Packed with features, great value
on April 18, 2024

I really like the VoiceCaddie T9. It has golf features my previous golf watch doesn't have, but it costs about half as much. But, it's not perfect. First, there's a lot to like. When put in golf mode, the watch searches for golf courses and locates the one you are currently on. If you enter your normal driving distance, the watch shows you where your drive would end up, helping you avoid hazards. It also shows the distance to and beyond hazards by just tapping on the hazard. In addition, it tracks your shots, including putts. But where it really shines is the greens. Without the normal subscription fees the other guys charge, it shows slope using a heat map. This is particularly important for approach shots on a course you've never played before. On putts, it will show you distance to the pin and slope numbers. Not necessarily a game changer, but handy.
So, what do I not like about it? I haven't yet figured out how to play 9 holes with it. If you quit after 9 holes, it seems to give you pars on all the back nine holes. Also, I'm not sure you can start on a hole other then the first hole. That's a problem for those days when the front nine is backed up and you want to start on the back 9. I'm not saying it's not possible, I just haven't been able to figure it out.
Even with the aforementioned quirks, I still think the T9 is a really good watch and a really good bargain. Highly recommended!!

Tremendous range, great throughput
on March 14, 2024
Posted by: MichaelM
The Linksys Velop Micro 6 is a surprisingly good router. Why surprisingly good? This is my first mesh router. For whatever reason, I always felt that I would be giving up something- speed, throughput, etc.- if I went with mesh router. So I've stayed away from them. But recently I built my dream shop next to my house and didn't want to run ethernet to the building, so the best solution was a mesh router. I've been using Linksys routers for years, so the Velop Micro 6 seemed like a good option. And it has shown me my concerns about mesh routers were unfounded.
I ran speed tests comparing my previous router, which is one of the fastest made, and found internet speeds to almost identical. And I got the same results with cross-network file transfers. So if speed is a concern, like it was for me, then there are no worries here.
Back to the shop I built and the reason I got the Velop Micro 6 to begin with. All I had to do is plug in one of the 2 nodes included in the box, and boom, WiFi in the shop! To make sure I had the strongest signal, I placed the node on the router side (house side) of the building. And the nodes are small and unobtrusive, and look great.
Bottom line--if you need the coverage, or if you have noticed dead spots or low signal areas in your home or business, you can't go wrong with the Velop Micro 6. It has fantastic coverage, is fast, and looks good to boot.

The perfect laptop?
on March 10, 2024
Posted by: MichaelM
The Asus ROG Zephyrus G16 could be the perfect laptop...at least for some people. It is probably the best gaming laptop currently on the market, but should be equally good for CAD, heavy video editing and graphic manipulation. Plus is does every day stuff...very quickly. What makes it so good? Lots.
For beginners, it has the fastest laptop processor Intel makes-- the Core Ultra 9. It also has the fastest laptop video adapter made-- the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090. And the 16", 2.5K OLED screen is one of the best I've seen on a laptop, with a refresh rate of 240Hz, making motion in games silky smooth. Colors are amazing with incredible blacks and super contrast ratios.
With all that power under the hood, how is the battery life? Pretty decent actually. The battery is 90Wh and it is sufficient for a day's usage for creating documents and surfing the web. Playing games will, of course, deplete the battery, mainly because the heavy-hitting RTX 4090 will be called into action, so just go ahead and plug it in.
I am also really impressed with the sound. Asus put some work into giving it more bass, and they were successful. The result is a really rich, full sound.
Lastly, the ROG Zephyrus G16 is a beautiful laptop. It has to be one of the thinnest gaming laptops out there.
If you need a great laptop that can handle anything you throw at it, and you don't mind paying for the power, the G16 could be the perfect laptop.

Great health metrics, decent smartwatch features
on November 21, 2023
Posted by: MichaelM
The Withings ScanWatch 2 is what the company calls their heart health hybrid smartwatch. Aesthetically, it looks like a sleek, high-quality, analog timepiece. You can wear the ScanWatch with a tux, but it's right at home with jeans, as well. But underneath the svelte exterior is a host of health tracking features like body temp tracking, ECG measurement and AFib detection, blood oxygen level, HR low/high notifications, in-depth sleep tracking and recovery, and steps and workout tracking. It's absolutely incredible how much tech Withings packed into such a small package.
All of the health tracking features seemed accurate. However, I have so far not been impressed with the sleep tracking feature. While the metrics are nice, the watch is designed to determine when you go to sleep and wake up. It has been dead on with when I wake up, but often has me going to sleep and hour or 2 after I go to bed. I normally fall asleep very quickly, so I there is an issue with sleep detection. I'm hopeful this can be resolved in future software updates, but it's not a deal-breaker for me.
Lastly, the health metrics are excellent, but I would say this watch is a health tracker first and a smartwatch second. Because of the small notification area on the watch face, messages are more difficult to read than on a pure smartwatch.
Should you buy it? If you are looking for top-notch health tracking from a device that looks like a million bucks, the ScanWatch 2 is absolutely the best option out there. However, if smartwatch features, like apps and being able to read and respond to texts and emails on the watch, are what you are looking for, there are better options, but you'll end up with a watch that looks like, well...a smartwatch, not a quality timepiece.

Experience the fun of RF mount content creation with the smallest and lightest EOS R series camera¹, the Canon EOS R100. The EOS R100 also can record Full HD video at up to 60 frames per second, and detailed, high-res 4K from the central area of the sensor at 24 frames per second. Compact, light, great pictures and features
on November 21, 2023
Posted by: MichaelM
When I first started looking at the Canon R100, I was really looking for a camera that I could take traveling, walking around town, point and shoot, but that would take high quality photos. Did it deliver on all things?
The first thing that I want to talk about is the size and weight. This camera is SO light and very compact. It is so easy to throw in a backpack and walk around all day. I wanted something that I could take on a day on the trails hiking or in town for some cool pictures, but that wasn’t going to weigh me down like my Canon 5D3. But with that size and weight, you don’t sacrifice performance with the pictures and video.
The second thing that I want to talk about is ease of use of the camera. No matter if you want to point and shoot in auto or venture into the manual modes and have a little fun, it is just like any other Canon I have used. Everything works just like my 5D3 and it allowed me the ability to get what I wanted out of the picture.
The other great feature to this camera is the Bluetooth and Wifi capabilities. You can take a picture, immediately upload it to your phone, and start editing on the go. I love the immediate gratification of driving home after a shoot and starting the editing process of a picture that you love. No computers, SD card readers, or wires to hassle with.
The camera came with a 18-55 lens that took really quality portrait pictures. The quality, bokeh, focal length are all great for a point and shoot camera. It is very slim and compact, but I felt took really good photos for a beginner lens. One note on this, you will have to buy only the mirrorless lenses, UNLESS you have the converter for other lenses. So those of you who shoot Canon already, just a note that you will have to buy the adapter for your old lenses.
After shooting with the Canon R100, I would recommend it for a great starter and travel camera. Its compact size, light weight, good price, and Bluetooth and Wi-Fi capabilities, it makes the perfect camera for getting you into and keeping you in taking photos!

The best yet
on October 29, 2023
Posted by: MichaelM
I've owned 3 different video doorbells from 3 different companies, and I can honestly say the Ecobee Smart Doorbell is the best yet.
For starters, video quality is excellent, even at night. As far as I know, this is the only video doorbell with HDR, and I believe it makes a difference, especially in low light. I also love the Smart Focus feature. It is currently in beta, but it's amazing. It keeps a moving object (a person, animal, etc.), in focus and pans and zooms to keep them in the frame, but still keeps keeps the same 1080p quality. The app is well-done, too. It has typical options like motion detection, person detection, and package detection. My only complaint, and it's a small one, is that I was unable to find a way to keep the camera from recording our dog. So our yellow lab has become the unwitting star of a number of videos. An animal detection option would be a nice addition.
I also like the fact that the Smart Doorbell uses radar for motion detection, so leaves and moths won't trigger notifications.
The Smart Doorbell comes with 2 free months of "Standard" subscription, normally $5/month, which give you access to 30 days of video recording, package detection, and rich notifications (a snapshot of what's going on at your door in your notifications area on your phone). I believe it's worth $5 for the added features. Ecobee also offers a "Complete" subscription for $10/month which adds professional monitoring for added security.
I highly recommend the Ecobee Smart Doorbell. It has many of the typical features video doorbells offer, but innovates with radar and better video through the use of HDR. It offers excellent audio, as well. The app has been well thought out, and subscriptions for added features are reasonable.

Small, easy to use entry level espresso machine
on October 29, 2023
Posted by: MichaelM
When I received the Bella Pro Series Slim Espresso Machine I was skeptical. I am not an espresso wizard by any means, but I do own a Breville Barista Pro and didn’t want to compare it to that. I wanted to have a machine that I could make a quick, quality espresso without taking up to much space on my counter and this Bella Pro Series really delivers on that.
Let’s start with some of the positives to this espresso machine. The first is the size. It is a very slim, compact machine that can fit on any counter. I live in a one bedroom apartment and it hardly takes up any counter space, unlike some of the more expensive espresso machines. The second was the ease of use. It is so very easy to use. Just a few buttons, fill up the reservoir, tamp your grind, get a cup, and you’re sipping a really good espresso. If you prefer a drink with some added milk it also has a steamer, which is great. And the third is I was very pleasantly surprised by the quality of the espresso. I used a single origin African coffee (I prefer using different beans to test espresso and not just specific espresso roasts) and the flavor was very light, fruity, with very little bitterness. The machine has a few adjustments, but I was very surprised how good it was straight out of the box for a single shot. This machine is great for those wanting to get into espresso without breaking the bank or getting “nerdy” about brew times, strengths, ratios, temps, contact times and extractions. The machine is cheap and very easy to use.
There are a few things that I will say are “negatives” to the Bella Pro Series. The first is there is very little customizations to the espresso. This can be a negative if you want to really get into nitty gritty of espresso. The second is that it feels very plastic. For the price, this is exactly what I would expect, but it can be a negative for some people looking for more quality. The third is, for those that like to buy whole beans, you will need a grinder of some sort, or you will just have to buy pre-ground beans. But there is no build in burr grinder.
All and all, I am very pleased with the quality, ease of use, and price of this espresso machine. The Bella Pro Series Slim Espresso Machine really delivers on all of those attributes. If you are looking for a small, easy to use, entry level espresso machine than I would 100% give this a try.

Truly excellent earbuds for gaming and life
on October 29, 2023
Posted by: MichaelM
I've always been a big fan of Sony earbuds and was excited to see if wireless earbuds for gaming would be everything Sony was promising. There just aren't that many options out there in the category.
While the INZONE Buds have been tuned specifically for gaming, they also sound pretty decent for music. From what I've read, they use the same architecture as the WF-1000X earbuds, and those have become classics. These are Sony earbuds, so sound quality it not an issue. But how they work for gaming, since they were built for that purpose, is the issue.
Latency is always an issue with any wireless device in gaming. A split second can be the difference between success and failure. Sony promises latency of less than 30ms and I believe it. I haven't seen any issues with latency thus far.
The other concern I had was spatial issues with earbuds since there is so little space to work with. Sony seems to have figured this issue out with 360 Spatial Sound and the INZONE Hub allows the user the personalize the sound field to suite the user's taste. I have been impressed with how this works in gaming and have been able to hear when and from what direction opponents are coming from in Modern Warfare II. Bass could be stronger, but I wasn't expecting over the ear headphone bass from earbuds anyway.
Sony advertises the INZONE Buds as being comfortable, and they aren't wrong. I've worn them longer than I should have and haven't noticed any discomfort whatsoever. And typical Sony, noise cancelling works well, pretty much blocking out all but the sound of the game.
My only disappointment with the INZONE Buds was the lack of documentation in the box. As others have said, I felt I was left on my own to figure out much of the magic that makes the INZONE Buds so good.
Overall, I've been very pleased with the INZONE Buds. Sound quality is excellent, fit is amazing, and Spatial Sound works great.

Just when you thought it couldn't get any better
on October 16, 2023
Posted by: MichaelM
The Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro are the best cell phones on the planet right now. Hands down. I decided on the smaller Pixel 8 and I'm glad I did. I'm giving up a couple of features, but I'm loving the smaller size. So, why should you get it? For starters the new G3 Tensor chip enables advanced AI and amazing photo and video editing features. Don't like something/someone in your picture...use Magic Erasure to get rid of the offending item. You can move things around in the photo using Magic Editor. Audio Magic Eraser lets you remove sounds from wind, cars, even voices from your videos. All on the phone!
One of my favorite features, however, is the call screening feature. Google Assistant helps filter out spam calls by screening your calls. You'll know who's calling and why so you can decide if you want to answer the call or not. I get a lot of spam calls, so this feature has been a huge help.
Battery life is phenomenal. I can get around 2.5 days with it, using it moderately, but 2 full days with fairly heavy usage.
Besides what you can do with photos and video after you take them, the camera is, in my opinion, the best camera available on a cell phone besides the Pixel 8 Pro. At 50MP you can capture tons of detail, even when cropping.
This is a fantastic phone. I've been completely happy with it and highly recommend it.

Another great DJI drone
on October 10, 2023
Posted by: MichaelM
DJI is the undisputed drone champion, and the new Air 3 is just further proof of that. It's a fantastic drone that sits between the Mini 4 and Mavic lines in both size and price. It has features that photographers, content creators, and casual users could all appreciate.
I own 3 DJI drones. They all have excellent flight characteristics, and loads of features. For me, the major differentiator comes down to the camera.
The Air 3 has two cameras--a wide-angle and 3x telephoto, at 24mm and 70mm respectively. So, when you can't fly there, the telephoto lens can easily take you there. Yes, you could crop the image from the 24mm lens, but you'll lose data. The telephoto lens retains the data, thus retaining quality. I posted a couple of pictures to illustrate the 3x telephoto lens.
Picture and video quality from the Air 3 is excellent. Colors are vibrant, but not overblown, if you prefer you can shoot RAW. The camera comes in at 48MP, so you can capture lots of detail.
The only complaint I have is minor. Most DJI drones include a strap that keeps the blades in place for storage. The Air 3 does not have this type of strap. I just try to be careful when putting it in the case.
Should you buy the Air 3? That's a tough question. It uses the same camera as a less expensive DJI model, but adds a second camera with a mid tele lens. If you think you would benefit from the 70mm lens, the Air 3 is a great option. I can tell you I've enjoyed the flexibility.

Choose this unlocked Huawei Honor 6X smartphone for its powerful capabilities. It includes an octa-core Kirin processor and 3GB of RAM to run apps quickly, and it has 32GB of internal storage that can be expanded to 128GB by adding a microSD card.

Had a few more questions. Does this phone work well with Snapchat? Does it come with a charger? How's the battery life? Is there any camera stabilization for videos

It works great with Snapchat. Yes, it comes with a charger. Battery life is excellent. I'm not a heavy user, but I often get two days out of a charge. Lastly, no, it does not have image stabilization. Remember that it's a $200 phone, and it has a 1080 screen as well as 3 gigs of RAM. Image stabilization was one of the corners they had to cut to keep the price down. The other was Gorilla Glass. It comes with a decent screen protector, though.

What does 'Unlocked' mean? It sounds like the phone will work on anybody's cell service, and yet looking through your answers to other questions the phone is limited to certain cell companies. What is the advantage of an 'Unlocked' phone?

Unlocked means it will work on any GSM carrier. That would be AT&T and T-Mobile in the USA, and any MVNO that uses their towers. It will not, however, work on Verizon or Sprint.

The advantage of using an unlocked phone is that if you switch from AT&T to T-Mobile, or vice-versa, you can easily take your phone with you. In addition, if you travel to another country, you will be able to purchase a SIM card that will work on this or any other unlocked phone.

Most carriers will unlock their phones because of consumer pressure, so purchasing an unlocked phone is not a huge deal anymore. I purchased the Honor 6X not because it is unlocked, but because it is an exceptional bargain.

Since you cannot install graphics cards in this tablet, it would not be suitable for a game requiring a high-end graphics card.

Can you hide the screen buttons on this device? I want to use it as a signature tablet for checking out clients and clients constantly touch the back button or home button accidentally.

If you are talking about web pages, you can run Edge or Chrome in kiosk mode and the menu bar will not show. Just do a search for kiosk mode in Edge or Chrome to find out how to set things up.

You can hide the Home button on the bezel of the tablet by putting it in a case that covers it. Alternately, a strategically placed piece of electrical tape might do the job.
