer motor somewhere. Second, I dislike the lid design and think it needs work. That's my only negative with the whole unit.
So, overall it's a great blender. That's why I gave it a 5, but explained the one thing I found wrong. I'd recommend this to anyone who likes making blended drinks. It works and works well. In my opinion, the 1-5 speeds aren't slow to fast, but each seems to work a bit different and together they get the drink mixed.

The phones that are sold as "Verizon" phones. Do they have Verizon branding on them?

I received the unit as a reviewer, so I got it before the release...I believe. I can say the the unit I have doesn't have any Verizon logos on the phone front or back. The only logo on mine is the Google "G" on the back. Hope that helps.

Can I plug this into myHP desktop computer to watch Webinars?

As long as you have the green mini jack on the front, top or back of your desktop you can. The headset isn't USB, it has a pink and green mini plug, the pink for microphone and the green for headset. Windows 10 switched it over from my Creative speakers to the headset automatically. If not you would right click on the speaker icon in the lower right of your screen and pick playback, scroll down to Headphones and chose it for default. Then when you are finished you might have to go back and switch default back to your speakers. Most likely Windows will do it all for you when you plug in the green jack. Good Luck.
