"Yes", in terms of capturing *much* more of the scene. "No" in terms of low-light performance and "maybe" in terms of how close you can get to the action. To get the most out of this lens you need good lighting and to be closer to your subject than you think you might. To get better low/indoor light performance (a lens with a larger maximum aperture/smaller f-stop) you have to pay a *lot* more. If you're up in the stands you might end up with some really inclusive shots of the court with a lot of players that are hard to make out.
You might be better off with an 18-200 or 18-300 *zoom* lens that would allow you to capture as much or as little of the action as you want at a moment's notice.
Good luck!
