Quartet is a marvelous movie about retired musicians living in a senior community. The residents are preparing a musical show to help the finances of their community. There are great talents among these retirees and also rivalry and intrigues! Aging is part of the community, too. For someone who loves classical music, it is delightful. The famous quartet in the last act of Rigoletto (Verdi) comes together with reconciled great singers at the end of the spectacle. Maggie Smith, Michael Cambon and others are excellent in their roles and Dustin Hoffman is an accomplished director. I thoroughly enjoyed this DVD.
This movie is based on a true story, during World War 1. It happens in the trenches during Christmas of 1914. The commanders decided to have a truce to have the holiday together. This momentous event on the batterfield changed the lives of the soldiers from France, Germany and England. The troops from England were actually Scottish, with bagpipes. The actors are excellent and three languages are spoken. The singing is wonderful, too.
