supplements smaller laptops

This keypad’s purpose is to supplement a couple of small laptops (smaller than 14 inch screens) that lack a numeric keypad. If you’ve ever had to enter even a fair amount of numbers into a document or spreadsheet, you’ll appreciate having a keypad. I actually have another keypad, but it has a PS/2 connector, and PS/2 to USB adapters are hard to find and probably not worth the cost. The Insignia keypad simply plugs into a USB port and is usable right away. However, if you start inputting numbers and nothing shows on your laptop screen, then you didn’t turn on the “Num Lock” button (indicated by a light on the keypad).

good maps and directions, wimpy alerts
on January 21, 2018

This Garmin unit was intended to replace/supplement an older Magellan unit. Both units have “lifetime” map updates with traffic alerts. It seemed the Garmin maps were a little more accurate or more up to date, based on a trial drive. Where the Garmin outperformed the Magellan seemed to be in its voice directions. Where the Magellan would simply say “at the next intersection turn right” and prompt the turn with a musical “ding-ding,” the Garmin unit says something like “turn right at the stop sign,” and darned if there wasn’t a stop sign at the intersection, just like the unit said. But for the traffic alerts, the Garmin unit only issues a mild tone if the driver exceeds the posted speed limit (and shows the speed highlighted in red, which requires the driver to look at the unit) whereas the Magellan unit says “Warning!” followed by a sharp “ding,” so it really catches your attention without needing to look at the screen. The Garmin unit does have a slot on the back for a microSD memory card to store route information, and according to the manufacturer the unit can also be used as a display screen when driving in reverse using a proprietary backup camera (expensive). For its points of interest data, Garmin uses TripAdvisor while the Magellan uses AAA. Destinations can be entered using address or a point of interest for either unit. As of now, the wimpy traffic alert for the Garmin keeps it from totally replacing the Magellan.

This sleek, yet spacious, over-the-range microwave looks beautiful in any kitchen. Its large display is brightly lit with a clean, ice-blue color for elegance and easy reading. This stainless steel microwave features intuitive controls and a variety of auto cook presets that save you time while preparing meals. It even features an Eco Mode that reduces energy consumption so you can save money, too.

Basic microwave, sophisticated appearance but dim

This over-the-range microwave is a basic microwave without too many fancy features found on higher-end models. It does come with a two-speed fan and two-level cooking light. The fan, used in ductless mode, directs air through the back and out the top front of the microwave, and is quite adequate for the job. However, the incandescent cooking light is very dim, even at the “high” setting. Another feature that is dim on this microwave does not use power, but could have benefitted from a design change. The touch keypad to use the microwave has thin lettering and numbers on a black overlay and is virtually invisible in a darkened kitchen at night. (Our previous countertop microwave had black numbers and letters on a white background and could very easily be seen in the same light conditions.) One can learn to find the cooking light key since it’s on the bottom row, but since that light is so dim it’s no help to see the rest of the keypad. Perhaps this keypad could have benefitted from thicker and more contrasty numbers and letters, or better yet a backlight feature. As noted, this Samsung microwave is very basic. It has 1000 watts of power, selectable in 10 power levels. The interior is rated at 1.6 cu. ft., which is quite spacious, but the glass turntable is only 11.5 inches in diameter, rather small for a microwave this size. Installation seems standard for an OTR microwave, but in our case, the range hood that it replaced had been hard-wired into an opening in the backsplash area. I had to disconnect the range hood, seal the backsplash, cut an opening in the back of the cabinet above the installation area, reconnect the wires to an outlet (I chose a GFCI outlet), fasten the outlet into the back of the cabinet, and then plug the microwave into that outlet (after drilling a hole in the bottom of the cabinet. The microwave hangs on a bracket against the backsplash connecting to the lower edge of the microwave, and by two large screws on either side of the top front of the microwave. Opening the microwave door requires a forceful pull of the oversize, metal-clad handle. The microwave is quite basic, but the stainless steel front lends at least an appearance of sophistication to the kitchen.

Entry-level multi-use hybrid

This hybrid Windows laptop has the fancy new features as hinted in its “x360” name. Its screen can fold over backwards and be used as a tablet, or it can be placed keyboard down with screen slightly raised to be used in “stand” mode, or it can be viewed in “tent” mode in which the screen image flips upside down and the device rests on the open edges of the screen and the keyboard. It also has a touchscreen, Windows 8.1 64-bit operating system, 1 USB 3.0 port, 2 USB 2.0 ports, an HDMI port (no VGA), a quad-core 2.16 GHZ Pentium processor, less than an inch thick, about 2.8 lbs., and comes with 4GB DDR3 RAM (upgradeable to 8GB) and a 500GB hard drive. These specs look attractive until one looks at the other specs that some users and reviewers have complained about: 2-cell li-ion battery, and a mediocre 1366x768 display. Also, this laptop does not have any version of Office, so if someone is looking at this machine for productivity, they’ll have to purchase, transfer or download some kind of office suite. The 2-cell battery gives this laptop a mobile life of about 4 to 4.5 hours, and the main complaint about the screen is that it is relatively low-contrast. Some reviewers have even complained that when this laptop is folded in tablet mode, there is a half-inch overlap of the keyboard to the screen. I personally didn’t like the placement of the AC port (upper right of keyboard in conventional mode) and the type of plug (90-degree) used by the adapter, and the port and the plug are not interchangeable with other HP laptops. In actual use, I found the half-inch overlap in tablet mode to be beneficial in holding the device because it serves as a grippable edge and your fingers of the supporting hand don’t have to curl around onto the tablet screen. Also, the AC plug and port placement seem logical in tablet mode (though would you use it in tablet mode while plugged into an AC outlet?). As for the screen, it is tolerable and I have watched a movie on it (using a USB DVD player). And being a touchscreen, the user can enlarge the image using fingers if necessary. Another complaint I have (or perhaps this is a “getting used to” aspect) is that using the HDMI port and an adapter to project images through a standard VGA projector requires the projector to be moved maybe 10 feet further back to achieve the same projected screen image size. Overall, this machine is an entry step into the world of hybrid laptops that with touchscreens that can fold over and be used as tablets. Similar machines with larger displays, longer battery life, and faster processors will cost several hundred dollars more than this one and be heavier. HP ought to at least offer a replacement battery with a longer life.

great price-value combination

The M325 is the third identical Logitech mouse we had purchased (the other two were from another retailer), because it’s a great bang for the buck. The mouse has an on-off switch that competing models that are more expensive don’t have, and the Logitech USB dongle works with multiple (up to six) devices (though of course the devices have to be made by Logitech). That has become an important consideration as this wireless mouse uses up one USB port for itself and there are so many USB devices out there. Anyway, the mouse works fine and can wake up a sleeping computer. It was just plug in the dongle and the mouse was immediately detected and working. It uses one “AA” battery that Logitech says will last 18 months (which is longer than the competition.) The red mouse that we purchased from Best Buy was somehow priced a couple dollars more than identical-model mice that were a different color. A salesman was able to take those couple dollars off at the time of purchase, which deserves a “thank you.”

What's great about it: long battery life; multi-function dongle
What's not so great: perhaps too sensitive?
