This is more than just a speaker - it's a journey. Starting from the very basic elements of sound and speakers, your children will build a deeper understanding as they move toward assembling their Speaker Cube. At every step, exploration is encouraged and curiosity is rewarded.

Kids and dad had fun
on May 30, 2017
Posted by: emiliosic
from Wakefield, MA
Spent a few hours with my kids (7 and 9 ys/old girls) who enjoyed the physics/sounds experiments and completed it by promptly building the speaker.
It's an interesting product. There are two parts to it: The first is a science project on how electro magnets and permanent magnets work together to generate sound.
Note that it requires an iOS device (iPhone or iPad) to go though the educational steps - It doesn't work with Android, although the speaker should work fine as a standard Bluetooth.
First, walks out kids and parent to plug into the wall adapter and pair the sound controller via Bluetooth to an iPhone or iPad. Then it goes through a series of fun experiments like a 'magnet launcher' until kids are able to generate sounds via a magnet and coil provided. Then it goes to explain how sound is generated, including a series of videos made by a pair of engineers at Bose, until kids are able to play a somewhat decent audio from their experiment, building a paper speaker.
Finally, the app walks through putting together the real speaker, which is the second part of the project.
The speaker itself sounds surprisingly well. It's a real Bose speaker, very capable with decent bass and overall very clear and loud sound. The cube is made of plastic translucent walls held together by clips. Then the kids finish the project by picking from a pack of paper covers with different patterns of their choice, or from a grid paper that's easy for kids to form into patterns of their choice.
Some considerations: The plastic clips give away that is a science project. If they had a more seamless way of holding the cube together might look better. Also the thin plastic and paper covers while a nice touch might not be durable long term (Although it holds up just fine, we're planning on leaving the speaker on a shelf).
The cube can change colors with a button and a slider, or can play a rainbow or colors or follow the music, with the lights off when there is no music, except for a white BT indicator on the rear.
The BT pairing is simple, and through the app can control the lights as well, but there is no way of controlling the lights from the phone/tablet once the project app is complete, so it's done from the buttons on the back of the cube. It can remember several devices, and can pair to two BT devices at the same time.
There is no battery, it has to remain plugged in. A battery option would've been nice.
It feels that it was built by engineers who genuinely wanted to teach kids in a fan way, and it shows in every aspect of the speaker, from its looks, to the detailed and fun explanations and activity to the surprisingly good sound.

Listen to music hands-free with this LG wireless headset. It lets you answer or ignore a call with voice commands, and the wireless earbuds charge when they're resting inside the neckband, ensuring they're ready for use. The neckband of this LG wireless headset provides vibration alerts for incoming calls and texts, so you'll never miss a message.

Disappointed
on May 19, 2017
Posted by: emiliosic
from Wakefield, MA
I was looking forward enjoying these but I cannot recommend them at any price. There are many issues with this.
The headphones are, as stated, truly wireless. The left earpiece is the 'primary' that pairs to the phone, and connects with the neckband and the right earpiece.
The neckband, which is quite large and weights 2 oz, serves as a charging station and can be set to vibrate when receiving a call. It seems it can give the headphones a full additional charge.
LG sells an additional charging base so the neckband wouldn't be necessary but it's not included in the package.
There is a single control button on either earpiece, which perform different functions with single or double clicks. There is no volume control (it has to be done from the phone), and there is no way to skip back songs, but it can skip forward with a double click. Only the left earpiece can trigger BT pairing, so keep it in mind.
Sound: It sounds just OK. It's programmed to be bass-heavy and can be changed by installing an app (Android and iOS) for a more natural sound or more treble. The sound is natural and acceptable bass but doesn't have depth. Higher tones sound distorted and metallic. Honestly, a pair of BT headphones I got last year for $ 10 sound actually a lot better than these.
For audio (podcasts) the audio is fine, but for any type of music from jazz, instrumental or pop, the treble sounds are problematic.
For phone calls, it has a single microphone and sounds horrible. Use them with an iPhone and Siri could not understand me well enough. Bad sign. So I used the app that's available for these to record a voice note. The result sounded distant, noisy and with some amount of echo, so it wouldn't be good for voice calls.
Fit: The neckband feels like a large horseshoe and at 2 oz, it can be felt around the neck. Two sizes of earplugs are included in the box. I usually wear small or medium, but the smaller wouldn't fit right. The earpieces have an unusually large prong and then then all the weight of the earpiece is hanging from the ear, so they constantly fall, even when sitting still, and keep on trying to adjust it but inevitably gets loose and falls, plus hang off the ear in an odd position, sticking out.
When the earpieces are plugged into the neckband, they stay secure and start charging.
Bluetooth: Being disappointed with the sound with an iPhone, I then paired it with a new Sony receiver that supports NFC pairing, APTX and LDAC. The headphones only support SBC, so keep audio expectations in check. It connects via BT 4.2 and LE (for notifications). The Bluetooth range is excellent. I can walk two rooms away from the phone without issue.
So there are many cons to recommend these to anyone: Audio is not good enough, the neckband is too large and unnecessary. It would've been better for me to include the charging dock instead. Unless you have large ears and large ear canals, fit will likely be an issue. They stick out too much and fall off, without anything to hold them in case they fall.

Add stability to your home network with the Amped Wireless HELIOS-EX Wi-Fi Extender. With DirectLink technology, it avoids signal loss by adding another 5GHz Wi-Fi channel to the standard setup, which it then uses strictly for receiving signal from the source. This Amped Wireless HELIOS-EX Wi-Fi Extender covers an area of up to 12,000 sq. ft. and includes four Gigabit network ports.

Nice hardware. Software has potential
on May 6, 2017
Posted by: emiliosic
from Wakefield, MA
What this product is: It extends Wi-Fi networks, by using a dedicated radio to connect to an existing Wi-Fi router. Then it creates a new Wi-Fi network (The extended network) with a separate radio for 5 GHz network and a 2.4 GHz network, using the same IP network from the upstream router (i.e. It is not a flat IP network with multiple Wi-Fi networks).
What this product is not: It's not a router (i.e. it needs an existing Wi-Fi network) and it's not an access point (i.e. it cannot connect over Ethernet to an existing network, only over Wi-Fi).
The hardware is nice: The three Wi-Fi antennas are removable. The enclosure has a nice patterned finish, and can either lay flat on vertical with the included pedestal, which I'd suggest to use because it generates some heat and has vents on both sides. It has some very bright lights on the front, which change color depending on the status (but thankfully, do not blink). Lights are very bright but recessed, and has a physical switch to turn the status lights on or off. Very nice. It has a power switch push button, and five gigabit ports to connect PCs, printers, media players, etc. Also has an USB 3.0 to use as a file server, with an external hard drive or USB stick.
Radios: The 5 GHz radio has configurable channel widths of 80/40/20. (Some few last-gen routers have 160 MHz channels, but are still very rare).
Lots of advanced, low level settings for wireless that are set correctly set by default: TxBeanforming enabled with MU-MIMO disabled, etc.
Very detailed settings for radio power, channels can be left to auto of statically set. The comprehensiveness of the radio options are something I rarely see on home network gear. For the novice can be confusing, but the default values are OK, so if you don't know, leave it as is and should work fine.
For the upstream home network, by default locks into specific channels from the upstream router. It can manually set to auto.
Supports multiple guest networks, that can be separated between 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz radios, with different IDs and permissions. It also has some basic scheduling.
Doesn't support VLANs but supports spanning tree (for business routers), and supports Radius for Wi-Fi authentication (Business use).
This range extender is unique because it has a dedicate radio for upstream connectivity, so bridging does not materially degrade speed as with other extenders.
The range of the Wi-Fi signal is excellent. It covers a medium sized house with two floors by itself with no issue.
However, there are some peculiarities that can be a deal breaker for some: First, the network SSID (The name of the Wi-Fi network) has to be different than of the main router. I find this to be a real caveat because one has to remember to configure every Wi-Fi device with the new network ID, and walking around the house with a PC, phone or tablet, they will try to hold onto the already connected SSID instead of jumping to the closer access point. I tried to manually rename the extended network, while locking on a channel on the home router, and it ended up creating a network loop and had to factory-reset the extender to get it back. I think many buyers won't be aware of this issue until purchased.
Another major issue is that while this is a Wi-Fi extender and works well as that, it cannot easily be set as an access point by connecting it to Ethernet, if needs change.
A minor issue that is also common with other routers is that the file sharing cannot be disabled, even with nothing connected to the USB port. It's constantly advertising itself as a file service although it can't do it.

Capable receiver for network audio and HDMI source
on May 1, 2017
Posted by: emiliosic
from Wakefield, MA
This is the 2017 successor of the DN1070 (I'm upgrading from an STR-DN1040). The main improvement being support for Dolby Atmos. In Atmos format, instead of indicating which speaker the audio comes from, it contains the position where the sound comes from; the receiver is then calibrated with the speakers it has and dives them accordingly.
This receiver supports various combinations of speakers from stereo to 7.2 (.2 is up to two subwoofers), and up to 7 main speakers, plus bi-amp.
It also supports a second audio zone with stereo pre-amp and powered speakers.
The second HDMI output can be configured as aither part of the primary or as a third zone (HDMI Zone).
So two HDMI outputs, and six HDMI inputs. All the HDMI inputs are now in the back. All 6 HDMI 2.0a inputs support 4K, HDR, HDCP 2.2.
Sound: I like the sound produced by this receiver. Sound is much more clear and crisp compared to older Sony units. Sound is very neutral and has extensive calibration options. It holds up well with either low volume or when playing loudly.
Connectivity: Is where this receiver shines. Start with an audio processor that can decode any source up to 192 KHz and 24-bit, including Dolby Atmos, DTS:X, so it plays UHD discs, and audio sources like DSD, Wav, AIFF, FLAC, ALAC, AAC, MP3, etc.
It supports Bluetooth input and output, and can pair a phone or headset using NFC. It also supports the new LDAC BT codec for high-res audio over BT. Pressing a button on the remote can transmit audio to BT headphones instead of the speakers (ie for night listening), or to receive audio from a phone or tablet. Very nice.
Network connectivity:
- One of the few receivers to support Spotify Connect.
- Apple Airplay (Audio) works nicely: Shows the song information and cover image on the TV (The name of the song is not displayed on the receiver's own display however) - The play controls on the remote also work on the receiver and volume can be controller from either iPhone or the receiver.
- Google's Chromecast( audio only): Works very well. For example, listening ESPN radio from the TuneIn app, can close the app on the phone and still works through the receiver, so the audio goes straight to it. Also paired with no issues with our Google Home, which can also control the volume. It also supports grouping so multi devices can play the same chromecast source (Create a group on the Google Home app). Name of the song shows up on the TV and play/pause controls works with Chromecast sources, even when as part of a group.
- DLNA: To complete the network sources, it supports DLNA, which also supports DLNA Party mode, which Sony calls SongPal. So using the SongPal app on a phone or tablet (Android and iOS), can link multiple DLNA devices together to play the same music, for whole home audio.
There are two Android/iOS apps from Sony that work with the receiver: "Video & TV Sideview" is mostly for video sources, and can be used as a remote control (Over Wi-Fi). SongPal is for music and instead of a traditional remote control it's organized for streaming different audio sources to the receiver. It controls volume and other audio features.
Interface: Same as Sony receivers for the past few years. Sony has the best interface with intuitive graphics and appropriate on-screen descriptions. The volume controls and other features show up on the screen (unlike other models that wouldn't display volume bars when playing a video). The task based interface is very intuitive.
Power usage: Leaving HDMI CEC on but Network standby off, when the receiver is on standby, uses 0.1 Watts (So almost nothing). Older Sony receivers used a lot more power in standby so this is a great improvement. When Network standby is on, the receiver is never truly off, so it still uses an (excessive) 25 to 30 watts, so end up disabling network standby (which allows a Chromecast, Airplay or SongPal to 'wake up' the receiver. It's not clear on the screen menu that it will use so much power when this feature is on. My older STR-DN1040 used a lot more power when HDMI CEC was enabled, so Sony fixed this issue. When the unit is on, it varies from 50 Watts and up, depending on what it's doing. It also supports HDMI pass-through when the unit is off, but didn’t test it, since I'm using the receiver with a projector so I need the receiver on. I'd estimate it will need to draw more power when on standby if HDMI pass-through is on. Sony isn't forthcoming on power usage, so I'm using a P3 'Kill-a-watt' to measure.
Analog inputs/outputs: There are three stereo inputs, one digital coax and one optical input. There are two analog (composite) video inputs and one output. Then there is a stereo output (Labeled TV) and another set for Zone 2. The analog inputs don't seem to be assignable but the coax and optical are assignable.
Audio calibration is easy and comprehensive. It includes a stereo mic to auto-calibrate with far more accuracy than previous models.
Minor Caveats:
- No AM radio, only FM with no RDS. Just basic FM, and there is a detachable pigtail antenna on the back.
- None of the HDMI ports support MHL (ie power over HDMI for some phones).
- Not all the inputs are available through the remote control. Some inputs like Video1 require pressing Home or 'Watch' and navigating to the input. Harmony remotes don't have this issue and all the inputs are directly addressable, because Sony maintains the same remote codes through its line. In retrospect, having a few extra buttons on the remote would've been simpler. Just to make it clear, the receiver supports far more commands than what the remote has. An universal remote like Harmony can make use of all of the available IR codes.
- 6 HDMI inputs is nice, but could use more. For example the 2014 version of this had 8 HDMI inputs. At least, moving all the HDMI ports to the back is more usable.
- There are no pre-programmed sound fields. Older units had selectors for Stadium sound, concert halls, etc. Which would add extra echo to the sound. Since Sony is now concentrating on better sound and simplicity, it removed these somewhat gimmicky features. However it introduces 'Phantom Surround' that adjusts existing speakers to create the effects of having rear surround when using 5 speakers. Also note that it supports multi-channel output from stereo sources, so it can use all its speakers with stereo, or set it to use the front speakers only.
- While Chromecast Audio, Airplay Audio, DLNA are useful and work very well on this, support for Chromecast video, Airplay video and Miracast would've been better.
Overall, it's a great receiver, with clear, detailed sound, and will handle any HDMI or audio streaming source.

Much improved model
on March 25, 2017
Posted by: emiliosic
from Wakefield, MA
Over the years, owned several vacuums, including a few cordless.
This is by far the best stick vacuum in the house.
Compared to our older Dyson DC56, it's slightly bigger, slightly heavier and a lot more powerful while being quieter. It's really a big difference compared to the older model. It's actually impressive, the suction is higher than on many corded vacuums.
The vacuum is very modular and anything that's involved with dirt can be cleaned. The whole dustbin assembly can be removed from the vacuum.
It has two operation modes: A standard and full. The full suction mode feels a lot more powerful and likely overkill for most uses.
Dyson claims it has up to 40 minutes battery. I could not test this but cleaned different rooms and battery indicated 2 out of 3 bars.
The 'Animal' model comes with the handheld vacuum, a 'dock', power adapter, the extension rod, a direct drive floor cleaner (it has its own motor), a mini motorized tool (Great for car seats and sofas), a combination brush, crevice extension (fixed length) and a soft dusting brush (Good to clean appliances because the bristles are very soft).
The step-up model from this is the 'Absolute'. Besides colors, the only difference I could find is that it has an additional soft roller head (the whole assembly with a soft roller for hard floors).
The roller that comes is fine for both carpets and hard floors, and it's designed in a way that hair is not easily tangled. Lots of other vacuums we had would collect lots of hairs on the brush, making it messy to clean.
The way the dustbin is cleaned lifts the stainless steel filter against a rubber ring, so it's cleaned on its own. On the older model we had sometimes we had to pick through the bin to remove hair. Not with this.
Since this model has a thin stainless steel mesh as the primary filter, a lot less dust goes though the top of the vacuum.
It also has a washable filter before the engine and a small HEPA filter before the exhaust. Because this filter is the last, I don't see the need to ever replace it.
Way I didn't like is the design of the 'dock'. It's functional and should work well, but have to drill holes on the wall to hang it, and then run the power cable from it. I would much preferred to have the option of a pedestal, but it's not available for this model. It can also be powered by plugging it in directly to the power adapter, which is what we do.
The other issue is that while it's overall very light and easy to use, because the engine is on the handle, it might get a bit heavy after a while, compared with upright vacuums or other stick vacuums where the engine Is near the bottom and thus more balanced.
Like in other Dyson models, the battery is not easily replaceable.
Also the top of the vacuum is spay-painted, and will likely scratch.
Also, to keep in mind, if you have older Dyson models, the tools won't work on this because the clip is on the tool, not on the vacuum. I was looking for a flexible crevice tool and it's not available for this model.

Among the best

Let me start by mentioning that I had every version of Apple TV. I also have two Roku, and Amazon TV sticks and a Chromecast. Each platform has its virtues and drawbacks.
Apple TV is a requirement to watch movies or listen music from Apple, and the app library is extensive. It supports every major TV channel provider, Airplay works flawlessly, and some games are interesting for occasional play.
The 'TV' app integration is very good at bridging diverse content, although more content providers need to get on board to make it truly useful.
Single sign-on is a much needed welcome feature that lacks on other platforms, but most cable TV providers are still not on-board, although many content providers are.
In my case, the other main reason while I'm on my 3rd 4th gen Apple TV, is because of the 'Channels' app. When connected with an HD HomeRun prime, and a cable-card from my TV provider (Verizon), I'm saving about $ 40 in rental fees, and all channels except some Fox and Nat Geo that are encrypted and this app cannot decode, it works flawlessly. (For those channels, there's an App).
Browsing through apps is very fast and smooth.
The control is intuitive and simple to use, although it takes some learning. I'm not entirely sold on the trackpad instead of arrow buttons. Most of the time we use a Harmony remote to control it instead of the built-in remote. On the plus side, the Apple TV remote can also control the TV or receiver turning it on or off, setting the correct input and controls volume.
As per content, there is no 4K or HDR support, and most notably there is no way to watch UltraViolet or Amazon content directly, but can be used with Airplay from Amazon or Vudu apps on an iOS device.
Voice control from the remote works well, and integration with the iOS remote for keyboard input works nicely in most cases.

Much better than Fire 7", for slightly more money

Last got Fire 7" for my kids, with an Amazon Freetime subscription. These are very good for the price with two flaws: The screen is good and much better than other Android devices at 7" but not great, and got the 8 Mb version with I would not recommend in hindsight. Because Android's sub-par management on SD cards, got these this year. It has a much better screen, not only larger but with better resolution, adequate speakers for its price, it's fast enough and overall more enjoyable to use. 16 Gb is the minimum I'd recommend, even with SD cards because some apps just work better with internal storage, and some apps even stored in SD will still use some amount of internal storage.
It also has Alexa voice support.
The main reason for these tablets in my case is the Freetime subscription that has unlimited access to thousands of age-appropriate books, hundreds (or thousand) of free apps and heavily curved web access per age presets. Amazon Fire OS has a decent support for multi-user and in particular kids accounts. My kids are 7 and 9. They spend a lot of time on games as expected but also read a good amount of books.

Great for the money, with more potential

Let me start by clarifying that I had every generation on Apple TV, currently have two Roku and have the 1st gen Amazon stick since launch.
For the technically inclined, this runs Amazon's version of Android and side-loading is very easy installing a file manager from the Amazon app store.
Integration with Amazon services is excellent as one would expect, for video content, music, photos and Alexa commands and voice search.
The main reason I installed this is to use with an HD HomeRun. The HD HomeRun isn't great because de-interlacing isn't good, but it's not Amazon's fault. I also side-loaded Kodi, which took me no more than 10 minutes.
As for video, there is access to Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, Sling, Playstation Vue and most TV channels apps, but notably there is no way to access UltraViolet content (Flixster, Vudu, etc).
On the plus side, it works very well with Kodi and has an official Plex app for home content.
In that regards, Roku still has more channels, but the Android versions sometimes are nicer if they're adapted specifically to Amazon Fire TV, while Roku is simpler and more consistent.
It's very fast, the remote is RF so the stick can be hidden out of sight.
The interface is very responsive and pleasant to use.

Protect and boost the functionality of your 7th, 8th, and 9th Gen iPad with this graphite Logitech Combo Touch keyboard case. The precision trackpad allows for easy navigation, while the well-spaced backlit keys ensure effortless typing, even in dark environments. This Logitech Combo Touch keyboard case has a smooth texture for easy handling, and the adjustable kickstand provides comfortable viewing angles.

How do I sync the Logitech track Keyboard to the iPad?

No syncing necessary. It's not bluetooth, and has no batteries. There are three contact dots on the side of the iPad. Those are the 'Smart Connector'. The keyboard has pins that connect there and works like a laptop keyboard

Simplify personal grooming with this Panasonic ARC 5 electric shaver. The ultra-fast motor and five-blade system make short work of facial hair by providing up to 70,000 cross-cuts per minute,. This Panasonic ARC 5 electric shaver has a built-in pop-up trimmer that makes it easy to sculpt mustaches, beards and sideburns.

Can you purchase a charge/clean station separately to work with this razor?

I don't think so. The charging tips on my shaver that does not have the washing system does not have the electric contracts on the back of the shaver. Get it as a kit.

Can you copy on photo paper. From a camera?

Like other laser printers, they can print to some photo papers, but my suggestion would be to use an ink based printer for photos.
Laser pictures are very good at printing pictures on plain paper for advertisements, but not on photo paper for storage

will it scan two sided to two sided through the scanner?

No, it has no duplex printing and no duplex scanning. Consider the almost identical model MFC-L3770CDW that has both duplex scanning and printing

Is the display dim/dull? That was an issue with the 2018 G3

It's a WVA display, it's not dull. This would be an improvement from the 2018, from what I read. It might not be the best display but it's bright with decent angle view

Is this vr ready and does it have an additional hdd memory slot?

It passes the Oculus Compatibility Check.
It should have an empty internal 2.5" SATA bay. I didn't open it, but it has the hardware and space for it
