Sleek Workhorse
on October 21, 2017

from Wakefield, MA
Inspiron line has been for years simple workhorse laptops for every day home/school use.
The line keeps improving and this model has plenty of welcome changes.
The whole housing is made of brushed metal, the screen is a seamless piece of glass. The touchpad is large, accepts multi-finger gestures and it's very responsive.
The screen is touchscreen and accepts active pens, although does not include one -- optional, and has 360 degrees hinges that folds as a tablet. The system works well and the screen stays in place.
The keyboard has island keys with good feedback, and good amount of travel for a laptop keyboard. The keys are lighted, with off/med/max settings. It does not have a number pad, which is actually something I prefer because the keys are centered instead of having to type on the left side because of the number pad that I'd rarely use.
On the left it has a round power plug, an USB-C port that also has DisplayPort (But doesn't seem to be able to charge the computer, which is inconvenient, since many new laptops are now using USB-C chargers), a full-size DHMI port that supports HDMI 2.0 (For 4K TVs), two USB 3.1 ports and audio jack. To the right there's a security lock port, another USB and an SD card reader.
There aren't many lights to distract on this laptop: The power button has a white light and there's a sleep/charge light in the front, but there is no charge indicator when the lid is closed, which confused me at first since I cannot tell when it finishes charging.
The screen is 1080x1920 (Full HD), and it's very clear to read.
Audio is OK for a laptop, comes from the sides on the bottom.
Something I noticed is that it's much simpler to service than other new laptops: The bottom shell can be easily removed with Philips screws, and some are captive to make it simpler. The battery can be replaced with some screws and there are two DDR4 memory slots (This model has 12 GB, so one slot is 8 GB and the other has a 4 GB module). Dell site mentions it can be upgraded up to 16 GB, the 2.5"5400 RPM Tb hard drive and has an empty slot for an M.2 SSD.
The CPU is an 8th gen i7, which is currently the best, and if you're looking for a laptop to keep for a few years, this is the type of CPU to consider.
The battery is good enough around the house, but it might not last the whole day. It could last 6 hours depending on use.
Hard drive: It has 2 TB, which is plenty and more for most users , however I should've considered a smaller SSD instead because an SSD would've been much faster, runs cooler and the battery lasts longer. Although this model comes with Windows 10 Home, it supports drive encryption, which it something I couldn't do with older Windows 10 home laptops, because this has a newer TPM (Encryption) module 2.0.
There is a front camera that supports Windows Hello login, that's part of Windows 10.
I'm very pleased with this laptop, my issues are that it doesn't charge via USB-C like many new laptops, and the battery could be larger. I would've preferred an SSD version (so consider the other Inspiron models with SSDs), but since it's very simple to expand, I can add it later. Windows 10 Home supports encryption, the screen is very nice to read on, and the keys are nice to type on. The touch screen with pen support is also nice, and it's easy to expand.

Good looks, mildly 'smart' TV with clear sound and
on October 19, 2017
Posted by: emiliosic
from Wakefield, MA
The TV frame looks great, with a very thin brushed metal bezel all around, and two metal legs. No plastic to be seen on the front. The rear of the TV is as thin as the screen, and most of the back is a single piece of metal covering the screen. From the center down, it has the components and connectors. The bottom widens and contains the speakers.
There isn't much to distract from the screen. The logo below the screen is very subtle and doesn't light up, thankfully. There is a small LED to one side below the frame that's also the IR receiver, and that can also be turned off completely.
Turning it on, there is an initial settings walk-through that's very good. I was able to set up Wi-Fi and inputs with few steps and no issues.
Smart TV: It runs Opera TV app store, and while it has many of the popular like Netflix, Amazon. Vudu, Youtube or Plex, doesn't have Hulu, nor TV channel apps. Wi-Fi works great, and supports DLNA, USB ports and Miracast (Hisense calls It AnyView Cast). Windows 10 detects the TV but couldn't connect to it to share the screen via Wi-Fi. In my opinion, having Roku, Amazon Fire TV or even Chromecast support would've been a better choice. There is an app 'smartTVremote' for phones that kind of works, but it's half-baked at best. The saving grace is that it can be used as a virtual keyboard within apps.
Inputs: It has 4 HDMI inputs, two on the side and two on the back. The two on the side are HDMI 2.0 (For 4K input). The first also supports MHL (To connect to some Android devices) and the second supports ARC (Audio Return Channel) to connect to a receiver or sound bar. The other two HDMI inputs on the back are HDMI 1.4 for HD inputs, but 4K players might not work on these. It also has analog inputs, Ethernet, optical audio output and headphone/line-out output. Two of the USB ports are 0.5A and one USB provides 1 Amp. There is also an antenna connector, and does have a tuner.
The remote control is solid, well organized, with large and easy to press keys but it's rather large, no backlight, IR only and doesn't control other devices.
Besides the smart TV apps, the menus on the TV are very intuitive, it's responsive, the inputs can be renamed, reorganized, system settings are very extensive, with good control over CEC functions, and very extensive audio and image controls, that can be set per-input. I was impressed on how much can be configured on this TV, audio settings with 5-band EQ, extensive color settings.
Audio: It has four speakers: two on the bottom, rear-firing and two towards the bottom. There's a setting for wall-mounting audio (because of the rear-firing speakers). Overall sounds good, better than other TVs we had before. However there is not Bluetooth for night watching. The TV itself broadcasts a Bluetooth signal (HS SmartTV) but can only be used for internet access -- The Bluetooth deal doesn't make much sense.
So, the best for last: Image. The screen is a 10-bit (HDR), 120Hz, 4K (3840x2160) panel with local dimming zones. It supports HDR10 but not Dolby Vision (Most TV's don't support it yet). Upscaling of HD and older videos looks very good to me. Watching 720p and 1080p content looks good, with no noticeable artifacts. HDR content from YouTube and Amazon Prime look very natural. It's not necessarily vibrant, but very natural and nuanced (Remember that this TV can be calibrated to each's tastes). Like on most other LCD TV's there's a small amount of blooming, and only shows in almost black scenes like closing titles, and it's not different than in other LCDs. Family is also impressed on how clear images are on this TV.
As for the 'Smart TV' limitations, like in most TVs, the 'Smart' part is somewhat gimmicky, and consider adding a 4K capable AppleTV, Amazon Fire, Roku or Chromecast Ultra.
So get this TV for how it looks on and off, which is very good, not for the 'Smart' factor.

Full-size Sphero Fun
on October 10, 2017
Posted by: emiliosic
from Wakefield, MA
If you've seen other Sphero products, the Minis are very similar but much smaller, about the size of a golf ball.
The package includes a charging cable and tiny cones and other obstacles. The acrylic box it comes with is re-usable.
They connect to a phone or tablet that supports the Sphero Mini app or using the Sphero Edu apps, via Bluetooth Smart (No pairing required).
They go quite fast for the size, and the shells are strong enough to take some hits.
Unlike the Sphero (full-size balls), it's not water-proof and in order to charge them, the shell opens in two, and with the internals exposed, there's a micro-usb port.
The shells can be bought separately. We got the white and the pink. The color ones have a stripe around the shell.
The Balls light up (There's a full spectrum of colors configurable on the app), so I think the white looks better.
The Edu app is interesting particularly in technology classes or similar settings, or with curious older kids that want to create movement programs, while the Mini app is pure gaming fun.
There are various controller settings (Joystick, Slingshot, tilting, etc.), and a 'face' mode that's supposed to work by changing facial expressions, although my kids couldn't make it work.
The Mini app also has a game controller mode where there are a few skill games to choose from, and the games are controlled by holding the Mini similarly to a trackball. My 10-year old likes these games a lot.

Two issues I found that can be a concern to some:
• When trying to control more than one Mini, the app distinguishes by their factory-set code, but they cannot yet be renamed.
• Doesn't work with Amazon Fire tablets: There is no Mini app on the Amazon app store and the Edu app doesn't work with Kindle Fire tablets. It would've been great for me because my kinds use the Amazon FreeTime service.

Comfortable, clear sound

The headphones have a very simple yet classic design. The headband is a single piece of metal wrapped with leather on top and cushion and fabric inside. The headband is fused to the hinges that hold the earcups, with exposed cables.
The earcups are plastic with a polished metal cover. The inside is a very comfortably cushioned leather and fabric.
Sound isolation is very good. People around you can hear the music but does a good job of isolating ambient noise.
Note that the earcups are not replaceable.
Controls: There are three controls: Volume up/down and a multi-function that works for play/stop/next/back/on/off depending on how it's pressed. -- Pairing and full reset is by holding the + and - simultaneously.
There is no NFC nor voice prompts.
There is a single color-changing LED (That's off during normal use, so it's not distracting), audio-in and micro-USB for charging. The audio-in works without battery power.

Sound quality: Overall, it produces a very neutral and clear sound. If you're planning on using the headphones with an iOS or Android phone, there's an App 'Beoplay' that checks for firmware updates on the headphones as well as an equalizer that's very intuitive and simple to use. In my particular preference, the default was a bit more muted and bass heavy than I'd preferred, but the EQ made it a lot better.
The headphones support the Bluetooth AAC codec, and the audio quality with my iPhone was about the same as with a wired connection.
Bluetooth range is excellent. No drops three rooms away from the phone. Once the headphone is paired, the connection when powering on is very quick.
Microphone for voice calls is good. I tested making voice recordings and recordings were very clear.
A drawback is that to turn it off, one has to press the multi-function button for several seconds. The phone will first trigger Siri, start listening and then the headphones eventually turn off. The headphones also turn off after 15 minutes or so of no use.
Battery easily lasts all day. Rated for 19 hours when new.
I was disappointed that there  was no carrying case included with the headphones.

To resume
Pros:
• Clear and balanced sound
• Very comfortable to wear
• Classic simple design
• Lightweight
• Long range BT with AAC support
• 2 years warranty
Cons:
• No carrying case
• Difficult to turn off
• No replaceable ear cushions
• Non-replaceable Li-Ion battery

Well built, very thick cord
on September 22, 2017

Verified Purchase:Yes
The cable is built well. I had good experiences with Kanex brand products, and this cable is Apple certified.
Be aware that this cable is about 9 ft long. I got it to use as a charging cable on a sofa, but even in this case it's a bit too long.
Because it's long, it's also very thick. By far the thickest lightning cable in use. Because it's thick it's also not very flexible, and also it should be more durable than Apple cables

Solid printer
on August 15, 2017
Posted by: emiliosic
from Wakefield, MA
Verified Purchase:Yes
Solid printer for low-volume applications like home-office.
Printer arrived very well packed, and includes ink. Does not include USB cable (Which isn't needed).
When first turns on, follow the instructions on its color screen. In my case, connected it via ethernet cable to a home router nearby. It also supports Wi-Fi. Then the menu walks through fax settings etc.
The printer can be configured from its own screen and buttons or via its web page.
It supports AirPrint and there are also apps to use its scanner from a phone or tablet.
Windows 10 doesn't need drivers to print.
Windows 7 needs drivers, but I was pleasantly surprised that there is only one download from the Epson web site is all that's required, which installs print, fax and scanner tools.
There is a 'Combo driver' available for Windows 10 and macOS with additional functionality as well,
Besides AirPrint, it also supports google print and email to print and scanner cloud, as well as scanning to USB and memory cards.
The memory card slots on the printer, by default are configured to appear as a network driver (this can be changed), which can be useful in some cases.
ADF supports dual-sided scanning, as well as printing on both sides.
Buttons are well laid out, and have a solid feel. It's color screen is a bit small but it works well for what it is, and at this price point, nothing to complain about.
The printer uses three color cartridges and one black. A reason for choosing this instead of 'photo' printers is the expectation that using 4 cartridges instead of 6 or so for photo printers would be cheaper in the long run.
Print quality is fine. Nothing special, and nothing to complain about. we use it for normal household printing, including young kids and their projects.
This model has been sold since 2014, and Epson keeps updating its firmware. At some point during installation, the printer found a new firmware (From 2017) and asked to install it. (on its own, without a computer). This attests to be a solid workhorse.
Had it for about a month with no issues.

Very little smoke
on July 29, 2017
Posted by: emiliosic
from Wakefield, MA
Grill is relatively small, good for one or two portions at a time.
Grilling any meats or vegetables does produce smoke from the food itself, there's no way around it. However this grill keeps the grease pan relatively cold so it does not keep on searing the oils and grease on the tray. The heating elements are recessed on the sides and covered by a glass.
A steak takes about 18 minutes (thick cut, medium temperature).
Heat seems consistent around the edges.
Vegetables produce almost no smoke, a lean beef cut produces some smoke and a sausage would produce a bit more smoke.
However it is actually a lot less smoke than cooking a beef on the stove.
Cleaning is relatively quick. The grill top is solid aluminum (coated black) and the grease pan is deep enough to handle with ease. It slides to one side.
The side panels are not removable, so it's impossible to keep perfectly clean, but it's simple to clean well enough so it doesn't grease up with moist paper towels.
The grill and pans are dishwasher safe, but it's simpler to just rinse them with dish soap and hot water. It would've been better if the inside walls of the grill were removable.
It comes with simple instructions and a recipe book.
The only control on the switch is off/warming/on.
So it's simple to use, lightweight, doesn't produce a lot of smoke, cooks consistently and is easy to clean most of it.

Really does the vacuuming for you
on July 26, 2017
Posted by: emiliosic
from Wakefield, MA
We have several vacuums at home: Cordless sticks, corded and cordless uprights, shop vacs and some in between. They're all great, but none of them does the work for you.
This is our first, and likely not the last robo vac.
The point of these is to help in daily cleaning (or every other day).
With this model, every Roomba they sell can be optionally controlled via WiFi from a phone (or from Amazon Echo or Google assistant).
This is the entry-level model, so the price is more accessible. Other models have better cleaning brushes/suction, bigger dust bins and the top models actually create a map of the house so it doesn't keep on bumping info furniture.
Besides the top model, this works by navigating in seemingly random patterns, and has some sensors to either slow down or more or less gently tap furniture and turns away.
The cleaning cycle takes one hour. At the end of the cycle, it eventually finds its way back into its charging base and goes back to charge on its own. Interesting to watch the first time.
We live in a mid-size house and we used the vacuum in two levels. This vacuum will cover the whole level.
The first time we let it loose in the bedrooms, it did a pretty good job at cleaning under the beds, which is always a pain with other vacuums, and went under other furniture without getting stuck.
On the main level, it did pretty good also, but it doesn't sense chairs very well so it ends up gently bumping into them.
It has not scratched anything (the bumper works very well), the bristles are very gentle on the hardwood floor and hasn't toppled anything.
It comes with a 'virtual wall', which is a tiny plastic lighthouse that signals areas that are blocked to the vacuum (the vacuum won't cross that invisible line). The lighthouse can be set to either a line or a perimeter. We're using it to block a playroom, which always has little toys on the floor…
Additional light walls or chargers can be purchased separately.
It's very easy to clean but the dustbin is rather small, so keep in mind you'll end up emptying frequently.
It also comes with an additional dust filter. Not sure how often to replace, they look like they can last a long time.
Also, it works with both Amazon Echo (Alexa) and Google Home, to start or stop cleaning schedules.
The phone app can be used to program weekly schedules, check on progress, etc.
Note: This modes does not 'map' the house, so the app does not show a 'cleaning map'. Only the top models do that.
Keep in mind, specially if you have kids or pets, to avoid leaving things like toys, papers, etc. on the floor, or limit the areas where it can wander to.
In all, very happy with the new Roomba. We'll likely get another to have on each floor.

Among the best portable mouse
on June 29, 2017
Posted by: emiliosic
from Wakefield, MA
Often switch between Mac and Windows laptops, and was looking for a portable, Bluetooth mouse with rechargeable mouse. Then this came along, and it's almost perfect for what I needed, except…
This mouse utilizes a newer version of Bluetooth called 'Bluetooth LE' (Also called Bluetooth Smart or simple BLE), which utilizes very little power on itself so batteries last a lot longer, and here's the problem: The Mac I'm using is a mid-2012 that does support Bluetooth 4.0 but for some reason cannot pair with this mouse. For now I'm using the USB adapter that comes with it (USB Unifying Receiver), which, when connected makes the computer see the mouse and similarly connected keyboard like a wired USB device. This way worked perfectly and right away.
Another computer I use is a new Windows 10 laptop, which connected right away with Bluetooth, and has no issues, so beware if you plan on using Bluetooth and have a slightly older laptop.
The mouse itself works great. Works on clear glass or any other surface. Clicking feels right. Has side buttons and side scrolling on the wheel. What's different is that clicking on the wheel sets it in either step click or free scrolling. There is no middle button when clicking on the wheel; Instead the middle button is behind the wheel and a bit hard to reach (or until I get used to it). The wheel is made of metal with a rubberized center and has a certain quality feeling to it.
The mouse is light but has good weight on the back of it, so it feels solid when used.
The mouse can connect to three computers simultaneously (when using the Logitech Options driver) or has a button on the back that pressing it switches between the three devices, be either Bluetooth LE or the USB receiver(s).
The reconnection on either BLE or USB when switching or powering on is almost instant. Rarely seen a Bluetooth device reconnect so quickly.
Mouse can be use while recharging (USB Cable included) and charged completely in about 1 hour. When turning it on, a single light behind the scroll wheel indicates the level of charge (which goes dark after a few seconds).
Software driver: The "Logitech Options" software is optional but it offers a very neat trick: It works with Logitech keyboards and/or mouse that supports what they call 'flow': All the computers that use the same mouse and/or keyboard, when used at the same time communicate with each other through this software (and Wi-Fi or Ethernet), which makes the mouse switch computers when crossing a (defined) corner on the screen, literally making them work like a single computer (The connection indicator on the mouse automatically changes to the active computer). Also the clipboard can be set to be shared between them, regardless of running either macOS or Windows. The clipboard is shared over Wi-Fi, and copying either images or text works fine.

I've been using Eneloop for about 10 years. Initially made by Sanyo and now Panasonic owns it. Never had issues with these. These last generation hold more charge and remain charged for months. Use them on anything from remote controls, kids toothbrushes, electronic locks, keyboard/mouse and toys.
Unlike other brands, these can be re-charged for years without loosing much capacity.

Get more out of your home theater setup with this Sonos Beam compact smart soundbar. A 5-speaker with five amplifier setup delivers rich, big sound to your room, while the single-cable connection allows for fast, easy setup. Compatible with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant voice control, this Sonos Beam compact smart soundbar lets you control the volume and power with the just sound of your voice.

Is pairing the Beam with 2 Play 5s and a Sub versus the Sub and 2 Sonos Ones an overkilI? I just purchased 2 Play 5s, 4 Sonos Ones, a Sub and the Beam and I am now having second thoughts on the original configuration/room location

It depends on your music tastes and budget :)
Keep in mind that these will act as surround speakers, so in this case you'll have surround speakers that are more powerful than the main speaker and that's not necessarily the best setup.
If I were contemplating such solution I'll stick with the Sonos Play for surround and use the Play:5 elsewhere as main speakers.

Compatible with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant voice control, this Sonos Beam compact smart soundbar lets you control the volume and power with the just sound of your voice.

I have set up the beam and can turn off the tv with Alexa, but when I ask to have the tv turned on, it never turns on even though Alexa says it is done. What am I doing wrong? I have a TCL 49inc Roku tv. It is set up on both Sonos app and Alexa app.

It works for me, using a Hisense TV. "Alexa, Tun On TV", it turns on the TV connected to the Sonos Beam.
It could be an issue with the HDMI CEC configuration on your TV, or it could be that the phrase "Turn on TV" is configured on Alexa to do something else. Check on the Alexa app if there is a group, device or routine named either "TV" or "Turn on TV".
We have a Harmony hub remove already configured in another room and Alexa was turning that on instead when speaking to the Sonos. After renaming that activity via Harmony, then Alexa worked as intended on the soundbar.

Only @ Best BuyListen to music with this sweat- and dust-resistant wireless Jabra Elite headset. It connects via USB, mini-jack or Bluetooth, and a powerful microphone lets you use voice commands with your mobile device. This Jabra Elite headset reduces background noise and has a built-in motion sensor that lets you track fitness efforts.

Can an owner of the original non active 65t comment on the fit and stability difference with the active version? Curious if that and the extra IP rating is worth a look, or negligible.

I have both. (The second pair is for my wife). They are the same size, shape and weight. Besides slight color differences, the Active have a rubberized texture on the earbuds and on the charging case. The manufacturer's web site also indicates that it has a motion sensor, but I have not seen any difference when using the iOS app.
The silicon gel pieces look the same as the standard model. Battery life and other features are the same.
I've been using the standard model since it came out and the Actives for a few days, and didn't notice any difference in how they fit on my ears.
See the pictures of both models side by side. Active are on the right

Does both earbuds stay functional with audio when you talk? Can you hear stereo sound (not mono) when you talk?

Yes, on phone calls, audio comes from both earbuds. Also each earbud has two mics, and uses the mic array to isolate ambient noise

Listen to your playlist in peace with these Sony headphones. They have a 40mm dome driver to deliver the full depth of audio, and the noise cancelling feature minimizes outside disturbances for a better listening experience. These Sony headphones have a battery life of up to 30 hours for extended jam sessions.

Can these headphones work as noise cancelling without having to be connected to the phone (like the Bose)?

Yes, it works without a connection

Does the quick attention mode turn on when you rest your head against the the side of the airplane or headrest ? If so, can this feature be turned off ?

No, it doesn't activate when laying on a pillow, etc.
It must detect induction from the body, so a pillow doesn't trigger it.
The feature cannot be turned off.

Let’s say the battery dies and I connect with a wire. Will noise cancelling work? I know Bose QC35 will provide a sound but no noise cancelling on that case. What about Sony?

Yes, it works with a wire without power

Does the recently unveiled new version of MDR-1000x (WH-1000XM2) support multiple bluetooth connections as does Bose's QC 35 and all the other high-end wireless headphones? That was the only reason I haven't purchased the MDR-1000x.

It does remember multiple BT connections, and can connect to a music profile and audio(phone) profile simultaneously, but not to two music streams simultaneously.
