One Device to Rule Them All!
on October 12, 2018

I don't like to spend a lot of time preparing food for dinner. I either pop a TV dinner into the microwave or I go out to eat. On rare occasions, I have prepared chicken in my air fryer because it's so easy - chop up the chicken, throw it in the air fryer and set the timer. Not bad, but not the must thrilling taste sensation.
I thought about what else I could do to make dinner interesting and then I saw the Ninja Foodi. This thing does everything. It's a pressure cooker, it steams, it sears and sautés, it bakes and roasts, it dehydrates , it broils and it air crisps. I decided to try my hand at cooking so I followed the beginner recipe in the included book and made the Herb-Roasted Chicken. It wasn't that difficult. I prepared all the ingredients and followed the instructions and in about an hour I had a delicious roasted chicken. Of course the recipes are designed to serve 2-4 people so I ate half and have another half for dinner tonight.
Cleanup was a breeze. The pot and basket come out for washing as does the pressure lid. I should mention that it is a removable lid that you put on for pressure cooking and the attached lid is for air crisping. You can also leave the lids off for searing or sautéing (I'll try that when I'm more proficient at cooking). It also comes with a reversible rack for steaming vegetables or broiling meat.
The only down side of the Ninja Foodi is it's size. It's large! Almost twice as large as my previous Air Fryer. You'll need at least 18 inches of counter space including the lid when open. Of course it will fit a larger chicken or whatever but I don't have a lot of counter top and it filled up the entire available space.
Other than it's size, the device is wonderful with it's large readout that I can see from the next room and it's touch panel with LEDs to show you the modes it's in. I can't wait to try my next recipe.
Who knew it was this easy to cook!

Great Sound
on September 20, 2018

I am not an audiophile by any means. Having grown up in an age of transistor radios and phonographs, sound was always OK. Sure I have all the latest electronic gadgets but when it comes to sound, cheap Bluetooth speakers have always been good enough. I had to buy a Bluetooth speaker for my computer group and I bought a $60 one that I felt was good enough. Now that I got this Ultimate Ears Megaboom 3, I realize just how bad the club's speaker is. Of course, you get what you pay for and I realize I should be paying more attention to the sound quality. I brought the Megaboom 3 to my club and ran the same audio on both the speakers. The Megaboom 3 sounded so rich and full with a deep bass and the other speaker sounded muffled and flat in comparison. The Megaboom 3 is virtually the same size as the original Amazon Echo and just slightly larger than my Contigo travel coffee mug.
Connecting my iPhone, iPad and Macintosh to the Megaboom 3 with Bluetooth was almost immediate. Many other devices I have tried to connect over the years took up to 30 seconds to connect. There are only 3 buttons on the top of the Megaboom 3. One button turns it on and off, one starts the Bluetooth paring and the large button in the middle lets you tap once o play and pause, 2 taps skips a song, a 2 second press will go to the next playlist you added to their app and if you hold another 2 seconds it will advance to the next playlist. The app lets has an equalizer as well as playlist control and lets you pair multiple Megabooms in party mode. The front of the cylinder has 2 volume buttons disguised as a + (cross) and a - (hyphen) . As a friend said, when he saw the cross on the front, he thought the speaker was a religious candle. I decided to try the Megaboom 3 in my backyard where I have always used a pair of Yamaha speakers mounted on the wall connected to my hot tub. The sound from the Yamahas was always OK but when I played the Megaboom 3 speaker I couldn't believe the difference. The sound was so much better and clearer and had way deeper bass and I can just carry it outside and place it down whenever I go in the back yard. The speaker is waterproof but I would rather not put it in the hot tub as who knows how the heat might affect it.
The manual says you get 20 hours on a charge. I haven't kept it on that long so far but to charge it there is a rubber flap that opens to reveal a Micro-USB port. Ultimate Ears says they are coming out with a charging base that you would just rest the speaker on to charge it but it's not available as of this writing.
I love the rich deep sound of this speaker that I find myself listening to old favorites and hearing new things in the songs that I have never heard before.

A Stitch in Time...

So far, I've always been lucky when there was a power hit, I wasn't actively using the computer. I would turn the computer back on and my drives were still OK and I didn't lose anything. Some of my unfortunate friends and clients haven't been so lucky as they were working on their computers and not only lost the documents they spent hours working on but a few had their hard drives trashed due to it writing to the drive at the time of the hit. I figured that could happen to me so I decided it was time to get a UPS. As we use APC UPS's at work, I know they have been around forever and their products can be trusted.
This unit, the Back-UPS Pro 1350VA can handle a lot of devices at the same time. There are 5 battery backed up outlets with surge protection as well as 5 surge protected outlets as well. There is Ethernet surge protection to go between your cable modem and router and a USB and Serial Data port that lets you connect to your computer and when using the PowerChute software (Windows Only) it will automatically save your work before shutting down your PC. When power comes back, it will restart your PC. There are even 2 USB jacks on the front of the device to let you charge your cell phones and can even charge them when the device is running on battery. If you ever had a long blackout, you could charge your phone multiple times.
The display gives you a lot of information such as the battery and load capacity, error messages such as overloading the device and it will even let you know when it's time to replace the batteries. Speaking of batteries, there are 2 12V batteries that are easy to replace, just slide the panel off the side, disconnect the red and black wires pull the batteries out and replace them with new ones.
If you don't have a UPS, I would suggest you get one now as you never know when power will

I'm Finally Getting Rid of Paper Documents
on August 25, 2018
Posted by: Cueball2000
from Clifton, NJ
I've had many flat bed scanners over the years but this is the first time I have an automatic sheet feeding scanner. I have tons of paper document that have accumulated over the years. Most of the time I have no need of them but every once in a while I need to find out how much I paid for something or what company I used to renovate my bathroom. I usually have to spend hours going through boxes of old paperwork because I just threw my receipts, statements and assorted notes into boxes with no order whatsoever. I tried scanning in the documents many times in the past but when you have to stand over the scanner and lay each sheet down, press scan, wait, flip the page and scan again, it takes so long I gave up after doing a small stack of papers. With this Epson Workforce ES-500WR scanner, I put in a stack of pages, hit scan double scan on the computer and the pages whip through extremely fast. Using the Epson ScanSmart software, I can then rotate or re-order the pages prior to saving them. I can then name the file and create a folder and click save. I have been whipping through the pages extremely quickly. There are many options for saving the scans such as save to a file, save to DropBox, Google Drive, Evernote, Save to Word or Excel, attach it to email, open it in Receipt Manager or print it. I then started scanning in business cards of which I have hundreds. The software OCRs the cards and puts the info into it's address book which you can then export into .vcf or other formats. I did have to check and correct a lot of the info since most of the cards had fancy fonts or photos as backgrounds which would of course throw off any OCR program.
I connected the scanner to my PC using a USB cable (included) but then connected it via WiFi to my Mac, iPad and iPhone. Using the USB was no problem, everything worked fine right out of the box. Connecting it to my Mac was a bit of a problem which is why I took off 1 star. I followed the instructions and could not get it connected. I figured out that I had to run the EpsonNet software to get it to connect to the Mac. Now I can scan to any of my devices depending on my needs.
I will not throw out my originals as you never know when I might need them but I can now pack them away in a box in the basement and never have to open the box unless absolutely necessary.

Best Router Ever

I was using an Apple Airport for the last 4 years and this past year I bought a Ring Video Doorbell 2. Most times when I tried to access the camera remotely or even from inside the house, it rarely connected telling me "Activating Device" and eventually failed. I then tried a D-Link AC router and it worked slightly better than the Airport but still didn't connect every time.I assumed it was the fault of the Ring Doorbell. I figured I would try this Asus AC2600 Router and see if it worked better. Wow! Am I ever glad I did. I am now able to connect to the Ring each and every time without fail. I have been testing it from all over just to see if it connects and it has never not connected. With the amount of devices I have on my network such as Echos, Google Homes, computers, etc. I am glad I found a router that can handle the job so well.

Comfortable to Work With
on June 22, 2018
Posted by: Cueball2000

I've had many drawing tablets over the years from a large 12x12 inch Sumagraphics tablet to a small 4x5 inch tablet. The one thing I never liked about those was the wire connecting the tablet to the computer. This Wacom-Intuos tablet connects to the computer using Bluetooth so goodbye wire. It's got a nice smooth feel to it so it's comfortable to hold, lean back in my chair and edit my photographs with it and not be tethered to my computer. The software has a lot of options for setting the speed, touch, workspace area, etc. There is an option to use the tablet as a mouse or as a tablet whichever you feel comfortable with. You can set the entire pad to draw with or just a portion. The tablet has a power switch and 4 configurable buttons that can be set to do whatever you need such as run a program, set clicks or keystrokes, use it for navigation like zooming, etc. The pen is comfortable in the hand, has 2 configurable buttons for things like a right click or scroll and the tip is of course used as a left click for drawing. The pen unscrews to reveal 3 additional tips should you wear out the tip. There is a cloth band at the top of the tablet to hold the pen when you are not using it.
The tablet comes with your choice of 2 out of three free applications: Corel AfterShot 3, Painter Essentials 6 or Clip Studio Paint Pro.
All in all a nice little tablet which is so much easier to draw with than using a bar of soap, I mean a mouse.

A camera for people with family
on June 10, 2018
Posted by: Cueball2000
from Clifton, NJ
The GoogleClips camera is made for people with kids, family, friends, all of which I don't have. I have plenty of video cameras, iPhone, iPad, etc. If I want to shoot a video, I like to have complete control of what I am shooting. This camera is for people who don't want to think about what they are shooting but just want a keepsake of the event. Since I work in a school, I wouldn't dare shoot videos of the kids so I had to wait until I went to a trade show the other day. I attached the camera to my t-shirt, turned it on and walked around the show. I had no idea what it was capturing the entire time. People I stopped to talk to were nowhere to be found on the video but other people I never paid attention to were. I sat through a lecture and forgot to shut the camera off and filled up almost the entire memory with the guest speaker walking back and forth. Since the camera doesn't capture audio, I deleted almost all of the clips of him. I wound up with some usable footage, some I had to edit out since it captured my hands in front of the camera at times and other clips were unusable due to me walking and the camera shaking side to side. I was able to transfer the clips to my iPhone and then transfer the clips to my Macintosh. I edited the 7 second clips into one video, cut out the unusable footage, added music and titles and created a short but decent video. The quality of the video is excellent at 1080p and the lens is very sharp. To transfer the video to the iPhone, I only had to run the app and agree to connect to the camera and all the clips imported with no other help from me. It's not a hidden camera since there are flashing LED lights on the front so anyone can see it's doing something but considering I was at a photo expo, nobody even asked me what the little white box with the blinking lights was.
If you have a family and have parties often, it could be a lot of fun. I suppose it could come in handy if I go to a party but otherwise it will probably be sitting on my shelf more than I will be using it.
I would post the video here but since it was shot at another business, it wouldn't be right to advertise the other store on Best Buy's site.

It Works Every Time
on June 2, 2018
Posted by: Cueball2000
from Clifton, NJ
I have been automating all the lights in my house for some time now. I use a variety of different plugs and switches to give me voice control using the Amazon Echo, the Google Assistant and Siri as well. Most of the other switches gave me problems either setting them up or working properly when called upon. This TP-Link Switch connected with no problems following the instructions in the app. The app asks you what color wires do you have in the wall and when you enter the information it shows you a diagram based on your wires. I followed the diagram and connected both switches. Once both switches were in place, following the directions it was easy to get it set up on my WiFi. Now that I was able to switch the lights on and off using the app, it was time to set them up to work with Alexa and Google. I once again followed the instructions and got them both working on both. I like to have both of them since every once in a while one of them doesn't work for some reason and rather than trip over things in the dark to get to the switch I can always use the other one.
I am using these switches to control the light in my kitchen which has a fluorescent tubes fixture. Since you can't control fluorescent lights with this switch, I bought 2 LED tubes (only $7 a tube) that fit right into the fixture and now the switches work perfectly.
One thing I should mention is that the plastic box on the back of the switch is slightly wider than the old switch that I had in my hallway switch box. In a single, modern switch box like in the kitchen there was no problem but the hallway box has a second switch that controls the basement light. This was an old steel box that has steel tabs on the top right and bottom left for screwing in a steel cover. This was the wrong box as this kind of box is used for outlets rather than switches but it was put in when the house was built about 70 years ago. Unable to fit the switch in properly, I had to wedge it in at a slight angle to fit it into the box. The switch plate cover wouldn't fit now so I had to file out the openings to make it fit. Unless someone really examined it carefully, no one would notice it but it was a little annoying trying to get the switch into the box.
Since I got the switches installed they have worked flawlessly. When I notice I left the kitchen light on, a simple "Alexa turn off the kitchen" shuts them off. I'm that much closer to getting my entire house voice controlled!

Great Quality Video
on May 12, 2018
Posted by: Cueball2000
from Clifton, NJ
I've tried a few dash cams in the past and found the quality to be unusable. This dash cam has extremely sharp 1080p video. I thought the video would be shaky as I was driving, but the motion is very smooth and fluid reminiscent of the Hyperlapse App. The video at night is bright and details are clear. The rear camera is only 640x480 but still good enough for viewing. The cam is well made and doesn't feel flimsy. I bought a 64Gb High Endurance Micro SD Card which will give me 10 hours of 1080p video or 12 hours of 720p video. I thought installing the wires around the car for power and the rear camera would be tough but using the little tool they included made the installation a breeze.
One problem I found is when using the adhesive mount that comes with the cam, the screen is dark due to the angle of the screen. If you bend down and look up at it, it is normal brightness. I contacted the company to find out if there is a way to brighten the screen and was told that the screen was not intended to be viewed while driving. That makes using the rear view camera really worthless. My solution was to buy the suction cup mount from Rexing and then I was able to adjust the angle of the camera and the screen so I could view the screen when backing up.
All in all, I am very happy with this dash cam.

Nice Clean Floors Again!
on April 21, 2018
Posted by: Cueball2000
from Clifton, NJ
As a single guy who rarely has anyone over, I tend to not bother with things like cleaning the floors. Yes, I let my Shark Robot Vacuum run around every week and pick up the dust but I tend to forget to mop the floors. You know it's time to mop when you bounce a ball on the floor and it sticks. Well it wasn't quite that bad but it did have some sticky spots. I always found it a pain to fill a bucket with water, add some cleaning solution to it and drag it around the rooms trying not to bump into it while mopping.
This Bissell SpinWave Cordless Powered Mop made the job easy and the floors are nice and clean again. The mop is easy to maneuver, it turns on a dime and is pretty light weight. The spray bottle pulls out for filling and the lines on the bottle made it easy to add the right amount of cleaning fluid to the water. The mop comes with 2 sets of cleaning pads, soft touch pads for light mopping and scrubby pads for seriously sticky floors. It also came with two 8 ounce bottles of multi surface cleaning solution. It came with a storage tray for storing the mop and the tray helps you re-align the pads after you've removed the dirty pads and washed and dried them.Of course it also came with a power adapter to charge the mop. The blue indicators on the front of the mop let you know how much charge is left. Charging takes 4 hours for a full charge.
The only problem I found is due to the size of the cleaning heads, I couldn't get it between my tub and my toilet. If it were slightly smaller, it would have fit, but it wasn't that big a deal.
Knowing how easy it is now to clean my floors, I will probably have clean floors way more often.

I'm planning to purchase this machine. Do I need to install anti-virus? What are the pros & cons?

It comes with a 30 day trial of McAfee Live Safe and will then require a subscription. As an IT professional, I recommend not using any snti-virus outside of the Microsoft Defender that is included in Windows 10. No anti-virus is 100% perfect and when you depend on an anti-virus to keep you safe, you do stupid things like opening attachments from strangers or clicking on links in emails or websites and feel you are 100% protected. The hackers trying to get you are creating new malware threats faster than the anti-virus companies can keep up with them. The only way to be safe is to be careful what you do online yourself.

Throw away your extra remotes in favor of the Logitech Harmony 665 remote control. This functional remote works with a range of devices, from basic cable to Apple TV, and can combine up to 10 remotes in one versatile unit. This Logitech Harmony 665 remote control offers one-button setup for easy incorporation with your entertainment system.

I don't see this model (Harmony 665) listed anywhere but at Best Buy. Is this a special version of the 650 just for Best Buy? Or is it an old discontinued model?

I saw it in the store and it's on the website - https://www.bestbuy.com/site/searchpage.jsp?st=logitech+665&_dyncharset=UTF-8&id=pcat17071&type=page&sc=Global&cp=1&nrp=&sp=&qp=&list=n&af=true&iht=y&usc=All+Categories&ks=960&keys=keys
