Replacement for my older Garmin

If you are used to Garmin GPS, TomTom takes some time to get used to. I prefer the look of Garmin map but the TomTom has nice features. Works good and gets me to my destination without issues. Price was lower than a similar Garmin with similar features. I would buy another TomTom again.

Great price point for a mid range intel processor with touch screen running on windows 8. A great looking laptop...if looks matter. A bit heavy for the small form factor but the battery life is 6+ hours. Screen is clear. I would love it even more if Toshiba made the screen detachable into a tablet and keep the same price point. Depends on your internet connection. For a netflix size download there may be buffering at some point.

I need a cd drive and I know they sell tthem sepretly
Yes you can....if you really want to spend the money on a usb cd drive. Really no need to because software can be downloaded and thumb drives have the same or more capacity. And most music and video you can get online.

Can the memory be upgraded on this unit?
No. It cannot....and why would you want to when you can go buy one that already has the amount of memory you want. Unless is a desktop, I would not recommend adding memory to a laptop

would this be sufficient for a college student?
No. Great for HS student and someone doing single task processing. Opening too many web pages really slow the response time. Too limited on memory and storage for the average college student for music and video files even if you add external storage, it is a hassle. Add another $600-$800 more for a better laptop and it will last you through 4 year s of college.
