So I have to say from numerous time of connecting fiber. Always check the tips and connection hubs. Ready made from a factory usually has some dust on the connections even is capped/covered. This was no exception. Use some canned air and gently burst.

how do I connect the digital optical audio cable?
I want my cable box and xbox all to be connected to the soundbar, how do I do that?
That completely depends on what soundbar and receiver you have. If you don't have a receiver you can connect the TV to the soundbar in most cases and have the audio just pass through (check your TV manual for settings changes)

I can't get these cables to firmly connect to the ports. Any tricks?
Audi fiber cables with usually have a little play. Just firmly insert but don't try to hulk it in.

How many joules do I need for adequate protection of a 55"Smart TV, Cable box, Stereo receiver w/CD player?
You would need to add up the wattage used by each item then usually double it to be safe.
