Great package

Once again Criterion has outdone previous versions of an important title. If you have the previous MGM dvd you should get this for the vastly improved visual quality, but even if that isn't necessarily enough to warrant a repurchase, the large package of significant extras should persuade you. Not the least of these is Liv & Ingmar, a nearly 1 1/2 long film about the relationship between actor Liv Ullmann and Bergman.

I love all of the Powell/Pressburger films from this period, and this is amazing achievement considering the (wartime) conditions that is was filmed during. Propaganda is there, but not heavy-handed. It's a long film, but thank goodness, the shortened versions that used to be shown in the US are long a thing of the past.
Definitely an improvement over the DVD, but just a reminder that a big plus is the Audio commentary featuring director Michael Powell with Martin Scorsese, Powell is a bit tough to understand, but was caught just in time (he died shorty after it was recorded).

Olivier is satisfyingly snarky as Richard III, but you don't need to take my word for it....it's an acknowledged seminal performance! The real draw here for those who know the film via the several VHS and previous dvd release is that the new restoration and transfer to BluRay simply makes it a freshly minted experience! Colors are vibrant and accurate (within the souped up Technicolor palette) and the improved resolution lifts several layers of haze off previous versions!
