Take your computer audio to the next level with this Asus Xonar DX PCI Express sound card that features Dolby Digital Live, Dolby ProLogic IIx, Dolby Headphone and Dolby Virtual Speaker decoders for immersive audio.
I bought this card as an upgrade for the Realtek HD sound that comes as onboard sound with my late model Intel chipset. The technician who custom made my computer assured me that the onboard sound is good. I have high standards when it comes to music and decided otherwise. The Assus Xonar DX has Cirrus Logic 24/192 DACs, comparable to Burr Browns to be found in good CD players. I listen to WAV files using Sony MDR-V6 headphones which you will see practically every studio musician and film director using (they're about 75 bucks) and I have yet to hear better. The Assus Xonar DX has much much better detail and subtlety than the Realtek, but I'm interested in really good sound quality for music. I'm very glad I spent the money.. Highly recommended. If you're just a very casual listener you may not especially notice the difference - as some other reviewers I've read have said about themselves.
What's great about it: Audiophile grade sound
What's not so great: Manual/software switching between rear and frontphones
