Fans of this love letter to baseball will be pleased with this DVD edition from Universal. The picture and sound are decent, if not spectacular. The lush greens of the ball field look very good, but the picture is a 1.85 non-anamorphic transfer, which occasionally does a disservice to the film. Audio is presented in Dolby Digital 2.0. This is a minor quibble, as Field of Dreams is not a sound-intensive movie. Where the disc really hits a home run is with the extras. For starters, there's a very informative commentary track from director Phil Alden Robinson and cinematographer John Lindley. The track is loaded with information and sure to delight viewers. Also chock full of insights is the spectacular "Video Scrapbook." Clocking in at 90 minutes, this is as in-depth a look at the making of Field of Dreams as viewers are going to find. It includes interviews with the film's cast and crew, as well as with W.P. Kinsella, author of the novel that inspired the film. Simply excellent. Also offered are the standard production notes, bios, and trailer. With a little tweaking of the picture and sound, this DVD would be better than perfect. As it is, it's still the definitive edition of one of Hollywood's truly great movies.
