The variable ND (neutral density) filter is especially useful for imparting movement to waterfalls. As it decreases amount of light reaching camera's sensor there is greater DOF (depth of field) so camera must be mounted to tripod to avoid camera shake.

Does this item filter the light in a circular or a linear fashion?
I know that of the two types, linear style UV filters are not recommended for cameras with auto-focusing lens'.
Neither. A UV filter primarily protects the front of the lens. A polarizing filter can be linear or circular though.

which lens for sony dslr A300
I have the Sony DSLR A300 camera, have loved it for the past year. Came with 18-70mm lens. Now my 3yr old daughter is "cheering", and I can't zoom close enough to see her from the stands. I have read for hours on what lenses would suit my needs, but I am more confused now than when I started!!!!! Can anyone help??
. Have subject stand in store at the appropriate distance and see which lens is needed to create the the size of image desired for your camera. A 70-200mm is a good choice but may need a more powerful telephoto for different applications.
