Simple machine, quiet with Wi-Fi control
on December 28, 2025
Posted by: emiliosic
Unlike other machines, this is deceptively simple and works well.
It's definitely quiet. Noise is barely audible although it can be heard and on a different pitch than most fans, slightly different than the expected white noise, so it might take time for one to adjust to it.
We installed it in a hallway outside bedrooms so it’s not an issue.
Most of the machine is the actual filter. There are two tabs to press on the side and the whole external case lifts off from the base, which holds two filters, one inside the other.
Inside, a fan is clearly visible near the base, from which the air flows into the jet-like shape on top.
The buttons are very simple: Power on/off, the button to set the display, and to reset filter like while held, and the speed button, which can be set to auto.
The machine has an internal air pollution sensor that's used to control the speed of the fan when in auto mode.
The small color screen is quite bright and displays an air quality graph among other settings.
We already had a Dyson app, which while not necessary, it can be used as a remote control and to visualize air quality metrics.
This same app is also used on other Dyson appliances.
We already had the app installed and adding the new machine took no more than two minutes.
Dyson integrates directly with Alexa and Google Home via a cloud connection. However there is no Apple Home nor Matter for local connections, which is unfortunate. My other Dyson machine can be unofficially integrated with Home Assistant although this machine is not recognized yet. Likely a matter of time.
One minor complaint is that the plug is extremely large. It sticks out way too far when plugged directly into a wall plug, with a thick cable that seems over-spec for a small fan.
Overall it's a simple, quiet air purifier. I like that it can be remotely controlled from an app and some of the home assistants.

Just right

This stand gets a lot of things right.
Ideally to be used in a nightstand or desk.
First, it looks very nice with a solid light cream base and brass colored arm.
The phone charger rotates slightly up and down so the phone can be used as a clock or watch from the nightstand.
The base is weighed and rubberized so it stays in place.
The top of the base has an indentation so the iPod case fits in the right spot without much guessing. This is an improvement over other models where one would have to find the right spot. It works with some case covers. In my case the cover is light plastic.
The phone is iPhone 17 Pro Max and holds right through its magsafe case in both horizontal and vertical.
Apple watch fits right in. No need to mess with the band.
The base has an USB-C plug and comes with its own USB-C cable and wall charger.
The cable is replaceable, not permanently attached to the base, which is better for me.
The plug is inside the base so not at all visible.
Underneath the base there is cable management to stow excess cable length.
The wall charger that comes with it is a single-port 40W charger.
The charging speed for the phone is 15W and supports Qi2 / Magsafe, so the newer charging standards, and the phone recognizes it with the ring animation.
The only caveat to this setup is that the wall charger is on the bigger size and about blocks the other outlet. Even clunkier on a power strip. I settled on plugging into a power strip using a 'plug saver' tiny extension cord. A slight change on the shape of the power adapter would've addressed the issue. Also it should work with any other similarly powerful plug.
Overall, great looking and good performing charging stand. I like the way it looks, and covers the personal essentials charging the phone, earbuds and watch.

Big sound from shelf speakers
on December 17, 2025
Posted by: emiliosic
Listened to the Cheap Audio Man and he's right.
These speakers produce a great sound and at a good price.
Paired with our STR-DH190 stereo amp, ran A/B testing against our floor speakers that weight several times as much and these hold up surprisingly well.
The sound is very clear and dynamic.
Listening from classical to classic rock and things in between, as long as your music doesn't require unnatural amounts of bass, these speakers sound very natural and clear.
Listening to a remaster of Pink Floyd's Time, one can appreciate a lot of detail with these.
Or the sweet vibration of a violin, anything I play with this sounds very natural.
Speakers are rated by Sony as for "High-Resolution Audio", so it can reproduce analog audio from 24 bit recording with an expected good fidelity.
I'm pleasantly surprised how well these can keep up with our much larger speakers, and maintain clarity at higher volumes.
These speakers have a no-frills exterior design, just a well made acoustic box for the speakers.
Removing the grille, the three-speaker configuration is beautifully exposed.
The acoustic box works great. I can feel from the back the amount of air it moves.
On the back the is a single set of posts for the speaker cable. The posts are nice and can handle thick cables.
Overall, a very enjoyable speaker set.

Wireless, impressive camera
on December 15, 2025
Posted by: emiliosic
First it was very easy to install with two screws on the mounting bracket to the wall.
Then paired it via our Wi-Fi to the HomeBase 3, and setup was very simple.
It has a large battery and a large solar panel. It's expected to be self-sufficient when recording only activities, and can optionally be plugged in with an included weatherproof USB-C extension cable.
The camera appears on the app as two parts. The fixed camera, which can be adjusted and rotated manually once mounted, also has a motion sensor. This is meant to provide a wide angle.
The PTZ camera can be set at a default position and then automatically track persons, pets or vehicles and it would go back to its default position when there is no movement.
The illumination LEDs can be set to either white or red and blue.
The rotating camera also has two lenses, one at 1x zoom and other at 3x zoom. It will automatically switch, or can also be manually operated within the app.
One neat feature is that one can point at the image on the static camera and the PTZ will point and zoom on its own.
Once connected to the HomeBase 3 it supports person recognition like other cameras that offload some of the processing to the base station.
It's a bit large if used to the more discreet models, this is anything but discreet, and sometimes that's a good deterrent.
Installed in Northeast, one of the shortest days of the year and battery remains charged, so a great sign.
Very responsive even when away from home.

Great tool for straightening frizz
on November 23, 2025
Posted by: emiliosic
This is at its essence a hair dryer with a brush, however it works very differently:
One side of the brush has heating elements so it can heat up by blowing hot air and can also heat at higher temperatures on one side of the brush, with or without bowing air.
The 'Dry hair' setting does not blow air, so all the heat produced comes from the brush part.
Wet hair is more like a hair dryer with three speed settings and three temperature settings. It's electronically controlled so it's more quiet than hair dryers and more precise.
Our teens hair can be very frizzy and this does wonders. The only other time I've seen either of them with such a smooth and glossy hair is after a hairdresser appointment, so yes this is very good.
The handle can be a bit long to hold but it's manageable. It has some substance but it's not too heavy.
The brush is made of a combination of synthetic and natural boar hair.
Got it in Teal color and everything is matching from the color of the heater on the comb to the cable and plug. Works and looks great.

Solid case
on November 11, 2025
Posted by: emiliosic
This is a solid case. Well built. Starting with recyclable and nicely presented packaging, this case has some heft to it. Partly made with recycled plastic, gives it some rugged looks while still relatively thin. The edges feature a slight softer material to better absorb impacts.
The inside of the case has some small ridges and the back has very strong Magsafe magnets.
I took it on a trip and handled everything well. No issue with minor drops. This case is meant to easily handle 7ft drops.
It doesn't add a lot of weight to an already heavy phone. All the buttons except the camera action are fully covered.
Openings for speakers and USB-C connector are of the right size. Had no issues using different USB charging cables and the Magsafe charger on my car held the phone perfectly and charged normally as well.
The branding around the camera ring gives it some flare.
It also has openings for a lanyard on the right side, on top of the lock button.
Overall, solid case, with just enough ruggedness and good protection.

Best screen protector
on November 6, 2025
Posted by: emiliosic
This is the best screen protector, period.
With my previous phone, went through several generic and brand name screen protectors.
Installation is always tricky on these.
However this the most simple and clever installation system I've used.
The box that this came in. which is made of paper, is the installation tool itself.
First, use the three step screen cleaning process: Wet wipe, followed by a microfiber cloth and finishing with a lint removal adhesive sheet. The screen looks like new after this.
Then place the phone on top of the lower half of the box, put the top cover, holding the phone and then slowly pull the tab. Press a bit more and then remove the phone. The end result is a perfectly aligned screen protector with no bubbles. This is the only screen protector in which I did not have to fight any bubbles. Perfect installation. I was pleasantly surprised.
The screen protector itself is a bit thick, with rounded edges and protects the whole front of the phone. Because it has a blue light filter it slightly changes the hue, however got used to it in no time. After some time cannot even tell there is a screen protector on the phone.
ZAGG provides lifetime warranty on it.
Highly recommended. Not the cheapest option, the best product.

Best professional mouse
on October 16, 2025
Posted by: emiliosic
Besides specific gaming scenarios, this is un my opinion the best computer mouse.
I'm already using an MX series keyboard and had a travel MX mouse on my work computer.
Already had experience with the MX Master series at my home computer so I'm happy to add the MX Master 4 to my workflow.
I used an ergonomic mouse before and this is a happy middle ground. While it doesn't fit the hand in a handshake position, it still works in a slight angle, very similar to a typing position and not flat like a traditional mouse.
While older MX Master series mouse are as good as it gets, this takes it to a whole new level. Let me explain:
All the touch surfaces have been redesigned: the body of the mouse is now a hard plastic that is more resistant to oils. The buttons are now of a thick clear plastic with a dark background. This material is meant to prevent the 'polished' look that other Logitech products develop after a while, so it's expected to look like new for longer.
The bottom of the mouse has more sliding surfaces, and adds a ring around the sensor.
It now has exposed screws on the bottom so it should be easier to service/clean inside. There is no longer a need to peel off the sliding material, as it's all exposed on the bottom of the mouse (Not visible while in use).
The charging USB-C port remains on the front and can be used while charging. However the USB-C port, like in other models, cannot be used for data, so the mouse is always connected via wireless.
The main scrolling wheel is all metal, and can dynamically switch between step and freewheeling modes. This is configurable via the Options software or from the button in front of the wheel. The purpose for that button is also configurable.
On the right side there is a separate wheel that is normally configured for horizontal scrolling. This wheel does provide some friction so it can only scroll when intentionally pushed.
Behind this wheel there are three buttons. Two are close together are usually used as Back and Forward keys. The third button is meant to use with Expose or Control Center.
The surface where the thumb rests is now a large button that also provides haptic feedback. This is all new.
The default function for this button is to launch the Logitech Action Ring, that can be configured via their Options+ software and it's intended as application-specific ring with shortcuts. This was originally introduced with the MX Creative Console, which I'm also using, so I'm familiar with the action ring. This can be configured per application but there a are very few applications that are pre-defined, and mostly includes creative suites, conferencing and music applications, but for the most part you might have to build your own actions, and it's fairly straightforward to do so.
The haptic feedback is currently very limited, it works when using the action ring and in a handful of other cases that can be configured. I expect that the number of scenarios where haptic feedback works would increase. The amount of feedback force can be configured and I left it at it's lowest setting. It can pack a punch in higher settings that did not find comfortable.
Like other MX series devices, it can connect to three different devices (computers, phones, etc) and if the computers have the Logitech flow configured, can directly see each other on the local network (as in, not in a VPN), and the keyboard is also an MX series device, Flow can seamlessly switch control between computers when crossing the edge of the screen, as configured. This is a great way to share the same keyboard and mouse. It worked great for me, but doesn't work when my work laptop is on VPN, and this is a VPN-specific restriction. Normally this works very well in a desktop with two or three computers. One can manually switch the mouse by pressing the pairing button on the bottom, which has a device indicator light as well.
Recent Logitech devices, besides Bluetooth, support the 'Logitech Bolt' USB adapter. When using the adapter, the computer sees it as an USB device, and the computer's Bluetooth is not involved. I like this better on my macs, because I leave the adapter in their docking hub, and can use the keyboard and mouse during the boot password (FileVault), otherwise macOS no longer allows 3rd party Bluetooth devices at this stage until macOS started. It's important to me when using the laptop with its lid closed.
However, the MX Master 4 for Mac does not include the Bolt adapter, while the PC version (not Mac) is exactly the same hardware, with slight color variations, and does not include the adapter in the box and has to be purchased separately, while costing the same. I find this quite disingenuous. Because I already use an MX keyboard, I could pair it with my existing bolt adapter.
Overall, it's as good as it gets. Currently the best professional mouse bar none, although I'd argue that the PC version is better because it includes the Bolt adapter at the same price.
Note that the USB-C cable for charging is also not included. I can use the same cable that I use to charge my phone however and that's fine.

Well presented information
on October 15, 2025
Posted by: emiliosic
This is my first Oura ring, but used different smartwatches, and the ring has several benefits.
The ring itself, mine in Midnight ceramic, is perfectly polished and with a blue hue. Almost black, slightly blue. It's a great color.
The ring is a bit thick so it's taking me a while to get used to it. It also feels slightly loose because it has to fit through my thick knuckles. I spent a few days using the sizing kit before I ordered mine. The sizing kit is a great way to make sure to order the correct size and experience the feeling of wearing the ring.
The charge lasts about a week, and the bigger the ring, the slightly larger the battery, or so it seems.
It comes with an aluminum ring holder/charger that charges it fast, using an USB-C phone charger (not included).
The ring doesn't vibrate nor generates any notifications, so it's not a replacement for a smart watch in that sense, but it collects some of the same information and more.
Actual sensors include an accelerometer, temperature sensor and light sensors.
The temperature sensor is not found on smartwatches and this is very important in context with other measures.
For me the main point is that I can wear this to sleep and it's unobtrusive.
It gave me a lot of information on sleep patterns that I didn't know for sure and needed to find out. It can determine the quality of sleep, including REM, light and deep sleep., duration and when each stage occurs, if there are any disturbances. During the day it can correlate stress levels.
This information is very important and presented in a meaningful way that I have not seen anywhere else.
The reason I got this ring is the quality of information it can infer and that I could not get with a smartwatch.
The application is very polished and unobtrusive. While many smartwatches show mostly raw data, Oura provides more context.
As my main objective was to track sleep, after the first week of use I have a better understanding of the phases in the sleep cycle, quality and quantity of sleep and what can I do with that information.
Overall, it's a great complement if not a replacement for a smart watch. It can track physical activity as well as a watch but more consistently as I don't need to remove it, even while sleeping. Only downside is getting used to wearing a thicker ring.

High end features and quality at a better price
on October 1, 2025
Posted by: emiliosic
I've been using home projectors from many years and used several types from CRTs, DLPs and various other Epson home cinema projectors.
Use them usually at night and with a motorized screen.
However, I'm on a budget. I've been using a 1080p projector for several years, and was eyeing a 4K upgrade when this projector was released.
To me, the models within LS series are similar. The LS9000 is more affordable and produces 2200 lumens, while other models in this series are brighter.
To begin, I like the overall look of the projector. It's substantial in size and weights almost 30 Lb. The black case has a textured finish with a leather-like pattern. The lenses are rather large and includes a motorized lens cover when the projector is turned off.
Noise levels are what I expected, similar to other projectors. Its dust filter is large and easy to swap.
It has all the control options and inputs I'd ever want, including two HDMI 2.1 inputs, one wit eArc for audio return, trigger relay, which I use to control the screen, IR, Serial and Ethernet control.
Of particular, the Ethernet port is only for local-network control. It cannot be used for video and does not use an internet connection at all, it's only for local network control from a web page and other integrations like Control4 and others.
Connected the projector to a receiver using a 25ft Active HDMI cable (Redmere), and works great.
Upon initial setup, which is always challenging on ceiling-mounted projectors, the initial setup was a breeze. Although the image came all over the place and mostly missed the screen because I don't have the ceiling mount centered as I’d like but rather accommodating to our living room, it prompted for language, and then it displayed some numbers in differently flipped boxes, so it was intuitive to pick the one matching front ceiling mount position.
I was able to use the lens shift and focus without having to resort to keystone adjustments, so didn't loose any resolution. To me this is a big plus. Focus was also easy to operated and it's completely motorized, with two lens memory settings as well.
Once Ethernet is connected and initial passwords are set through the remote control, everything can be managed from a web page, so some adjustments are easier that way. Like a pro level projector it has lots of settings.
4K HDR movies come out beautifully with very dark blacks and had no issues whatsoever displaying dark and action scenes.
My main concern before installing this projector was that instead of 4K native LCD chips, it uses a 'Quad Pixel Shift', which means that for composing every frame, the internal lenses shift both vertically and horizontally faster than what the eye can see. This is not too different than in most other 4K projectors including DLPs and others with 3LCDs.
My concerns were unfounded because the images look stunning, and cannot see any pattern related to that. While the LCDs are not natively 4K it does produce a 4K image (3840 x 2160 pixels).
Also note that this being a pro grade projector does not include speakers.
Like most projectors at this level, it handles HDR10+ images but does not support Dolby Vision, and be weary of cheap ones that claim that they do, because unlike a TV, there are many variables between the projector's output and what's ultimately displayed on the screen.
One thing that I'm slightly disappointed is that 3D is no longer supported on newer projectors, however my old 3D DVDs never looked that well to begin with.
This is a laser projector, and it's rated for about 20.000 hours. The light component (laser) is not replaceable. Because there is no lamp, warm-up time is almost instant and cooling is quick.
Overall, this is a fantastic value for a laser 4K projector. I'm pleased with the image and how everything works without any issues. It shows the decades of experience in offering projectors of about every kind.

It would be odd that a gaming PC doesn't have a DisplayPort. If it has USB-C or Tunderbolt ports, get an adapter from USBC-C to DisplayPort. I'm not sure it will work with HDMI because of the refresh rates

Step into virtual reality with this Oculus Rift S PC-powered headset. The advanced optics produce a sharp display with bright, vivid colors, and Oculus Insight tracking removes the need for external sensors to convert movements into virtual reality. This Oculus Rift S PC-powered headset has a fit wheel that secures the headset with a quick twist.

Will this work for someone with an IPD greater than 70? What is your IPD and how is it working for you?

It has a single display, and IPD can be adjusted in software. Not ideal, but can work

Sets up in minutes with the Linksys app.

Will this work with CenturyLink? I didn't see anything on this

Yes , but it depends. I currently have Verizon Fios, so I think it's the same setup.

I initially ordered Fios without a router, with Ethernet directly from the ONT. This definitely works. Connect the ONT's Ethernet cable directly to the internet port. You might have to call the provider to 'release DHCP', for it to work, if replacing another router, or it should work on its own overnight.
If the account is set up so you're required to use their router, then you still can disable WiFi on their router and connect this to one of the ethernet ports on the router. Once you set it up initially via the phone app, change the connection type to 'Bridge Mode' (From the app is simpler, but it can also be done from the desktop).
Note that this is more or less the same with any other WiFi router.
If you then add more mesh nodes, then there isn't anything else special to do here. It will work.

See what you hear on the Echo Show, and enjoy sing-alongs on Amazon Music. Eight microphones on the device pick up your voice from anywhere in the room, meaning you get exactly what you're asking for. The Echo Show is compatible with Alexa for seamless visual enhancement of your experience.

Will it allow multiple timers with a different name, i.e. "Alexa set timer for six hours for meatloaf" and then "Alexa set timer for 4 hours for cake" Then Alexa will in six hours will say meatloaf, and in four hours will say cake.

Yes, Alexa devices support multiple, simultaneous timers. This is how the Alexa platform works, it's not specific to particular speakers.

Prepare a variety of meals faster with this nonstick Ninja cooker. It operates as much as 70 percent faster than traditional methods, and the digital control panel lets you select the function your recipe needs. This 1000W Ninja cooker holds up to 6 quarts and includes a stainless steel rack for steaming.

Can you fry chicken in it?

While it can fit a whole chicken, it does not fry. Look at the "Ninja Foodi" models that are similar to this but add Air Fry and crisp modes.

Get more out of your home theater setup with this Sonos Beam compact smart soundbar. A 5-speaker with five amplifier setup delivers rich, big sound to your room, while the single-cable connection allows for fast, easy setup. Compatible with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant voice control, this Sonos Beam compact smart soundbar lets you control the volume and power with the just sound of your voice.

Can I connect a turntable to the Beam? If so, which ones are compatible?

The beam doesn't have an analog input. It can be done, but you'll need a turntable with a line out (Not phono out) and an analog to TOSLINK adapter (TOSLINK is a digital optical cable).
The Play:5 from Sonos have analog input than can be connected directly to a turntable..

Will this device pair well with the vizio m50-e1? Not sure if my tv has the necessary ports for this device.

You'll need to either use the HDMI port that's labeled 'ARC' on the TV to connect to the soundbar, or use the audio output of the TV with an extra SPDIF to TOSLINK adapter.
