The whole package. In a smaller package.A beautiful display, powerful A5 chip, FaceTime HD camera, iSight camera with 1080p HD video recording, ultrafast wireless, and over 275,000 apps ready to download from the App Store. iPad mini is an iPad in every way, shape, and slightly smaller form.

I researched the tablet market before buying one. I was fixated on price so I bought the Nexus 7 32 gb instead of the Ipad Mini. While the Nexus 7 is a good tablet it's not Apple. I just had to have the Ipad Mini so I bought a 16 gb and was so happy that I exchanged it the next week for the 32 gb model and no regrets. I own a Ipod Touch 5th gen 32 and have never looked backed. Apple nailed it on the screen size on the Ipad Mini. Do yourself a favor get the Ipad Mini..... It just works.

Should i get this or wait for the newer model to come out?
I would wait to see what the newer model brings. Most times the newer model price is the only thing that goes up with minimal new features. If you stick with this model I would try to get 16 GB ram. Certain models lack ports. The Air is a beautiful machine but lacks ports. Also I would go with a refurbished model only directly from Apple save a ton there. Stick with the 256 Gb flash hard drive and just add a Nifty Mini drive in the SD slot with a 200 GB micro sd card and you're all set. But get the most ram you can afford because you can't add ram later.
