Great chops & heavy themes but vocals are too much
on May 7, 2016

I have to say that I should have heard more from this band, specifically the vocals, before purchasing this CD. I like interesting progressive metal, which this certainly falls under. Also, the themes are cerebral and heavy, which I appreciate (the title alone implies serious pondering of "the eternal"). Even the cover-art is quite interesting and beautiful looking. But there's a point at which the screaming vocals are just too much to listen to. I get the vocal illustration of "angst" in the screaming vocals. But I suppose it just comes down to a matter of taste. This is still a band of "musicians", and I want more melody in the music - and throughout it (especially in the vocals). It's just my preference - a la the progressive-metal giants "Dream Theater", or more recent newcomers, "Intervals". I could have tolerated it more if the screaming/growling vocal was traded off, from time to time, with a singing vocal (a la "We Came As Romans" or "Demon Hunter"). But it doesn't. So even though the band can play for sure, with outstanding chops, unless you prefer the dominance of screaming lead vocals, you may tire of listening to these songs. This style of vocalizing is so prominent, I have to give this CD two stars. It's that prominent.

Worth the purchase if you like the instrumentals
on May 7, 2016

Verified Purchase:Yes
Since this is a re-issue of a wildly popular 70's Sabbath record, the value of the "re-purchase" (at the "deluxe price") is in the booklet of classic vintage photos, extensive (and highly informative) liner notes, and the bonus-disc. I thought more of the value would be in the bonus-disc of instrumental versions of each song (though one song is originally an instrumental anyway), and that was the reason I was intrigued enough to purchase this re-release. However, upon listening, it became apparent that the "instrumentals" are merely just the original recordings, sans the vocals. It's obvious, when you listen, that these are not specially-recorded instrumental "takes", but just the master-tapes of the original recordings transferred to CD without Ozzy's vocals. The absence of the lead melody, where Ozzy's voice would normally be, is an apparent void and it sticks out like a sore thumb. Though it is initially interesting to hear the sound of the songs without vocals to get a real idea of what the band sounded like behind Ozzy, please be reminded that the "instrumental" tracks are not really "instrumental versions" of each song. There is a big difference between the two. So, though "Paranoid" is still one of the finest records Black Sabbath ever made, the bonus-disc in this re-issue is not as enduring a "bonus" as you may think and that's the reason I gave this re-release 3 stars instead of 4. (The booklet of extensive liner-notes and the vintage photos a plus though.)

Good, mostly 70's sounding hard-rock vibe
on April 9, 2016

If you like Zeppelin-esque, MC5-ish, bold-sounding, 70's analog hard-rock, this one is a gold mine. Bandleader and songwriter Andrew Stockdale obviously has a deep affection for this sound and his earnestness in producing a string of records in this vein lends itself to being listener-appreciated. Though some of the instrumentation slightly veers away from this, it's still predominantly at the heart of the work. I gave it 3 stars because I would like to hear a little more experimentation from Wolfmother at this point (70's style experimentation is fine, but experimentation nonetheless). My favorite track on the record presently is "City Lights".

Challenging progressive metal
on March 19, 2016

Verified Purchase:Yes
This is one of a two-part release by this progressive-metal trio. It's still hard to believe that such a full sound is coming from only three guys. But they're all more than proficient on their instruments and that makes much of this possible. Though I'm not a fan of some of the screaming vocals, there are the usual odd-time signatures, atmospheric passages and heavy-metal dynamics, that I do like to hear, and they are still in abundance here. Simply put, if you like challenging progressive metal, this CD will not disappoint. The bonus DVD documentary is also a big plus.

A welcome addition for AWK fans
on March 19, 2016

This coupling of two classic Andrew WK discs (including one that was previously released only in Japan), is an over-the-top reminder of how endearingly off-the-wall AWK was (and probably still is). Rock & roll and a great sense of humor were never meant to be mutually exclusive, and here the two are inextricably bound. Because of the combined length of these two records, it takes some time to listen all the way through. But there is an array of many different sounds here, and no one type of sound throughout. A welcome addition for AWK fans, a fasten-your-seatbelt ride for those unaccustomed to this artist.

Interesting rock & roll and very "live" sounding.

More bands like this should be business right now. The songwriting is good and band rocks like a train about to fall of the rails. But somehow they manage to keep it together and offer some sonic surprises (sort of Iodine meets Black Crowes meets the Replacements). An American garage-rock sound, if I had to categorize them. But a bit more than that.

Interesting listen for Hendrix fans, but that's it
on March 19, 2016

This is an interesting glimpse into the the history of Jimi Hendrix, in his "pre-Experience" days. But as one can infer from the CD cover, this recording shows Hendrix "the sideman", serving the songwriting and singing of Curtis Knight . There are no mind-blowing guitar solos here. The selling draw here is still obviously Hendrix, because of the history he made later on his own. Also, if you're a fan of early-mid Sixties rock & roll, in the vein of Stax Records, it's a fine listen. However, some of the songwriting has something to be desired. And again, it's more of a Hendrix curiosity than anything else at this time.

Honest music done in a genuine way
on March 19, 2016

In the current mainstream of predominantly radio-driven pop/country music, which is often full of cliched lyrics and homogeneous arrangements, Joey & Rory are a refreshing throwback to traditional country/bluegrass songwriting, delivered in a genuine, and often poignant, way. This collection of traditional hymns, reflective of their strong faith, only features a couple of their own heartfelt originals. But the "covers" are still delivered in the genuine and poignant way that are typical of Joey & Rory, including some surprises in tempo on a few numbers. The playing is top-knotch and the singing is emotive and edifying. Highly recommended.

Interesting listen, even if this isn't your music

I listen to many different types of music. Even though electronic music doesn't make up a very substantial portion of my music collection, I still found this disc to be an interesting listen. Artists of any genre will grab the attention of listeners of other genres, so long as they are staying true to their art. There's always something that comes through when this is occurring, and I believe it occurs on this disc.

This record showcases many collaborations that Norah Jones has made over the years, in her consistently excellent career. She never sounds forced or out-of-place in any of the variety of musical situations on which she contributes. A great listen for any true music lover!
