Tim Burton's Beetlejuice is one of Tim Burton's best films, featuring his unique sense of design and illustration throughout, highlighted by the performances of Michael Keaton in the title role, and a young Winona Ryder in one of her breakout roles. A very young Alec Baldwin and Gena Davis play the lovely couple who get killed by a freak accident and wind up stuck in the afterlife without a clue... and call upon the resources of Beetlejuice to help them out... which doesn't work out like they planned.

This comedy "perfect storm" hit at the right time, and helped to make Zach Galifianakis and Bradley Cooper stars. Raunchy, rowdy, good time comedy with crazy characters and situations galore.

Re-watching this film in the high resolution Blu Ray format was a revelation, like watching the film for the first time. This is by far my favorite Christopher Nolan film and holds up with multiple viewings... I see something new each time.

Sprawling and filled with call-backs to a million films that came before it, former video store clerk and renowned auteur Quentin Tarantino once again takes on the Western genre with his latest film, The Hateful Eight. A textbook "slow burn" film, TH8 unspools slowly revealing its colorful cast of characters and their apparent motivations. I say "apparent", because some folks in this movie are not what they appear, and finding the clues and reading the performances to discover who isn't who they claim to be is half the fun of this movie. I would say, in my own opinion, that this is a beautifully crafted film, probably one of Tarantino's most cinematically breathtaking productions to date, but it takes it's good sweet time to get things rolling, and for some folks, that may be asking too much. For Tarantino fans, and old school movie fans, this film is a must-see. Younger viewers, teens and twenty-somethings, not immersed in movie culture or versed in "old" movies (you know, the good stuff made before they were born) will find this film ultimately boring until it finally pays off with a burst of violence and mayhem in its latter minutes. As with most Tarantino films, it helps to speak "Tarantino" or at least to be fluent in what he's laying down.

Star Wars Episode VIII: The Force Awakens is JJ Abrams' love letter to the original Trilogy, and pretty much does what it intends: to rinse away the bad taste of George Lucas' well-meant-but-utterly-lifeless "Prequel" Trilogy, bringing us back to the world of the characters we all know and love, and introducing a trio of new young heroes to carry on the Saga. There's a lot of love for the franchise on display in this new Episode, and the special features do a good job of showing how much a work of love this film really is. Needless to say, if you're a Star Wars fan, this is necessary viewing, and a must-have in any video library!

Kylo Ren, would-be Sith Lord with a mission... and a lot of emotional baggage.

This was a snap to set up, and wound up finding over a dozen local digital signals. I got mine on sale, and had a Best Buy $5 certificate, so it was CHEAP and worth every penny to bring broadcast channels to my spare TV (without the cable hookup).
Matthew McConaughey continues the "McConaussaince" with Batman Trilogy Director Christopher Nolan's INTERSTELLAR. Full of drama and bits of humor, INTERSTELLAR harkens back to another era, when space travel was something we, as a people, longed to undertake. There's some great performances in this film, from McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, and Nolan favorite Michael Caine, to a special, uncredited guest-star in the last reel. Though the film's science and situations have come under some intense scrutiny and criticism, it holds true that no SF film is ever 100% accurate, and that a bit of license is always acceptable in the pursuit of storytelling.

Although I have thoroughly enjoyed Sylvester Stallone's EXPENDABLES film series, I thought the move away from an R-rated format to the PG-13 rating format to be a mistake. One would assume that these films are made to not only showcase the stars of past action film series, but some of today's hottest new action stars, but part of the appeal for fans is over-the-top action, violence, and yes, sometimes gore. Stallone himself has admitted in so many words that going for the safer PG-13 rating was a mistake, and that should an EXP4 be in the cards, he would return to the R rating. Regardless, THE EXPENDABLES 3 was an enjoyable action romp for me, especially with the addition of a meatier role for Schwarzenegger, and the introduction of Antonio Banderas' manic mercenary, "Galgo"... he made the movie for me. What's next Sly?!

Edgar Wright's SHAUN OF THE DEAD is the bar by which all Romantic Zombie Comedies must measure up (Fido and Warm Bodies, come to mind), and although it doesn't quite reach that SOTD level, it has some good laughs and memorable performances from a cast that includes comedy veterans John C. Reilly and Molly Shannon.

A step up from the first film, The Purge: Anarchy ramps up the action and takes the stifling and claustrophobic setting of the first film and throws it into the city streets on the night of the annual Purge. There's a lot more going on in this film, but many of the same social issues that dwelled beneath the surface of the first film are still relevant here. A worthy sequel.
