Verified Purchase:Yes
Here is a layman's description for a professional product
.[ Direct Drive ]-benefit....No belt drives that will, over time, slip or break and need replacing. Plays at constant speed.
[ Counter-balance ] -benefit....chose a different cartridge/stylus and set balance to avoid skips, even on new albums. also, lighten weight of the tip of stylus/needle to avoid excessive heat generated at tip. This warps or stretches the groove with over a thousand degrees of heat from pressure centered at the very tip of the needle. Record should not be re-played within a 24 hour period, this allows the groove to return to it's original shape producing greater fidelity.:i.e.- keeps the record from wearing out too quickly.
[ Anti-skating ]-benefit....stops tone arm from sliding across the LP and insures correct tracking, in the groove.
[ removable shell-head ]-benefit...keep different stylus shapes installed and quickly changes out for different types of music.(requires extra phono/cartridge with stylus) (has place on T.T. to keep ready)
[ Forward/Reverse control ]-benefit....play record forwards or backwards.
[ Pitch control slider ]-benefit...speed up the record or slow it down to match beats per minute during segue-way.
[Tone arm platform ]-benefit... can elevate tone arm at pivot point for various record thickness.(or warping)
[ Cue arm ]-benefit.... brings up the needle and drops the needle slowly avoiding damage
[Main power control]-benefit...... sends power thru system.
[platter power control]-benefit....starts turntable platter spinning(full-speed) and stops it almost to a dead stop
[Three (3) R.P.M. speeds]-benefit.... can play 33 1/3, 45's and 78's.
[Stacked strobe markings]-benefit....shows visual indicator that table is spinning at exact speed or if it is faster or slower.
[Recess target light]-benefit.....shines light across record to help find track separations, turns off and pushes down to get out of the way.
[45 adaptor]-.......place on center spindle to seat 45's with large center holes.
[USB cable]-.......run directly into USB port on computer for vinyl to digital conversions
[RCA plugs reduced to stereo mini-plug}-benefit.....can plug in without USB port, instead uses microphone input. {includes (2) 1. male RCA's to female mini-plug. 2. male RCA's to male mini-plug. Also this is how turntable is attached to back of stereo amplifier.
[Switch for phono/input line selection]-benefit.......can run into phono jacks (magnetic) or input line:i.e.-AUX
input select.
[Another pitch control]-.....do not know what the use is yet. Will have to study and experiment.
[Audacity software]-benefit....professional audio engineering software for converting analog sound to .WAV files then export to .MP3 format. Can do mix-downs, half speed mastering and many more that I am not qualified to explain.
[Heavy duty motor]........turntable must weigh 20 to 30 lbs. Solid and steady, well built
[Audio-Technica cartridge and stylus. (AT 96)] included with turntable.
***** This reminds me of the old Technics D.J. turntables, this is what I need to convert old records from the 70's and earlier into MP3 files for music collection. Total price with tax $288.00, had to special order it but worth the wait. Have not had a single album skip, these mainly being used records.
***Highly Recommend if you don't want to spend one to two thousand dollars for a turntable.
Remember to clean dust from album before playing and best if using an anti-static gun or damp cleaning solution. helps keep records from going SNAP, CRACKLE and POP.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Do I also need to purchase a needle?

No, it comes with a cartridge and needle/stylus already mounted to the shellhead. Just place shell head into the end of the tone arm and tighten

Will this work with a regular (1990s) stereo (Analog)?

I am an old timer with records going back into the 60s & 70s. My old turn table has stopped working. Would this turn table work without a PC. I want to keep the sound with my amp/reciever.
Yes it will play the old analog way. Has RCA jacks that can plug into the back of your amp/receiver. Can be used with the phono jack or into a different jack, like AUX.

Do you need to use a separate pre-amp when connecting this turntable to a home theater amp with no dedicated phono input?

Turntable has two settings, one for magnetic phono input and one for Aux. input. You can play this turntable on self powered speakers if you like. One for pre-amp, one for no pre-amp.

Review states no automatic return. Does the arm come up at the end of a record or does it continue to scrape against the record label?

There is no auto-return. Must raise tone arm and lock it back in it's cradle
