This laptop is absolutely AMAZING.
Let me start with the price...I was looking for the cheapest laptop with a GTX 1060, and I couldn't find anything less than 1,500. So, I decided to check on Best Buy. I found this laptop, and I was scared of what the other specs would be. Usually, they sacrifice other specs for one good spec. So, in this case, I figured the processor would be a cheaper one, and the screen wouldn't be great, etc.
I was surprised to find they included the i7-6700HQ, which is a quad core and has a surprising boosted speed of 3.5GHz. A fantastic processor for gaming and other activities. Combining this processor with the GTX 1060 GPU (used for processing graphics), makes this machine a gaming beast. Let me include, this comes with the 6GB version of the GTX 1060, which is quite a bit. I don't see you needing anymore VRAM. I can run any game at 1080p on the highest settings and experience no issues.
For example: GTA and American Truck Simulator.
The screen:
The screen is 1080p, and is absolutely beautiful! Very bold colors. The 17 inches allows you an excellent gaming experience.
The one thing they sacrificed for this laptop was the ram. Usually you see 16gb of ram in gaming rigs, but in this one they give you only 8gb. Now let me tell you, you do not need any more than 8gb. I listen to music while playing many games, and I have plenty of other applications opened, and I still only use 5-6gb of ram at MAX. There are two slots, so you could add another 8gb if you feel the need. Ram is cheap, so it's not problem.
The keyboard is absolutely fantastic. The key spacing is perfect, and typing on it is very quiet. It's requires the perfect amount of pressure to type. It doesn't make my fingers sore or tired, and I also don't accidentally hit a key and type something. Perfect keyboard. It has a number pad, which is good for many games.
The touchpad is also VERY amazing. It is the perfect size, and is very soft and at the perfect place. I usually don't like touchpads but this one is very good.
The speaker: created by Bang & Olufsen and is perfected. It goes to a decent volume, while using it I put the volume on 60-70. The sound is very good. The bass is mainly my concern, and it sounds great lol. Everything else is great. I did put the volume on 100 and heard no static or problems. Very surprised they put such a good speaker on a laptop!
Venting: The power this laptop packs is very high, which also produces a ton of heat. They have put two vents on the back, which do release a ton of heat during very resource heavy games. Normal use, or even lesser games, it feels fine. When playing games like GTA, do make sure you have something between your lap and your PC, or it will be hot! Not hot enough to burn your leg though. It does remain a decent temperature. There is what I assume an air intake on the left side of the laptop.
The battery life is very good, especially for a gaming laptop. While just listening to music, writing this review, and playing a flash game, it tells me I have nearly 8 hours of power left (on 100%). While I am playing GTA it tells me I have 4 hours of power left (from 100%). Please do note, if you're running on battery and you're not plugged in, performance is significantly lower versus when it's plugged in. This is to save battery. So, if your games are lagging, make sure your laptop is plugged in! The charger is very big, and sends through 230 watts of power. You will not use all of this power, do realize, it also charges the battery.
This laptop packs a 1TB hard drive, alongside a 128gb SSD. The hard drive has a usable 919gb of storage. The SSD has a usable 118gb of storage.
The OS (Windows 10) comes on the SSD, which allows the laptop to start up in a few seconds. It does take up 16.8gb. There is a file with old Windows files. You do not need these for anything. It is also another 19gb or something like that (I deleted them already, I forgot the exact size). To delete them safely, type in disk cleanup, click it, set it to Windows (C:), click "Clean up system files", once again click Windows (C:), wait for it to load (fairly quick), and uncheck everything, and make sure the only thing check marked is previous windows installations and also Windows upgrade log files. This will free up tons of space on your SSD.
I recommend you save your main programs to your SSD, which should be labeled as "Windows (C)". I recommend this for browsers, Steam, Origin, etc. This will allow the programs to open very fast. Other programs that are larger (do this for games too or you won't have any space on your SSD!!), put them on your drive "D:". It should be named "DATA (D:)". This is your hard drive, and has way more space for you to use up.
You are going to want to update your drivers and Windows. This is where I start my next section:
HP has done an excellent job for drivers and updates. There is a question mark in a blue circle on your task bar on the right side. Click this. You will see My PC (which does say HP Omen under it), you're going to want to click "Updates", "check for updates and messages", and give it a few minutes to load it all up. Once it's done, you're going to want to click "download and install". Give it the time to set it all up. You may be prompted to restart your laptop, you want to wait to do this. You'll be prompted to do it with other programs. So, wait to restart only once, don't restart every 2 minutes lol.
For your graphics card drivers, you have to download the GeForce Experience. To do this, go to http://www.geforce.com/drivers and download the Automatic Driver Updates. It will prompt you to install, click agree, wait for it to finish installing. Once installed and setup, go to the drivers section. Click "check for updates" and allow it to finish.
You're good to go! Make sure to check for updates regularly. Do it through HP and GeForce. This will keep your laptop up to speed!
For Windows updates: search Windows for "check for updates", click, "check for updates", and there ya go!
I recommend you go to your power settings, click the battery icon on your taskbar (on the right side), right click it, "power options", and select "High performance".
I would recommend this laptop! A very good laptop!
10000/10 overall rating.
