Water that refreshes and flows.

A friend turned me on to this musical statement. I listened hurridly the first time through, but then repeated listenings began to take hold. Mr. McHugh is quite a laid back persona musically, but his compositions ring true with real life situations. After I heard the track Music, I was convinced we're kindred spirts. As long as we have music, we will make it. Here's to you McHugh and The Beautiful Girls. "Oh black water keep on rollin"......
What's great about it: Lyrically and sonically sound
What's not so great: I wouldn't bother reviewing it if I didn't think it great!

A pleasant surprise!

I bought this CD after seeing it on more than one best of the year lists and listening to snipets of it at a local retail bookstore. I would almost label it as cerebral, but not quite. Lyrically, it's doesn't remind one of early Paul Simon, but the musical arrangements winding around the lyrics make it very listenable. Not for everyone's musical palate, but if you've read my other reviews and agree, I would then think you'd like this selection. "When I'm Sleepy" although painfully short, is a breathe of fresh air. Dare to be tempted!
What's great about it: laid back brillance
What's not so great: brillance does not mean "not so great"

When You're Screaming

Through my son I met an Iraqi War vet who suffers from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). He's 24! The more I listen to "When You're Falling" I am more convinced this is his theme song. It is so powerful and symbolic my eyes moisten each time I hear it. The whole CD is worth purchasing because of this one track.
What's great about it: Variety
What's not so great: All tracks aren't equally musically expressive

Read a review about his CD and decided to give it a go. Now I listen to it at least once a day. I usually begin my early morning work day getting motivated by Iggy and FB's band of hired hands. Not much that new to be heard here, but the presentations are marvelous. Why have I not heard of any of these performers except Byrne and Dizzee Rascal? Hopefully, there's more of this treasure to be re-mastered and placed on Volume II. Almost immediately I placed this on my top 15 CD's of all time.
What's great about it: mostly 70's piece of musical expression which fits smartly in today's time frame
What's not so great: I don't really find that much that's not so great!!

Red Water Blues
on January 29, 2008

While recently attempting to trade automobiles, I'd taken a CD with me to test the new car's audio system. My salesperson said he liked the track I played. Later, he told me he had a CD he wanted me to hear. Yeap, it was Rehab! I kneeled next to the driver's side (in the bitter cold I might add) listening. The salesman rapped the parts he enjoyed most. It was a revealing glimpse watching someone lose all inhibition and promote his product! I heard enough to want to hear more. Later that week I purchased a car from another dealer (Sorry Matt!), and also purchased this CD at the Jackson TN Best Buy listening to it on the drive back to Memphis. I was impressed. Not only are these guys Southern, they mix personal conviction and everyday life like it's Pepsi and ice cream (an acquired taste!). Each track seemed to flow into the next one. Red Water is chilling. Last Tattoo is an statement of lost love, and hurtful lost love at that. Walk Away is simply delightful. It's an ironic slice of life. You have to root for the guy they're singing about. He turns down an affair only to go home and find his wife in bed with another man! Irony! This I Know is a song we all learned as kids, at least those of us down South. Sitting At A Bar 2006 is the perfect punctuation to the whole CD. Youz guys up North can listen and earn credit for Southern Culture 101 at the same time.
What's great about it: Vocal presentations, lyrics, Southern feel of CD
What's not so great: Few, if any

Best Live Rock n' Roll
on January 17, 2008

I first heard this album (before CD's) in college in a friend's dorm room. I was blown away by Sweet Jane (and still am). The band Reed put together for this live album makes it and makes it good! Heroin is vivid enough to make me never want to know what he's describing. The ultimate live performance is the final track...Rock n' Roll. Watch out for those New York stations! My number 3 album of all time...bar none!
A must...
What's great about it: pull up a seat and listen to the concert
What's not so great: I still don't hear any!

...Just one of the boys...

All The Young Dudes, beginning with Lou Reed's Sweet Jane, still holds its own against any music of the early 70's. This Bowie/Ronson produced diamond was an attempt by Bowie to breathe life back into a band struggling to hold on. He did just that. The title track (written by Bowie), plus One of The Boys to me are MTH's best. I just love the English telephone ringing! Mick Ralphs (later of Bad Company) shines on Ready For Love. This version is much better than Bad Company's. It ends with Sea Diver which is a slow, almost mournful ballad. The remastered version breathes new live into the album/cd with live versions of some of the best tracks. For 30 years ATYD has been on my top 10 albums of all time list.
What's great about it: The classic sound of the early 70's.
What's not so great: none

Slow but steady

Boxer is on several best of 2007 lists as it should be. While never actually breaking into a run the pace of each track ambles between a slow to power walk. As the front of the CD implies, it's a methodical slide into some very interesting subjects. Worth the ride, if you don't want to get there too quickly!
What's great about it: Well thought out and presented collection of songs.
What's not so great: May be a little slow for today's younger listeners.

Summa of Da Beatles
on August 27, 2007

This album released during "The Summer of Love" was and is the best of everything The Beatles are. I brought this album home and listened to it intently. The lyrics were included which was a novelty in those days. I was mesmerized! Everyone else I shared it with was equally impressed. Word images were conjured making the music so vividly surreal. Lucy In The Sky has such great mental images: newspaper taxis, rocky horse people, kaliedescope eyes, looking glass ties. Only Harrison's Within You Without You seems uncomfortably out of place on this masterpiece. As a lad I didn't know exactly what all this marvelous music meant, but it was fascinating to hear and to wonder about. I still judge all music today by this album/cd. It is especialy wonderful through headphones. Has been, and will always be the top of my "Top Ten" list music of all time.
