Best Lock Ever
on May 27, 2019

When I bought my house 18 years ago, it came with a standard key lock. I replaced that with a biometric lock that opened with my fingerprint. Not great in the winter when wearing gloves or sweaty fingers in the summer. When it stopped working, the company replaced it with another one that now claimed to work with WiFi when you added a WiFi module. Unfortunately they never made one for that model. I then got the Yale/Nest lock which worked using an app on the iPhone but not with Siri or the Apple Watch so I could pull out the phone, swipe to open it, find the app and press it, then click on the little house icon and then when the next screen opened, I could press and hold for 3 seconds to finally open the door. What an ordeal. I found it simpler to just key in the combination on the touch screen of the lock to open the door.
This Yale Assure Lock solves the problem. It has an Apple Watch app that when tapped opens the lock and is secure since the Apple Watch is linked to the iPhone. It could work with my Amazon Echo but I choose not to link it to that since someone would be able to open the door from the outside just by screaming "Alexa Open the Door". It also works with the Google Assistant but Google was smart and only allows the locking of the door, not opening it. I set up the lock using the best feature ever, geofencing.
This lock uses WiFi to know when you and your phone have gone a certain distance from your home so the door remains locked but then uses Bluetooth to automatically unlock the door when you come back into Bluetooth range. I no longer have to mess with the app or the Apple Watch or be a primitive and use a key!
If I was away and needed to open the door for someone, I could always use the August app or the Apple Watch app to open the lock remotely.
The lock was simple to install since it was the same exact size as all previous locks. I watched the video that they prepared using the Built app that I had to install and that explained everything I needed to know about installing the lock and also a little module that connects adjacent to the lock to signal you if your door is left ajar after a set amount of time. My previous locks never had that feature so I needed information about that.
This smart lock has made my smart home even smarter.

Made of Vibranium? Or just as expensive?
on March 28, 2019

from Clifton
All my pots and pans were handed down to me from my mother and probably from her mother so needless to say they were really old. The last time I needed to use one, I looked at how scratched and corroded it was and decided it was time to get some new ones. When I read the description of this Calphalon cookware set I decided that rather than buy some cheap set that would look bad after a few years, I decided to go with the best so it would last me the rest of my life. It seems like these pots are made of Vibranium with Adamantium handles as they are so heavy and sturdy (they could be used to fight an Infinity War). The handles barely get hot so they can be lifted without a pot holder. For such a well made product of course you have to pay more for them as they are expensive but you'll never need to replace them, ever!
The set includes an 8" & 10" frying pans, a 2.5 & 3.5 quart sauce pan with glass covers, a 3 quart saute pan with a cover and a 6 quart stock pot with a cover. They stack together to save 30% space.
They really look nice in my kitchen and I can finally get rid of my old hand-me-downs.

Don't Yank it out or You'll Lose It!

The SanDisk - Ultra Fit 128GB Flash Drive is TINY! It's called UltraFit because it's barely sticks out from your laptop so you can slip your laptop into your bag and you don't have to remove it. Try doing that with a standard USB flash drive. It's not the kind of drive you want to carry in your pocket as you will lose it. It's made to be additional storage for your notebook rather than a drive to carry spare files in. Yes you obviously can copy files to it and use it to transfer the files to another computer but when you pull it out of your notebook get a good grip on it or you might fling it across the room as you pull it out. It has a small loop on it that you can attach a small strap or even hang it on a chain if you really want to.
The drive is pretty fast as it does have a USB 3.1 interface. It says on the package that the drive has a read speed of up to 130 Mb per second and write speed is lower based on the host device. I transferred 190 files (34.8Gb) to the drive in 26.30 minutes and then read from the drive back to the computer in 15:21 minutes. Not bad for such a large amount of files but remember your speed will vary depending on your computer and operating system.
They include the software for password protecting the drive using 128bit encryption for Windows and a link for downloading the software for the Mac. They also include a free one year subscription for SanDisk's Rescue Pro should your files get corrupted and they give you one free year of online file storage as well.
You really can't go wrong with SanDisk drives, I have been using them for years and they have always worked fine.

A Very Strong Router
on February 10, 2019
Posted by: Cueball2000
from Clifton
I have a number of IOT devices and when my router goes out, Alexa and Google complain like babies "please check your device's connection and power supply". Obviously I wasn't disconnecting my devices a few times a day but for some reason, my routers couldn't keep connected. My original router was an Apple Airport that couldn't connect to the Ring Video Doorbell, 4 feet away from it. I switched to a different router and that connected to the doorbell but then disconnected itself every other time I needed to see who was at my door. I changed the router again and it also lost the connection a few times but did connect to the doorbell. For some reason, it lost connection to the Insignia Speaker with Google Assistant at least once a day. I got a replacement unit from the company and although better, I could not get it to connect to my Insignia Garage Door opener. I tried over and over to get it to connect via HomeKit and no luck. Finally I decided to get this Linksys MR8300 Max Stream Router and the Linksys Velop Mesh WiFi Extender. So far in the past week, I haven't had a disconnect to the speaker, the Ring Cameras connect perfectly and finally I can control my garage door using Siri.
The MR8300 has 4 Gigabit ports, it would have been nice to have more but I plugged in a Gigabit switch to expand my network. With the extender, the mesh system covers every inch of my house and the entire back yard. Wow!
The MR8300 router is a tri-band router but all the IOT devices will only work on the 2.4Ghz band. Although I could connect my smart TV using the other band, I prefer to have it hardwired. Setting up the MR8300 was way easier than my last router (which shall remain nameless). With that one, no matter how I tried to connect using it's web interface, it always gave me an error message wherein I had to call the company and reset the router to factory settings (and we're talking straight out of the box). I unplugged the previous router, plugged in the MR8300 and after a firmware update, it connected immediately to all my devices! I didn't have to reset them, they were automatically recognized. It was great.
This is the first time I have had all my devices working at the same time and haven't heard a complaint from Alexa all week. It's really aggravating when the only way to turn on your lights is with Alexa and it doesn't work but so far, so good, life is wonderful. Great router!

Lot's of Storage in a Small Package
on November 29, 2018

from Clifton, NJ
When I go out to shoot photos with my 36 megapixel Nikon D800, I shoot a lot. So much that I have had to carry multiple 1 TB hard drives to transfer all my files so I can reuse my SD cards. Now with this 4TB portable, I can transfer thousands of photos and videos and still have room for whatever comes along.
This drive is one of the first portables to come with the new USB-C jack so I can use it with my new PC laptop which only has USB-C or with my MacBook Pro (an older model) that only has USB 2.0 by using the cable with adapter plug that came with the drive.
The drive is about 1/2 inch shorter but slightly thicker than my previous portable hard drives. Using the new USB-C interface, the transfer rate is much faster than before.
The design of the drive, not that it matters to the functionality of the drive, is very modern looking with a very professional looking silver cover rather than just a solid black box.
The drive came formatted in the NTFS format but since I use it for both my PC and Mac, I reformatted it to ExFAT so both OSes can read and write to it. The drive comes with software installed on it for both Mac and PC that will help you format the drives and turn on hardware encryption. If you plan on reformatting the drive, remember to copy the software to another drive before formatting this one or you will lose it (you can always download it from the WD website I suppose).
Of course you could always us the drive for your desktop computers as well to backup your internal drives or just use it to store 1000's of photos, music, movies etc. and take them on the road with you for a long vacation.
When I go out on a pro photo shoot, I always carry 2 drives with one backing up the other and carry one in my luggage and one in a pocket or in my car. Just in case something happens to one, I know I will always be able to come back with my valuable photos.

This is one beautiful laptop!
on November 13, 2018

I have to say that this is the most beautiful laptop I have ever seen and I am partial towards MacBooks. The reason I love the look of this notebook is because it doesn't look like a notebook, it looks like a handsome leather portfolio case. If I walked down the street with it under my arm, no one would suspect it was a full blown 8th generation i7 touchscreen laptop.
The fact that it is a 2-in-1 makes it very versatile to use. The screen moves from a standard laptop screen position to a media viewing position to a tablet position very easily. Speaking of tablet, it comes with a 2 button pen stylus that seems to be very accurate. the pen attaches to the side of the notebook in a leather loop and comes with additional nibs. The keyboard is illuminated making it easy to see the black keyboard in dim light. The battery charges very quickly but I haven't drained the battery down enough to see how long it takes to do a full charge from empty.
There are 3 USB-C ports that can be used for charging, flash drives, external hard drives etc. as well as a headphone jack. It came with a USB-A to USB-C adapter so I could use older drives or peripherals such as microphones.
This model came with 8Gb of RAM and a 256Gb SSD which seems pretty fast. The screen is 1920x1080 and is extremely bright. The sound is pretty good as well as the sound fires upward from the bar above the keyboard which is where the heat emanates from as well. Even when the notebook is in tablet mode, the sound and heat comes out the side of the fold since the screen folds over with a gap between itself and the keyboard.
It of course came with a fairly small USB-C charger.
The model I got doesn't have LTE capability but from what I read HP makes a model that can accept a SIM card but that would mean an additional monthly cell line. When I need, I can always use my iPhone as a portable hot spot.
I can't wait to show it off at my camera club and my computer user group as well.

Can't be used as a bedside clock
on November 8, 2018
Posted by: Cueball2000
from Clifton, NJ
I love my Google Voice assistants. I have 3 in various rooms and wanted to use this Google Home Hub next to my bed since it has very large numerals and I could see it without eyeglasses with no problem. We'll get back to my problem in a minute.
The Google Home Hub is slightly larger than a cell phone and has a beautifully clear touch screen. You are able to ask it the same kind of questions you can on the other Google assistants but now it will show you a visualization on the screen. If you ask about a celebrity, it will show you a photo and give you some info on the person. It will show you a few buttons that you can select photos, video, more info, etc. I tried adding objects to my shopping list and for some reason it couldn't hear me. It heard me ask to add to my shopping list and it showed the words as I said them and then had me repeat it 2 more times before saying it can't hear me because there may be too much noise in the background (the room was absolutely silent). The screen will display by Arlo cameras outside my house but not my Ring Video Doorbell. It will show me that my door is locked (Nest x Yale Lock). It displays Youtube videos that you ask for by name or it will suggest videos for you. You can't access other websites as it's not really a browser. It will show you the weather and traffic conditions to work along with a map and buttons to select driving, walking, transit, etc.
If you use the Home Hub in the kitchen, you can have it show you a recipe, list the ingredients, walk you through the preparation and even set a timer for you.
My main problem I find with the device is that it has an always on ambient mode. I don't know about you but when I sleep, it's dark in the room. If I get up in the middle of the night, I would like to turn to the clock and see the time. Well, that can't happen now since the darker the room is, the darker the screen is. The screen is almost totally off when I wake up in the middle of the night and want to see how much more time I have before getting up for work. I've gone through all the settings and searched online for a solution but it seems that Google thinks the ambient light sensor is a feature. There should be a way to adjust the ambient sensor but apparently the developers of the device sleep with the lights on and never realized that the clock gets too dark to see. This could be changed with a software update I'm sure and I suggested that to Google in the feedback section of the app.
Of course I could always use my iPhone, iPad or computer to get this information but it's nice to have an always on device next to your bed if you dreamed of something and wanted to get information on it right away.

DeLonghi Knocks Out Foreman!
on October 27, 2018
Posted by: Cueball2000
from Clifton, NJ
It's a knockout for sure. I've had a few George Foreman grills over the past 20 years and they were OK. To make a hamburger or veggie burger they did the job but I could never make much more with them. They were always set to just one temperature and couldn't be adjusted. I tried making various other sandwiches using them but they always seemed overcooked in some areas and undercooked in others. This DeLonghi - Livenza 5 in 1 Grill let's me adjust the temperature to my liking and let's me use it to make more than just hamburgers.
The grilling plates which can be used to make burgers, chicken, steaks, fish or paninis come off (for easy cleaning) and can be swapped out for griddle plates so I can make eggs or pancakes. The unit can be used in 5 different configurations such as a contact grill for paninis, full grill, full griddle, half griddle or combination half grill and half griddle. The 3 knobs are clearly marked so you know exactly the temperature for the method of cooking you desire. The handle is rubber coated so I never feel the heat of the grill. They included 2 drip cups to catch the grease and fat that drains off the food and a small spatula for flipping the food.
When open, the grill takes up about 18 inches of space so in a small kitchen like mine, I have to move around the pots and pans to give me counter space but with the DeLonghi grill, I can finally ditch my frying pan and skillets.
So far, I have grilled chicken breasts, hamburgers and made a panini and as soon as I finish writing this review, I think I'll make a grilled mac and cheese sandwich. Yum!

Rich Full Sound
on October 23, 2018
Posted by: Cueball2000
from Clifton, NJ
Just like the Marshall amps that you've all seen at any rock show, this Marshall-Stanmore II Voice Wireless Speaker delivers the kind of sound that fills the room and makes you want to keep it on all the time. Unlike most other Alexa speakers you can use the control knobs on top to increase or decrease the treble, bass or volume. Of course there's an app as well with an equalizer with 6 presets or you can customize the sound manually. The knobs on the top are surrounded by LEDs whose brightness can be controlled via the app as well.
Alexa works just as you would expect answering your questions, controlling your IOT devices and of course playing music from your Amazon music library, iHeart Radio, TuneIn and Spotify if you have a premium account. I was unable to play anything from Pandora.
A few downsides to this speaker is that you can't change the wakeword like you can on other Alexa devices. You are stuck with "Alexa", no "Echo", "Amazon" or "Computer". Another thing you can't do is include the device into a group. I haven't tried any routines or skills on it yet but it should be able to do it.
The speaker connects easily to bluetooth so I can always pair it to my iPhone or iPad to play other music sources. One feature the speaker has that other devices don't have is an Aux in and RCA jacks on the back to plug into a larger system if you wanted.
Overall, the sound quality makes up for those few shortcomings I mentioned and with a speaker this large, that is the most important thing.

One Device to Rule Them All!
on October 12, 2018
Posted by: Cueball2000
from Clifton, NJ
I don't like to spend a lot of time preparing food for dinner. I either pop a TV dinner into the microwave or I go out to eat. On rare occasions, I have prepared chicken in my air fryer because it's so easy - chop up the chicken, throw it in the air fryer and set the timer. Not bad, but not the must thrilling taste sensation.
I thought about what else I could do to make dinner interesting and then I saw the Ninja Foodi. This thing does everything. It's a pressure cooker, it steams, it sears and sautés, it bakes and roasts, it dehydrates , it broils and it air crisps. I decided to try my hand at cooking so I followed the beginner recipe in the included book and made the Herb-Roasted Chicken. It wasn't that difficult. I prepared all the ingredients and followed the instructions and in about an hour I had a delicious roasted chicken. Of course the recipes are designed to serve 2-4 people so I ate half and have another half for dinner tonight.
Cleanup was a breeze. The pot and basket come out for washing as does the pressure lid. I should mention that it is a removable lid that you put on for pressure cooking and the attached lid is for air crisping. You can also leave the lids off for searing or sautéing (I'll try that when I'm more proficient at cooking). It also comes with a reversible rack for steaming vegetables or broiling meat.
The only down side of the Ninja Foodi is it's size. It's large! Almost twice as large as my previous Air Fryer. You'll need at least 18 inches of counter space including the lid when open. Of course it will fit a larger chicken or whatever but I don't have a lot of counter top and it filled up the entire available space.
Other than it's size, the device is wonderful with it's large readout that I can see from the next room and it's touch panel with LEDs to show you the modes it's in. I can't wait to try my next recipe.
Who knew it was this easy to cook!

I'm planning to purchase this machine. Do I need to install anti-virus? What are the pros & cons?

It comes with a 30 day trial of McAfee Live Safe and will then require a subscription. As an IT professional, I recommend not using any snti-virus outside of the Microsoft Defender that is included in Windows 10. No anti-virus is 100% perfect and when you depend on an anti-virus to keep you safe, you do stupid things like opening attachments from strangers or clicking on links in emails or websites and feel you are 100% protected. The hackers trying to get you are creating new malware threats faster than the anti-virus companies can keep up with them. The only way to be safe is to be careful what you do online yourself.

Throw away your extra remotes in favor of the Logitech Harmony 665 remote control. This functional remote works with a range of devices, from basic cable to Apple TV, and can combine up to 10 remotes in one versatile unit. This Logitech Harmony 665 remote control offers one-button setup for easy incorporation with your entertainment system.

I don't see this model (Harmony 665) listed anywhere but at Best Buy. Is this a special version of the 650 just for Best Buy? Or is it an old discontinued model?
