Great on Old Stains
on March 22, 2020

Stuck inside and got an early jump on spring cleaning. This stuff has helped get out some of the carpet stains that have hung around for too long. Between recent puppy and kid, plenty to take care of. Plus a few stains from the parents, too. I think some were coffee and cola besides what the kid and dog did.
I like the idea of using a black light to find areas we've previously missed but haven't had a chance to get out to find one of those. Would be great idea if one came free with the bottle.

Stolen for Son's Usage
on March 1, 2020

I used the USB-C port for the first time in my laptop tonight. I didn't even know I had one. I'm so used to just using the more typical USB-A one. In case you don't have a USB-C port on your machine, you'll need to get a converter cable for no more than $10.
Once connected, the rest of the setup is a breeze. The camera itself sat on top of the external monitor just fine. You can also place on the side of the monitor quite easily. Or, you can use the included tripod. You don't have to change a configuration setting if you rotate the camera from horizontal to vertical placement. Once connected, my son saw thq quality of the image and stole it from me, or at least borrowed it until something better came along. I guess he streams more, so probably a better place to try out anyways.
Broadcasting comes next. You get a nice sharp image with great video quality. It is Full HD 1080p at 60 fps video, so I wouldn't expect anything else. While it has a built-in microphone, our external/USB Blue Yeti microphone provided far superior sound. Using an external microphone also allows you to pass the microphone around so the speaker doesn't need to ennunciate directly towards the StreamCam. And, if you don't have an external mike, just use the one built into your headphones.
Of course, you get the camera for streaming anyways. Here Twitch was the testing platform. The favorite features while streaming... auto focus and factial tracking. Good things to have when you can get very vocal while playing and need to move around a bit.
One disappointment with the web cam was the quality of the still pictures the web cam could take. With most phones doing over 10 megapixels, the just over megapixels seems on the low side.
In the end, my son is becoming more adept at borrowing thing. Hopefully, this isn't a trend that he should be developing. And, of course, the video quality is hard to match for the web cam.

Great for Streaming

I keep meaning to do more unboxing videos but the audio quality of my prior setup was producing horrible audio. The stand-alone mike improves the quality immensely.
My son keeps wanting to borrow the microphone, too. He's been gaming lately and wants to stream over Twitch and wants things to sound just right so he can flex his setup. He's also tried it out on his Soundcloud channel with great success.
Still figuring out all the options but from a sound output quality perspective, about 1000 times better then with old setup without even changing the default settings. Should just improve from here.
Wish I got sooner.

Great For On-The-Go Needs
on November 13, 2019

There once was a time when your printers needed to be connected by wire to the network and plugged-in. The WF-110 functions without either of these.
I frequently meet up with clients to discuss contract details, then go back to home office and print off final contract to get countersigned. This printer makes it so much easier to get contract settled before leaving meeting. Can also even print out full sized invoices thanks to the WF-110 when work is completed. This printer should help shorten the closing time of deals and ultimately quicken the payment side as there is less delay then mailing invoices.
Setup of the printer was relatively easy. Your system can even talk directly to it when not in an area where both you can printer can connect to a local network. Print speed is adequate and when you run out of power, you can connect it to a USB power bank if you can't plug the printer into a wall outlet.
I would not recommend this as a way to print photos when on the road. Stick to printing them either at your local CVS/Walgreens or on our own personal printer back home.
Besides printing contracts and invoices, I can see a good use of this being to print out meeting notes when more people show up then expected. Need to make a quick presentation/slide change, print out the replacement page. I can just imagine going to a meeting away from office with presentation to deliver and finding a mistake somewhere in the content. No need to run back to your regular printer or get permission and physical access to printer at client site.
Do stick to replacement ink from Epson vs generic third-party variety. Otherwise, you risk your system being shutdown.
Overall, I like the printer even if the print speed is on the low end side.If you're a frequent road-warrior, you'll quickly get your money back
Print speed is adequate

Time for an Update
on November 11, 2019
Posted by: JohnZ
from Boston, MA
I've been a regular AVG users for years and just time for an update. With so many machines in the house, better to do a single purchase for all then individual purchases. Setup on each machine was a piece of cake, all Windows boxes. While I didn't purposely try to install an infected file to see how the program would respond, I've always found the product to keep my machine safe with little to no performance penalty. Being a computer geek, the interface is easy to navigate. My wife, who is much less technically savvy, is more than capable of keeping her machine safe. Still getting used to AVG Password Protection. I like that it will warn me if I have weak or duplicate passwords, and even takes me to the right place to change. Having unique passwords for each site will definitely keep you safer when online as anyone learning one won't automatically be given access to all yours. Eagerly awaiting to see if my camera is turned on w/o my knowledge. Overall, a continued fan of the product. Now comes the real test. I try not to do known unsafe browsing, but if I do, I'll be happy to see AVG watching over me.

Not Your Cheap $50 Basic Unit
on October 25, 2019
Posted by: JohnZ
from Boston, MA
Who would have thunk you needed more than a cheap $50-ish microwave. Sure, that will certainly get the job done of heating your food for the time YOU put in, but why rely on yourself to guess how long it takes to heat up your food when you can take the guesswork out of the equation and let the microwave itself decide based up its smart detection technology. It is almost like self-driving a car where you tell it where you want to go and sit back and enjoy the ride.
In addition to the cooking smarts, you have lots of other bells and whistles on the unit, and of course the basics. The first thing you have to get used to is the dial for setting cook times when you time things yourself. You can't just punch in 3 minutes but must rotate the dial. Or you can also hit one of the specific buttons for heating pizza, melting butter, popping popcorn, or defrosting meat.
The oddest thing to get used to is the quiet closing of the microwave door. You get so used to that latching sound when you close the door that you miss it for a while and wonder if the door is actually closed. Along with the mute function, this allows you to use the microwave in the middle of the night without risk of waking someone up. There is also a couple of sounds to choose from if you do want notification and... volume control for those times when you want it extra loud.
Might just have to consider more Australian brands in the future as this one is a certain hit, especially those that have been around since the 1930s.

The Heat is On
on October 15, 2019
Posted by: JohnZ
from Boston, MA
You'll never again have the excuse that there isn't time to let the butter get to room temperature before you can make cookies. Thanks to the HeatSoft option, you can start slowly by mixing the sugar and butter with cold butter that will slowly heat up as you're mixing the initial ingredients. You can't just throw in the whole stick of butter though. You do have to cut it up to inch-size cubes. But once cubed, you're off an running and can have the cookie dough done relatively quickly after being asked by the kid for cookies. Sure, you can certainly microwave the butter to soften but that isn't the best option as it does affect the cookie texture.
With HeatSoft, there are some things to be aware of. First, the hand mixer is heavier. If you're used to a light mixer, just be aware of the different. Also, with HeatSoft, you have to make sure the blades cool down before taking them off. That's important to know if you have a kid who likes to lick the blades when you're done. They should have cooled down by then since the butter heating part is just done at the beginning of the process, not the whole mixing. Lastly, you have to be conscious of NOT placing the mixer down blocking the vent in the back while the HeatSoft is on. I'm not actually sure what would happen if you did that, but I suspect bad things will happen if you do... probably could lead to a fire if I had to guess if you left the mixer there long enough.
Overall, the Oster mixer works great as a mixer. The machine can handle some of the heavier loads, but the beauty of the machine is in adding the HeatSoft feature so you can get started baking more quickly while the kid is demanding cookies now...

Great Little Speaker
on October 13, 2019
Posted by: JohnZ
from Boston, MA
Great little speaker that has strong bass and supurb sound, 30' Bluetooth range and battery that lasts nearly a day without losing quality. Even can handle a little water if taken to beach or pool provided you properly close all flaps covering the ports. Have not tried with snow, but should be able to handle some of that, just don't let it get buried for too long. Can be used as a phone speaker though call quality not as good as it could be. If you're looking for something compact that is inexpensive, you won't be disappointed. If you spend more, you'll certainly get more. It just becomes a question of do you really need to spend more when something like this Insignia is available.

Practice Makes Perfect
on September 20, 2019
Posted by: JohnZ
from Boston, MA
Be prepared to give up a lot of counter space. With that said, if you're a fan of espresso, it is well worth it. Setup was a breeze and then you're your own personal barista.
When first setup, you'll need to play around with the various settings until you find the perfect configuration that matches your desires. From then on, just hit "my" and let the machine reuse your saved setup for you to get a consistent brew perfect for your tastebuds.
There are dual heating elements inside for heating up the milk and water separately, helping you to get that fresh cup just a little more quickly. And, with the milk you can make foam or just get it heated.
While the machine is big and bulky, using it is a breeze. You'll be an expert in no time. And, if it isn't good at first, just practice. You don't have to drink it all, but from a cost perspective, it is better to spend the time and money on practice shots then hitting up your local Starbucks for the daily fix. Some quick math will show how much you're saving, with the machine paying for itself eventually, in like a year or two.
Thankfully, the machine matches our statinless steel appliances. Now all we need are some demitasse cups...

Clean your carpets efficiently with this iRobot Roomba vacuum. It lets you set a schedule for automated vacuuming, and the sensors help it navigate under furniture and around objects on the floor for a more thorough cleaning job. This iRobot Roomba vacuum has internal brushes, agitators and suction to handle debris and pet hair.

Does this have to have a monthly subscription to keep it running? How does it know where to go?

No monthly fees required.

There is a single "box" you can use to setup a barrier. The box has two modes. You can use the straight line mode to block off a doorway. It will setup an barrier to between it and the wall across from it that the Roomba won't cross. There is also an "arc" mode that you can use by let's say placing it between your dog bowls. That will create an arc around the bowls so it won't repeatedly ram into them. Otherwise, it has free reign of where it will go. If the battery starts getting low, it will return to base.

What are the dimension and how can be charged? It has a bag to store all the dirty? Thanks

The Roomba is about 13" around. There is a base you plug into the wall that the machine parks over whenever it needs a charge. So, add a couple more inches for depth for the base. No bag. It has a small bin in the front that you can empty when the machine is parked.

Can you use any solution with this machine ? Also, does this clean in the grooves of textured floors ?

It is not recommended you use another solution. I think that has the potential to void the warranty.
