Powerful, with caveats
on June 10, 2024
Posted by: emiliosic
I've been using home automation systems for quite a while, so I'm familiar with different commercial and open source systems.
The advantage of this dedicated home automation hub is that it can connect to different products from different vendors and technologies, and seamlessly integrate them in very customizable and powerful ways.
The interface on Homey is the best I've seen when it comes to the easy of connecting devices and creating automation flows.
One can create flows by connecting block together (simple automations), which is very intuitive, but more limited. For more advanced setups, the multiple pieces can be connected via lines like in a mind graph, with advance logic including variables, timers, weather and environment data, presence, etc. If this is not enough, then one can directly code in a JavaScript dialect. Yes this option is best left to programmers but it's relatively easy to learn. This is barely required though and the flow based automations are impressive.
When connecting devices, it has radios for Z-Wave 700 (This is their previous generation, since this product was originally launched in early 2023), Zigbee and Thread when used with Matter. It also supports the most common brands that already have established systems. For example, our Ecobee thermostat can be controlled by linking the Ecobee credentials. Our IKEA window treatments can be controlled via the IKEA gateway, which in this case is a direct connection within our home, no internet required.
It also supports some very basic multimedia controls. It can connect to our Sonos speakers, Some of our Amazon Echo speakers (but not all of them), and Chromecast-enabled speakers as well.
It can connect to some security cameras but it doesn't handle video. Instead it uses motion and people/package notifications from the cameras to be used in automations.
For example, if the camera detects movement, and anyone is in the house, it can play an announcement on specific smart speakers, turn a light on, etc.
We have an extensive collection of Z-Wave devices from several different vendors. However many were not directly usable if Homey doesn't have specific support for a particular model, and the generic actions that one can do with an unrecognized device is much more limited than with other controllers, so Homey is best if one sticks to what it's directly supported.
The device itself is a black circle that has no ports except for a single USB-C that's used mainly for power. There is no Ethernet, as this works via Wi-Fi. If one wants to connect it via Ethernet instead, which would be recommended for the most stable connection in a key element of one's home network, requires using an external adapter. Homey sells one and also 3rd party USB-C Ethernet hubs or adapters are supported, or specific PoE adapters.
There is a bright light circle that changes colors in a pattern when on, and uses other fixed colors when initializing or for a fault. The color animation can be turned off from the app.
Homey is initially set up using a phone (via Bluetooth) and once it's running, it can also be managed from a web page.
It also has an infrared remote, so it can control things with an infrared remote control, but it has to be within line of sight of the Homey box, or one would have to add additional satellite home boxes to control IR devices in other rooms. I had no need to use IR controls, as it also can control my older Harmony remote with a hub, although only for basic functions.
For daily control, use either app or web page. It also supports Apple Watch.
It also connects to Alexa and Google Home so with either system one can control lights and other devices. This works very well.
There is currently no official support for Apple Home. There is an experimental support for Apple Home but in my test it was not usable. I wanted to use Apple Home as my main interface since I always carry a phone, but it did not really work.
Another good feature is that it has very nice reports in forms of charts and logs covering everything from movement, to temperature and A/C charts, energy usage and more.
It can also show glance information from what every smart speaker or TV is playing with volume and track controls.
Overall, this is both an advance device and very simple to get started with. It's thoughtfully designed, but some features are not quite ready and for many devices it requires community supported features that might or might not work as intended. Other less popular brands are missing. Basic features like Z-Wave are under-represented. The main control is via tiles on the interface, and that's a bit limited. It doesn't allow for much customization.

Great for new gaming laptops
on June 7, 2024
Posted by: emiliosic
This is DDR5 memory, so it only works with newer laptops including some of Intel's 12th gen processors and newer.
Keep in mind that some laptops with a 12th gen CPU can still use DDR4 and some newer 13th gen laptops have soldered-in memory and not upgradeable.
DDR5 SODIMM in NOT compatible with DDR4. The key is different and the circuitry is not compatible.
That said, these work fine. I've long preferred Micron/Crucial (USA) to other vendors when it comes to DRAM, in years of building and upgrading my PCs did not have memory related issues.
A few times the memory that came with the laptop started to produce crashes and replacing it with Micron worked for me.
These have on-chip ECC and voltage stabilization. Expected nominal speed is 4800 MT/s and could peak at 5600 MT/s, which is a great improvement over older laptops. This is at least 50% faster than standard DDR4 chips found in older gaming laptops.
Each SODIMM is built in 1Rx8, 16GB each.
If your laptop has replaceable SODIMM DDR5 slots, this is a good investment.

Heavy duty off-road
on May 20, 2024
Posted by: emiliosic
This is an off-road scooter, it's not a commuter scooter, as it's much heaver to the point it's hard to lift it up.
Tires are wider with a deep thread.
It has a 600W motor on each wheel with disk brakes on both front and read wheels, with springs on both front and rear.
Overall construction seems very solid, with thick metal everywhere.
The battery is under the foot board and it's rated for up to 25 miles.
The controls are intuitive after a slight learning curve. There is no app needed to operate it. It does have an optional three-digit startup code that can be remove is not needed. The LED screen is visible during daylight with no issues.
It has three pre-programmed 'gears' that electronically limits the max speed and acceleration. The max speed, on a flat paved road is 30 mph. It also has a turbo mode that delivers more torque at the expense of shorter battery range.
It has a front and rear lights, brake light and ambient light on the sides of the foot board and on the stalk.
The stalk folds easily with an easy to use clasp and locks itself with a hook to the rear wheel. The handle does not fold.
It comes with its own charger and takes a few hours for the battery to charge.
The weight of the scooter is about 75 Lbs., and the frame is mostly aluminum.
It's a lot of fun, 30 mph feels like the limit one wants to drive this, because at this speed, any pothole or patch can be a potentially serious fall. It has no issue with hills of moderate incline. Barely notice the difference in speed when going up a hill. Max speed seems to be electrically controlled as I could barely make it over 30 mph downhill.
Overall, this off-road scooter is a blast to ride. It has plenty of power and good battery range.
Also note that this is UL listed.

Bass and other sounds
on April 23, 2024
Posted by: emiliosic
Got the ULT Wear in White to my small collection of headphones.
This set has a few firsts for Sony. First, the name: It's not a mix of letter and numbers.
ULT is the Line and WEAR is the portable version of the ULT line of speakers.
The others being party speakers, these emphasize BASS.
They do have a Sony nomenclature but it's not advertised: WH-ULT900N
Design wise, they very much look like other Sony over the ear headsets.
Although it's all plastic construction, there's some quality to it. The headband is very plush and barely notice it.
The earcups are very supportive and can wear these all day.
The controls are similar to other Sony sets, with some unique quirks: There is a power button that one has to hold for a few seconds to turn on, and longer for pairing, or hold to power off. A small light with different shows status. It's small and not too bright.
Then there is a larger button that switches between ANC or Ambient mode (Hear through). Annoyingly, there are beeps but not a voice response confirming in which mode it is, although one will soon find out. Oddly there is no way to disable ANC/Ambient from the headphones, it can only be disabled back via the phone app because double clicking the same button is meant to launch sponsored apps instead, for some reason.
Then closer to the outer side of the ear cup, there is a large ULT button that controls the level of bass, from two pre-set settings, or disable it (3 Settings total). To confirm which mode it is, the headphone has a distinctive, very loud noise it makes that sounds like shattered glass. It takes some getting used to.
Track and volume controls are via the touch-sensitive surface on the right earcup. On older Sony headphones this was a hit or miss, but I'm happy to report that works surprisingly well here.
Another nice feature is that covering the right earcup with a hand lowers the music volume and lets the ambient noise in. Ideal when interacting with someone.
Removing the left earcup (not the right) pauses the music and resumes it once back on. This works very well and had no false responses.
There is also an analog audio jack (to be used with airplane ports or computers).
Charge is via USB-C, but keep in mind that it does not support USB audio, it's only for charging, and frustratingly, the headphones don't work while charging.
Bluetooth is Multipoint, meaning it can simultaneously connect to two devices (as in a phone and a laptop), and while it does not mix audio sources, whichever comes last can be heard. This is the way many higher end headsets works.
There is an app required to control the headset, and it's Sony's Headphone Connect. This is the same application that's used on most of their headphones, and it's been refined for many years so it works very well. It has some useful features, when enabled, like adaptive sound control, which tracks the location via the phone and other activities to automatically switch from aware to ANC. Like commuting to an office or school and changing modes along the way.
It also displays the Bluetooth codec used (AAC for iPhone or SBC for Android).
It advertises fast pairing for Android and Easy Pairing for Windows. Standard pairing for Apple devices, which is quite simple.
I noticed that unlike older headsets in Sony's 900 series, it doesn't support Sony's high bandwidth ALAC codec (Which I used when connected to a Sony receiver) and doesn't advertise HD audio. Likely for the limited Bluetooth codecs.
Within the app, noticed that when logged in, it can store to Sony's cloud which sounds are played, which I find odd, to say the least. When logged in the application provides settings backup and other functions as well.
I tried to set up 360 Audio that is advertised with these speakers but I found it a waste of time. It requires a subscription to a 3rd party app, and while I knew it wouldn't work with Apple Music, I couldn't set it up with Amazon Music, but might work on Tidal (Which I'm not currently subscribed to) Not interested in a subscription for the headphones.
Battery: It's advertised as 50 Hs without ANC/Ambient, or 30 Hs with either. This is impressive.
It works well with phone calls, and one can replace the phone's assistant (Siri or Google) with Alexa, when paired with the headset.
What left me unimpressed is the sound. It sounds nice and clear, with plenty of bass. I find the high bass setting too much, but to each its own.
When using ANC or ambient mode, the sound doesn't sound as vibrant as expected, it lacks body. It's crisp and detailed, but fiddling with the EQ settings didn't hit the spot for me.
Overall, it's a nice set, with good ANC and plenty of settings, but it's not quite ideal. Using it for a few days, I didn't find a sound profile I could enjoy, but for someone that just cannot get enough bass, this is the pair to get.

Great screen, Google TV is getting better
on April 18, 2024
Posted by: emiliosic
This TV has an excellent screen: QLED with mini-LED backlighting, supports adaptive Dolby Vision, which adapts to the lighting in the room. It also supports 144 Mhz refresh rates to use with gaming PCs.
The TV is 3 inches thick without the base and has a subwoofer on the back. Sounds great mounted on the wall.
The pedestal base is a black metal with a plastic on the back, which I didn't use because it's mounted on the wall.
The remote control is long, plastic imitating gray metal, that looks good, it uses IR and Bluetooth for fast response and doesn't need to be pointed to the TV and has a mic for Google Voice. The TV uses two AAA batteries, and works with NiMH rechargeables (Generic AAA batteries are included).
The TV also has a microphone array so one can say 'Hey Google' without sing the remote. This can be disabled but the TV will have a bright orange light indicating so.
Google TV is much improved from the older TVs we have. This runs Android 12. I notice it's a lot more responsive and less glitchy. When integrated with Google Home, the Google Home app can be used as a remote control.
It also supports Amazon Alexa integrations and works with Apple Home and AirPlay. Both worked very well for me.
It also has the option of setting up as a more basic TV without all of Google Home, which I might consider since like many other Smart TV it has a quite intrusive advertising system that scans the video on the screen and audio even when using an external source. Many tiers of advertising can be disabled during setup.
I have to say, the image quality improved significantly compared to a TV from six years ago that this is replacing.
The only major glitch I found with this TV, which can be very minor for most, is that when using with an AppleTV 4K, the TV's remote control cannot control the AppleTV most of the time (it works very occasionally). This is the only TV in the house with this issue. At the same time, many of the glitches and other issues I had with older Google TVs are gone, so it's an improvement from older TVs. Other HDMI CEC settings works as expected like automatically changing the input, turning connected devices on and off
The best thing on this TV is the screen, which to me is on par with other top brands. It's as good as it gets on LED TVs.

Lightweight, understated workhorse
on April 3, 2024
Posted by: emiliosic
There is a lot to like on this laptop.
After using it for about a week, it has been great.
It's very light, and has an excellent battery for a Windows laptop. It's rated for 14 hours with average use and it's likely true.
The laptop comes in all-metal dark gray. The top is flat with the logo on the side. It's very understated and classy. There is another Asus Zenbook in the house that has a nice pattern on the lid. This is flat. Very discreet.
There are two Thunderbolt-4 ports on one side, and charging is via either of the two ports (or via a Thunderbolt or USB-C dock). It also comes with an HDMI port and a multi-function audio jack. On the other side there is a standard USB 3 port (5Gbps).
The screen is excellent: OLED 1920x1200 resolution with HDR. It's not a 4K screen, but I at only 14 inches wide, it's really not needed. I really like that the aspect ratio is 16:10, so it's a bit taller, and it's much better for work. That extra size makes a big difference. It's also better when watching videos because the controls don't need to overlay the image.
The screen is touchscreen and works with a Windows pen. It doesn't need pairing, it just works. It doesn't come with a pen, but already had one on my desk.
The screen is Gorilla glass (Like most phones).
On top of the screen, there is a "Windows Hello" camera. The camera has a physical cover that goes inside the glass.
The keyboard is as would expect at this grade, with full-size island keys and backlight. Note that it does not have a fingerprint sensor.
The trackpad is quite large and it works well, clicking without too much pressure.
There are no gimmicks nor unique features like in other Zenbooks. Everything works and has a purpose. The CPU is the latest generation Intel Ultra 7, and certified for Intel EVO (Which means that the WiFi6E radio and other components are also made by Intel).
It has 16 Gb RAM and 1TB SSD.
These CPUs are Intel's first generation incorporating an 'NPU', which are specialized cores dedicated to AI functions. While this might not make much difference for most everyday tasks, it helps with video editing and other functions.
The video driver is Intel's Arc which is their latest embedded video. It's good for light gaming and 3D.
The video refresh is 60Hz, so it's not the fastest, but being OLED, the image quality is excellent, and this is not a gaming laptop, so perfect for work and hobbies.
Also it's interesting that the screen opens 180 degrees, so it can stay flat. This might be useful when using it with a pen, but it's not a 2-in-1 device. Weights less than 3 pounds and less than 1 inch thick.
Audio is nice, and it comes with Dolby Atmos. Sound comes from the bottom and since its rubber feet are thick, there's plenty of space for the audio to come through.
It comes with its own USB-C charger. The charger is nice, black and square with a nice texture. What I don't like about the charger is that the cable is not removable (not really an issue), but the prongs are not foldable. It would've been more convenient if they do.
Initial setup is like any other Windows laptop. It sets up fairly quickly, then there are multiple windows upgrades that one has to go through. I'm happy to inform there isn't much bloat at all on this. Besides some Asus support and some extra control panels from Asus, is as a clean Windows install as I've seen. No pushy antivirus and no weird pre-installed stuff.
So, overall, it's an excellent, and very powerful laptop for everyday use in my home office and very portable. It's also very quiet, barely noticed fans when going through major Windows updates, and almost never when using the web browser.
The OLED screen is very good, it really pops, it's an obvious difference from LCD screens.

Wide view and excellent image
on March 20, 2024
Posted by: emiliosic
I've used Logitech cameras for many years consider them among the best. This is a step above anything else they had so far.
The camera itself feel very solid with an aluminum body. The optical components are behind a glass filter and has an mechanical privacy shutter that opens by twisting the lens. Feels in ways like a photo camera.
Audio comes from two microphones (at each side).
The camera detaches from the monitor mount and accepts regular camera mounts, so it can be set on a tripod, etc.
The monitor mount is an evolution from previous Logitech mounts which were already good. It can optionally be glued to the monitor. I don't like that if I don't want to use the glue, it's already set on one side of the mount, that can be flipped out, but it's still there.
The camera can flip downwards so it can be pointed to a desk, so to show documents or other objects or to be used as a scanner.
Connectivity is via USB-C. The cable is not attached to the camera so one can replace the USB-C cable it came with.
The connection speed is 5Gbs, and also works, if needed, with an USB-A 3.0 to USB-C (Adapter not included).
Since this is an 'MX' series device, if one already has the Logi Options+ software that's also used to configure the camera. This is not required but highly recommended on macOS and Windows.
Since this camera is ultra-wide, one can reduce the field of view and position, change exposure, white balance and auto focus.
It also caught my attention that this camera is certified for both Zoom and Teams, and it also works on Google Meet and on Chomebooks.
On Chomebooks, it doesn't use any additional software. The OS lets you crop similarly to how it works with the Options+ software.
On macOS, it also works great for Facetime.
For gaming or streaming, it can also be used with G Hub, which also provides the same level of control as Options+. Have both installed and both work.
The USB-C cable that it comes with is fairly long and good quality. It's also a bit thick so it's not as flexible. This is because this camera needs more bandwidth than older models.
I also appreciate that it came in a paper box with no plastic.

Very fast but not so extreme
on February 16, 2024
Posted by: emiliosic
This has a current generation PCIe 4.0 interface (There is PCIe 5.0 but it's not yet commonly used, and the improvements in connection speed would not matter in this case).
Both the controller and memory chips are stamped with SanDisk on them, so it's truly a 'first party' product. The controller is made in Taiwan and the memory in China.
Speed wise, it's very fast, but not the fastest.
This SSD has the same specs (and as it appears to me, the same components as the Western Digital Black Series SN770) - WD is SanDisk's parent company, whereas SanDisk focuses in NVRAM products.
This is a product that came to market about two years ago, so it makes a proven technology.
There are faster drives out there but they cost more, however at a read rate of about 5K MB/s and similar write speeds, this is more than enough for most, and if planning on using an USB-C enclosure, this is faster than most USB-C cases.
The form factor on this SSD is the '2280' size. This is the longest type of SSD stick. Not every laptop or AIO fits these, so make sure it fits first. There is a similar model in a smaller form factor. There are similar SanDisk and WD SSDs with the same components in a smaller size, if needed.
I'm using it to make it into a boot device on a Xeon based home server, and for this application is a great choice.

Retro style and superior sound that go great together—anywhere. Make a statement with powerful sound and distinctive retro style. The JBL Authentics 200 speaker recalls JBL’s iconic ‘70s styles— featuring a Quadrex grille, custom leather-like enclosure, and premium aluminum frame, now with even better performance and versatility. As impressive as the retro design looks in any room, it sounds even better. Turn up the music and you’ll get big, balanced sound, amazing clarity, and deep bass. With Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa* available simultaneously, you can play your favorite music, control your smart home devices, and more, hands-free, using just your voice.

Excellent sound, excellent smarts
on December 25, 2023
Posted by: emiliosic
Foreword, I regularly use higher end smart speakers from other very recognizable brands.
I used different types of JBL and Harman speakers in the past and I've been very happy with them.
I dismissed them since they became a division of a mega corporation, and when I first saw these speakers I dismissed it as a gimmick since its retro style is eerily similar to a different brand, and since JBL's classic speakers didn't look anything like a guitar speaker.
However JBL has been making bookshelf speakers with the waffle screen for a few years now, reminiscent of their 1970' era.
What drew me to these is their first of kind home assistant integrations as well as classic JBL sound.
So I have to say, it completely exceeded my expectations at every level.
Style:
The looks, besides their originality, just looks great. The frame has that roady amp style with a leather-like pattern, which is somewhat soft to the touch, not a hard plastic. The gold tone accents fit well with the overall theme. The large buttons look like they belong.
Audio:
It's a small speaker so it sounds as expected from a bookshelf-size speaker, but with a punch.
It's Stereo, although to notice any stereo separation one would have t stand right in front of the speakers. Cannot remove the grille but it appears to have speakers on its right and left. There is also a downward firing sub on the bottom of the speaker. It's feet are about 1 inch high with soft rubber endings, so there is enough gap for the sub to breathe. The sub is visible from the bottom and it looks great. The speaker has several mics to after playing for a few minutes, it learns the acoustics of the room it's in. It's all automatic and unlike other speakers, there is nothing to set up. Excellent implementation here. Audio is very detailed and natural, with plenty of bass. The app (more below) provides a tri-band EQ and there are bass and treble controls from the knobs on the speaker. With a high resolution stream or analog input, it renders details like a singer's breath or a guitar pick with high fidelity.
Inputs and controls:
There are three main buttons on top: The play/pause and volume knob, bass and treble. There are normally no lights on the speaker, except when using one of the knobs, its ring lights up white to show its position. Then there are two small buttons: Bluetooth and Moment. Bluetooth is like on many other speakers: Press to switch or pair. The moments button is like a shortcut that's programmed via the app.
Bluetooth is the latest version 5.3 and supports multipoint: Connects to two devices at the same time, like a phone, tablet or computer.
On the back of the speaker:
There is the power cable. The power supply is built-in, so there is a standard, removable cable connector. I appreciate that there is no power brick.
Then there is a physical Ethernet connector (Instead of using Wi-Fi, if available). This is can be very useful as a wired connection is generally more stable. Wi-Fi supports 2.4G and 5G Wi-Fi 6.
There is also an USB-C that can be used to connect an USB stick with audio files, but it doesn't work as USB audio (I tried).
There is also a 3.5mm stereo input. I'm using it to connect to the computer monitor and works well: It plays from the analog input when it's not streaming. One issue is that it sometimes doesn't switch right away from streaming to analog, but it works for the most part. Reconnecting the plug solves it.
There is also a physical button to enable and disable the mics for the home assistants.
There is also a light behind the grille that lights up when invoking or receiving a notification from the assistants: White for Google, Blue for Alexa, yellow for notifications, etc.
Home assistants:
This series is the first to integrate both Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa simultaneously. Once set up though the JBL One app, invoke it via "Hey Google" or "Alexa" and they work as they should with no delay, answering questions, setting up alarms or playing music. I didn't realize how useful this is as each assistant has its strengths.
App:
The only app required is JBL One. It's used for initial setup, which worked without issue for me. It's very simple, and it's used for a variety of JBL speakers.
It can pair more than one speaker of the same type for immersive/stereo audio, or multiroom.
It can control EQ, volume, show cover art, and basic controls (play/pause, next, prev).
It can also integrate directly with a handful of music services directly so one can play from the JBL app without having to stream it from the phone nor from a home assistant. It's limited but it works great for services including Amazon Music, TuneIn, iHeart Radio, TIDAL, as well as Napster, Calm Radio and Qobuz.
Streaming:
It really covers all the bases:
Apple AirPlay 2: Note that Apple Home currently shows the speaker and can be assigned to rooms but does not show playing tracks or controls, but AirPlay cover art and controls do work from the JBL app itself. Sound is great with no delay.
Google Cast: Works right from every app I tried.
Spotify Connect: Flawless, works with every type of account.
Amazon: From Amazon music or from Alexa.
Overall it's a great speaker, surpassed my expectations.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Very practical, keeps warm for three hours

Ember cups have been popular in our office and this tumbler is ideal for commuters.
This is controlled by the phone app exclusively (Via Bluetooth). The only control on the tumbler is the on/off button on the base, and a color light indicating state at the edge of the base.
The app works flawlessly. It never failed to connect. I also like that it has presets (or add custom ones) and it can optionally connect with Apple Health (on my iPhone) and track caffeine intake.
The heater will automatically shut off when the mug is empty. This has worked perfectly so far. It does not however turn completely off: The light and Bluetooth connection remain, but it doesn't seem to use much power at all this way. It can be completely turned off by holding the power button for two seconds.
It comes with two lids. This seems to me like an interesting choice. One lid has a handle and locks in. It somehow looks very nice with symmetric curves that just looks very nice. However I personally don't find it very practical because one has to un-screw it to drink from it.
The other lid does not lock, it's held tightly by the rubber seal, and there's no handle on it. It has a sliding tab to open and close it. It does not auto-lock, and will leak if the tumbler shakes or falls down with the tab open. It's also the easiest lid when it’s time to clean: Twist the lock from the inside the lid and the tab comes off, all very easy to clean without the need of a brush. Just rinse/sponge and it can be cleaned in seconds. It's a fantastic design on this regard.
The tumbler held charge for about 3 hours, exactly as advertised.
However, my mail peeve with this is that the insulation is very poor: The outside of the tumbler immediately feels warm when pouring hot coffee or tea on it. Not good, particularly because the heater has to work much harder than with a tumbler with proper insulation. Also the coffee tastes bitter and burnt after the 3 hours because the heater keeps simmering the coffee. With better insulation the beverage should taste good for longer and would be kept warm for longer.
Charging is via the included coaster. The coaster is powered by a wall transformer with a barrel plug. The bottom of the mug has two circular contacts that are gold coater for better efficiency.
The coaster can be used with other Ember products and the tumbler stays in place. Keep in mind that there is no USB-C charging option.
Overall, I like this but there is an issue with the impracticality of the handle lid and the lid that one can drink from does not lock. Then there is the obvious defect that the insulation on the tumbler is very poor. I tend to sip slowly so it's a problem for me, but not so much for someone that drinks it within 90 minutes or so. Also the only wat to charge it is via the coaster.
The app is very well designed but there are no manual controls on the tumbler itself.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Get more out of your home theater setup with this Sonos Beam compact smart soundbar. A 5-speaker with five amplifier setup delivers rich, big sound to your room, while the single-cable connection allows for fast, easy setup. Compatible with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant voice control, this Sonos Beam compact smart soundbar lets you control the volume and power with the just sound of your voice.

Is pairing the Beam with 2 Play 5s and a Sub versus the Sub and 2 Sonos Ones an overkilI? I just purchased 2 Play 5s, 4 Sonos Ones, a Sub and the Beam and I am now having second thoughts on the original configuration/room location

It depends on your music tastes and budget :)
Keep in mind that these will act as surround speakers, so in this case you'll have surround speakers that are more powerful than the main speaker and that's not necessarily the best setup.
If I were contemplating such solution I'll stick with the Sonos Play for surround and use the Play:5 elsewhere as main speakers.

I have set up the beam and can turn off the tv with Alexa, but when I ask to have the tv turned on, it never turns on even though Alexa says it is done. What am I doing wrong? I have a TCL 49inc Roku tv. It is set up on both Sonos app and Alexa app.

It works for me, using a Hisense TV. "Alexa, Tun On TV", it turns on the TV connected to the Sonos Beam.
It could be an issue with the HDMI CEC configuration on your TV, or it could be that the phrase "Turn on TV" is configured on Alexa to do something else. Check on the Alexa app if there is a group, device or routine named either "TV" or "Turn on TV".
We have a Harmony hub remove already configured in another room and Alexa was turning that on instead when speaking to the Sonos. After renaming that activity via Harmony, then Alexa worked as intended on the soundbar.

Only @ Best BuyListen to music with this sweat- and dust-resistant wireless Jabra Elite headset. It connects via USB, mini-jack or Bluetooth, and a powerful microphone lets you use voice commands with your mobile device. This Jabra Elite headset reduces background noise and has a built-in motion sensor that lets you track fitness efforts.

Can an owner of the original non active 65t comment on the fit and stability difference with the active version? Curious if that and the extra IP rating is worth a look, or negligible.

I have both. (The second pair is for my wife). They are the same size, shape and weight. Besides slight color differences, the Active have a rubberized texture on the earbuds and on the charging case. The manufacturer's web site also indicates that it has a motion sensor, but I have not seen any difference when using the iOS app.
The silicon gel pieces look the same as the standard model. Battery life and other features are the same.
I've been using the standard model since it came out and the Actives for a few days, and didn't notice any difference in how they fit on my ears.
See the pictures of both models side by side. Active are on the right

Does both earbuds stay functional with audio when you talk? Can you hear stereo sound (not mono) when you talk?

Yes, on phone calls, audio comes from both earbuds. Also each earbud has two mics, and uses the mic array to isolate ambient noise

Listen to your playlist in peace with these Sony headphones. They have a 40mm dome driver to deliver the full depth of audio, and the noise cancelling feature minimizes outside disturbances for a better listening experience. These Sony headphones have a battery life of up to 30 hours for extended jam sessions.

Can these headphones work as noise cancelling without having to be connected to the phone (like the Bose)?

Yes, it works without a connection

Does the quick attention mode turn on when you rest your head against the the side of the airplane or headrest ? If so, can this feature be turned off ?

No, it doesn't activate when laying on a pillow, etc.
It must detect induction from the body, so a pillow doesn't trigger it.
The feature cannot be turned off.

Let’s say the battery dies and I connect with a wire. Will noise cancelling work? I know Bose QC35 will provide a sound but no noise cancelling on that case. What about Sony?

Yes, it works with a wire without power

Does the recently unveiled new version of MDR-1000x (WH-1000XM2) support multiple bluetooth connections as does Bose's QC 35 and all the other high-end wireless headphones? That was the only reason I haven't purchased the MDR-1000x.

It does remember multiple BT connections, and can connect to a music profile and audio(phone) profile simultaneously, but not to two music streams simultaneously.
