I have always had alpine devices but wanted to give this a try. Biggest complaint aside for the poor interface is that the buttons don't respond sometimes. In order to fix it I will have to remove the faceplate and put it back on.

do I need to run Google Chrome to use chromecast
You only need google chrome if you are looking to do things from your computer. If you are using your phone or tablet then the individual apps support casting like YouTube and Netflix.

chromecast into smart dvd player
I have an older TV and the hdmi port Is broken. Can the chromecast be plugged into my smart dvd player?
If the port on your player is meant for input and you can select that source then yes. However if it is meant for output or you aren't able to choose that source to display then no.

can you view showbox movies from a samsung ?
You will have to download a different video player that can cast. One I mhave seen work is "AllCast" and once you have that you use external video player from showbox

can I mirror to my smart tv any website from my android?
Depending on your device you can just mirror your whole screen through Chromecast app. However that feature is in beta and may not be as smooth as desired. Firefox does support casting from a phone but again quality may vary
