I'm looking for something to use near our security dvr - so that I can connect an ethernet cable from the dvr to the extender (our router is at the other end of the house), would this work if I plugged it in near the dvr and connected the ethernet?

What size wine bottles does this hold?
The typical size of bottle (Bordeaux) fits best. The slightly wider styles of bottles (like Champagne) will fit, but are tight. I usually put these bottles in neck first.

Can you take any or all of the wire racks out?
Yes. They all come out. I have some bottles which are a little bigger than this configuration, so I have to move them slightly.

Will it work with Microsoft Surface Pro 3?
Yes. I use a USB hub so the keyboard is plugged into the hub, but it works perfectly. I don't have the Surface keyboard attached, but it should work even if you have that plugged in.

Will this protect against thunderstorm power surges and outages?
It should protect against surges, sometimes surges get past the best of these types of devices. The amount of time the unit will deliver power depends upon how many and what type of items are connected and drawing power.
